Update: Rare has passed on the news to Xbox fans that its classic N64 title Banjo-Kazooie is out on the Switch tomorrow. Of course, Xbox fans can still play the title via Game Pass and Rare Replay.
Original article [Fri 24th Sep, 2021 03:30 BST]: Rare might have been purchased by Microsoft long ago, but somehow its partnerships with Nintendo continue.
In the latest deal, it seems Microsoft has given Nintendo the green light to release the original Banjo-Kazooie game on its newly announced Switch Online N64 "Expansion Pack" service.
This news was revealed during Nintendo's Direct broadcast earlier today. Of course, as noted by Rare - Xbox gamers can play the title via Game Pass and Rare Replay:
@RareLtd: You saw it right – our '90s classic Banjo-Kazooie is heading to Nintendo Switch! It’s a pleasure to be ushering the bear and bird onto Nintendo's latest console, offering another modern way (alongside @XboxGamePass and Rare Replay) to savour its many collectibles and googly eyes.
While many Nintendo fans are hopeful more classic Rare games will be released on the Switch Online service, this may simply be a case of the game complimenting the addition of Banjo-Kazooie as a DLC fighter in Smash Bros. Ultimate.

@SplooshDmg 100% this. Please, Phil, make it happen.
Now we know why Phil had that Switch on his shelf a few months ago.
I wonder if these was the 'big' news between Xbox and Nintendo that had been hyped up for towards the end of 2021?
Il probably get crucified for this but I never got the nintendo 64 and never played banjo but from the gameplay I've seen it's nothing special and can't see the big fuss about it, now I suppose if I played it back then maybe my opinion would change but if they was to remake it would there be a big interest in it from gamers who have never played or heard about it?
I just hope we get Diddy Kong Racing eventually on the Switch. Loved that game.
@Royalblues The only one that's actually uncertain is Goldeneye, since it's not up to Nintendo and Rare/Microsoft alone.
@ParsnipHero Arguably the best cart game in history.
@SplooshDmg yeah I think it's one of those where you need to of played it back then to really appreciate it, i recently played yooka laylee and enjoyed it so if a banjo remake is anywhere near that level then il be happy, I think platformers have kinda died out in terms of popularity the previous two gens (apart from mario) and not many big developers want to make one and the most recent one balan wonderland failed miserably.
CJ's Elephant Antics on the C64 is the best platformer ever and needs a re release, not a remake, in HD soon..
Banjo-Tooie is a great game, just too complicated without a guide. Banjo-Kazooie is just perfect 😁.
@JohannVanDerSmut Yep it has a great soundtrack and a perfect European classic story.
I mean, this is cool. But Xbox just keeps releasing games on other platforms. I'm frequently asked when criticizing Phil for being a straight dogged liar for examples. Here's yet another one: Not long after the Switch Ori port, he was asked about more ports coming to Switch... his response was they are done with porting games to other platforms, that these were just "pre-existing obligations" they had to fulfill. Not only immediately after that, he announced all Xbox Game Studios games getting a day and date release on Steam, but here we are with another of their games coming to Switch yet again.
It's more money for Xbox so I don't think they'll have a problem with this and I'm sure other games will follow.
@isturbo1984 Banjo Kazooie is not a port, they emulate the N64 on switch, so Nintendo just runs their 'own' code from the cartridge on the switch, with permission from Microsoft. PC is not that different from Xbox (custom version of windows), and they always said they would do Xbox and PC versions, just like Sony, now slowly but surely putting every game also on PC.
@isturbo1984 I don't think Steam counts as a "port" if it's already on PC it's just a different store for the same game.
Banjo isn't really a port here either just running the N64 game in emulation. Microsoft didn't have to do anything except sign a piece of paper and cash a cheque.
I was thinking about this masterpiece the other day (as I often do) and the spirit/humour and dialogue was a big part of the magic. I’m not sure it can be replicated today because attitudes have changed a lot. I think that’s what made Rare so special back in the late 90’s they really captured a special feeling in there games, the worlds they created were just so compelling!
@jrt87 ah is see, I've never really been into 2D gaming, started with playstation 1 and my first nintendo console was the gamecube towards the end of its life.
@TheSilverFalcon Oh. Sorry. Microsoft still owns it 100% though.
I think this is how Xbox is going to get Goldeneye. This deal with BK probably was a bargaining chip to get James Bond.
