SEGA has treated us to a fresh look at the highly-anticipated upcoming Sonic game, now known as Sonic Frontiers. The trailer is unfortunately just cinematic footage, but it does give us a release window — Holiday 2022.
Here's what SEGA has to say about the game in the official description:
An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high velocity, open-zone freedom. Battle powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands - landscapes brimming with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts and more!

Open world Sonic. You mean like Boom?
Looking forward to add'l gameplay content
Q) Eagerly anticipating Sonic Frontiers?
A) Not particularly, what with my disinterest in these more open types of experiences typically and so far a lack of a cast showcased aside from Sonic (I actually like Sonic's large cast of characters). That said, the Legend of Zelda crossover with Sonic in Sonic Lost World was actually very enjoyable and gave a glimpse of how a open world style of Sonic could work out quite well.
Perhaps I will keep an eye out... maybe it will later show off more playable characters and evoke that Adventure era I enjoyed so much. Still, it's late into 2022 and so far, the year is already looking pretty busy for me for game releases.
Sonic Infinite
I really hope that Sega are able to not ruin the new Sonic game with a horrible camera or dodgy controls. The potential is huge since Sonic the Hedgehog is a series that has been focused on nature, animals and islands since the beginning. I think making it cross-gen is a mistake, the scope is huge and the project is ambitious. Yes, I'm excited but, sadly, also ready for some degree of disappointment.
@Kilamanjaro The trailer looks like Halo Infinite, indeed 😂.
I'll wait to play it before judging. Most sonic games are great fun. Sonic adventure was terrible though, apart from that first level with the whale. Probably the biggest hype ever when it was released on Dreamcast, u bought a Dreamcast because of the trailer. How disappointed I was. Metropolis street racer kept me happy for a year or so though. I'd like a sequel to that
@DonkeyKongBigBoy Sonic Generations is great and now it's 60fps on Series X/S 😊.
Yeah I saw the digital foundry review. Mulling over whether to spend the £15 on it though. And also mulling a purchase of sonic unleashed too
@BlueOcean fingers crossed it's good!
@DonkeyKongBigBoy Sonic Generations is definitely worth it!
@Kilamanjaro Hopefully!
@DonkeyKongBigBoy I was mulling it over for a while but I picked it up in the end and it's one of the best games I've played on my Series S so far and that was before the FPS boost. Its without a doubt the best 3D Sonic in my opinion and probably tied favourite of the series alongside Mania for me.
@WillQuan It's my favourite Sonic 3D game, too! Sonic Generations is fantastic, especially on Series S/X. The more I played it the more I liked it. I got all the achievements except the online ones that are no longer available. It's full of content, great level design and lots of interesting short levels/missions.
