Requires Twitter. Twitter sucks. Not worth it.
@Hexamex-Tex well said, not worth it
@Hexamex-Tex I have a twitter account and only use it to follow gaming stuff. Don't have to deal with the hassle of the rest of twitter that way.
Nice that the Series S is finally getting some love but that is not for me.
On one hand I have vowed never to sign up for any of the major social media platforms for any reason, ever, no exceptions.
On the other hand I need this more than air and water.
@NEStalgia Xbox Live an exception? 😂
@themightyant LOL, I tend to forget there even are social features in this stuff....I've never used them!
Plus MS is wholly incompetent at using and abusing customer data like Faceazonbookle does
Haha. Ball bustin’ a little bit due to your language “no exceptions, ever” 😂
But people forget that Xbox live, PSN etc. on top of allowing them to game also allow MS/Sony to harvest all their data and share user created content publicly, or to small private groups.
I’d argue that MS are in many ways MORE competent than FB at using our data. For starters no one questions having to have an Xbox live account just to play games. Can the same be said for Oculus?
Additionally Xbox seem pretty good at getting us to click tiles and ads on their network to sign up for their services (Game Pass) and items on their store (Games) without us ever calling foul.
Lastly the Xbox social platform is still growing in users, unlike FB which is in decline.
“Xbox Live. The social media network that doesn’t feel like a social media network” Mission accomplished.😁
@themightyant suddenly I feel like becoming a physical-only pony.....
That being said, we know these companies also do sell data because of course they do. But how much data they have, what kind of data it is, and who they sell it to are naturally different. Social let's then track everything you read, everywhere you go, what you buy... Everything. The gaming networks tell them who you game with, but doesn't tell them anything about the relationship between people and the people those people know, etc. Not en
The whole real world piece of what you read, where your go, etc. All Sony,ms, and Nintendo know is I spend way too much money and time on video games... My social credit score must be awful
Eric Schmidt had that creepy quote about knowing more about you than you do, knowing what you want and more or less what you're thinking. To a degree gaming networks could do that and even know how you think by how you play. That's dangerous. But they also lack real world information on anyone. Ms maybe it's the most worrying since they have our work life data mixed with the fact we play games with no follow through and get easily bored
I do think there's a natural difference and threat level from a company that HAS data but it's motivated to get you to buy more of their product versus a company like socials where you ARE the product being sold first and foremost.
Then again this is the Microsoft caught sharing user data with the NSA, which is a big part of what tanked the kinektbone... .......... .......
@NEStalgia agreed there’s definitely a difference especially between companes who’s main purpose is using our data (Facebook, Google) for their gain and others that are mostly selling products (Microsoft, Apple). I was mostly being cynical.
But I imagine Microsoft have far more data that you suspect. Ever looked at their website or Xbox store in a web browser? Clicked the allowed cookies bar? Or pre GDPR just visited their site unaware. Then all the other trackers and data sources are likely linked and they have far more info on you that your game time and game spending habits. Not to mention Kinect! Scary stuff yet..
“Alexa lights off” wait what?
I wonder if it works on Mondays...
@themightyant Well, I'm paranoid, so I only use Edge in Private mode exclusively for games and logging into YouTube for gaming content and keep it separate from other browsers used locked down for other things, and set cookies to flush when the browser closes.....I might not be the best example
But yeah, it's terrifying the info even they have even with such limited use. And who knows from a business perspective what's linked. Different scary from the socials, still, but scary enough.
And I've found it curious they actually made their assistant Cortana. The"real" Cortana, voice and all.... I mean, she went rampant and tried to exterminate all life in the universe. And that's the AI profile they picked for their home invasion assistant..... Clearly another example of 343 not communicating well with headquarters...
You use Edge… by Microsoft… then they definitely have more on you than your gaming habits (paranoia intensifies) lol
Private mode only does so much. It only blocks certain types of tracking, far from all. If you want to stay off grid you need VPN, different browser, blocking tools and more. But it gimps the Internet. Many sites stop working.
If memory serves Cortana, the voice assistant, was introduced after Halo 4 when she was the hero and apparently sacrificed herself to save chief it was a year or two later that Halo 5 released and she went rampant and effectively became the villain. Agreed left hand not communicating with the right at MS on this… perhaps that means are data is safer after all 😂
