The unveiling of the original Xbox by Bill Gates and The Rock at the CES trade show is one of the most famous moments in the brand's history, and it took place exactly 21 years ago today on January 6th, 2001.

At the time, it seemed like such a bizarre crossover — Dwayne Johnson was still a WWF wrestler back in the early 2000s and had yet to become a movie star — but he and Gates bounced off each other brilliantly with a hilarious exchange.

In the recent Xbox "Power On" documentary, some former Xbox employees had the following to say about it:

"How do you unveil a product in a way that might surprise the world, and get the world to see Microsoft doing something differently?"

"It went well. We showed nothing, technically, but it started to build the excitement."

Even today, The Rock continues to partner with Xbox for various things. Back in 2020, he delivered custom Xbox Series X consoles to children's hospitals, and he's also recently been working with Microsoft to promote his film, Red Notice.

And earlier this afternoon, he took to Twitter to comment on that historic Xbox unveiling from 2001:

"Was a fun day at CES, introducing the world to the very first ever, “OG Xbox” with Bill. We were the coolest cats in Vegas, talking s**t about our broadband capabilities and fanny packs."
