Rumours have been swirling recently about the next Call of Duty game, which is set to return to the Modern Warfare series. As it turns out, we may be able to go hands on with it a little earlier than usual for CoD.
According to prominent leaker Tom Henderson, Modern Warfare II will be revealed this summer, and could launch in October 2022. The release date falls a little earlier than CoD's typical November slot, but the series has launched in October before.
Henderson claims that the earlier release is in part due to Call of Duty: Vanguard's "poor sales performance". However, given that Modern Warfare 2019 also launched in October, we're hesitant to believe that's the core reason. Still, it makes sense to get the game out as early as possible if Vanguard isn't as popular as Activision had hoped.
According to the same leaker, a big Warzone update is also set to arrive soon after launch. We hope that this means Warzone will finally move to a native next-gen app, especially given the game's poor performance on Xbox Series S.

Ah lovely. So we've got Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Modern Warfare, and now Modern Warfare 2.
Well if the put a very good 12 hour single player campaign in the dam game they might get me back after many absent years.
Sooo.....vanguard DOESN'T sell well, so they're going to RUSH out the next one. Sounds reasonable and logical. Oh activision, you old rascal.
Vanguard is one of the highest selling games of 2021… and that’s not good enough? Truthfully, Vanguard was one of the most MOR CoDs of all time, so I’m not surprised it sold under expectation. I don’t foresee CoD continuing to improve its sales, however, because I feel a lot of people will continue to drop off these yearly lukewarm installments to stay instead with the free gameplay of Warzone.
We've already got a modern warfare 2, this is just ridiculous
This is what happens when corporate suits run video games companies. It’s not about the passion or delivering for the fanbase, it’s all about churning out games to generate money.
Personally, I’d spread the releases, produce better quality games but fewer of them and try to focus the fanbase on to a select number of titles and keep those titles alive for longer.
I guess that’s not good for business though…
I think the most likely reason for the earlier release of Call of Duty will be to avoid any sales competition; namely, Starfield.
If people buy just one big game a month (and most probably don't), they don't want to be the also-ran of November. Get in early, and hopefully bag some sales before Starfield releases and posts absolutely huge sales numbers...
@PhileasFragg Actually it's Modern Warfare II not Modern Warfare 2.
I am an avid COD player and the majority of players I know consider the most recent Modern Warfare as the best game in the series (before it’s launch I considered the original MW the best).
I'll be skipping it like I did with cold war & vanguard after I bought modern warfare & got ripped off never again
Bring on the Goldeneye Xbox release!
