We've been waiting for it for a long time, but The Gunk is now finally available on Xbox Game Pass! To coincide with the release, the first reviews have also been dropping across the web over the past hour.
The game is developed by SteamWorld developer Image & Form, and sees you attempting to battle the curse of a toxic gunk parasite, using your trusty Power Glove to reverse the corruption, uncover secrets of old and heal the planet.
So, what are critics saying about the game so far? Here are some of the reviews we've found:
Windows Central (4.5/5)
"The Gunk is a satisfying puzzle-adventure game where two down-on-their-luck space scrappers must help save an alien planet from a destructive black goo. The combat in The Gunk does feel frustratingly underbaked, but solid story pacing and excellent puzzle challenges help overshadow the struggle."
Eurogamer (4/5 - Recommended)
"I started The Gunk worrying about how one of the great 2D design teams would cope with three dimensions. The truth is they cope so effortlessly that I just spent the next four or five hours gloriously lost in what they had built."
IGN (7/10)
"The Gunk is a fun little platforming adventure full of malicious messes that are plenty satisfying to clean up. The small twists each new area puts on its fairly simple mechanics never drastically shake up its formula of vacuuming the landscape and then hopping to the next location, but an enticing story and a beautiful sense of style keep the clean-up process consistently entertaining throughout its relatively brief campaign."
GameReactor (7/10)
"It's an adventure that doesn't quite live up to its own potential due to some questionable choices. But despite the fact that the pace is sometimes a little too slow, which is enhanced by the melancholy music as well as some minor technical shortcomings, I can still recommend you to download this."
Game Informer (7/10)
"The Gunk deserves a fair bit of criticism and only a little unreserved praise. The connection between the characters holds up the story, sucking up goo is strangely satisfying, and the mechanics work as intended. However, I wish the world felt more distinctive and better realized. The environment has the potential to be a vibrant kaleidoscope with brilliant hues and unearthly forms. Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite hit that mark. All said, The Gunk is a competent romp through space, but not a stellar one."
Destructoid (6/10)
"There is nothing fundamentally wrong with The Gunk. It works from a technical standpoint and it isn’t the worst way you can spend about five hours of your time. But I just can’t muster up any sort of authentic excitement about it. If it were funnier or cleverer or more challenging, I could maybe start to see it as a title I could recommend."
GamesRadar (3/5)
"Rani and Becks are an appealing duo to share adventures with, but they deserve something more exciting than The Gunk has to offer."
The average seems to be sitting somewhere around the 7/10 mark, then (Metacritic has yet to establish an aggregate rating at the time of writing), with a mixture of praise and criticism doing the rounds. Give it a try for yourself and let us know how you feel about it!

I can't wait to play this. I have been hyped for it since initial announcement. I love the art style and it just looked like something that I would enjoy.
Plus...Image & Form has done an amazing job transitioning to 3D! I love it when a developer branches out.
It's an indie game right? It looks fun. Can't wait to finish plague tale so I can try it
"It works from a technical standpoint and it isn’t the worst way you can spend about five hours of your time."
It's only five hours long? Didn't think it'd be that short by the looks of it. I might give it a go sooner rather than later then!
@LtSarge My favourite quote is from Eurogamer, who really liked it.
"Once you're through with the fun, interesting, clever stuff, the game is over. The Gunk is a treat."
A game that doesn't outstay it's welcome and is interesting till the end is a rarity in 2021. Definitely a huge PLUS in my book.
So apparently its quite a short game, which isn't entirely a bad thing with how many other great games I need to play on gamepass.
Scores are pretty good though, will play tonight for a few hours, don't want to finish it in one sitting
I like that it's a shorter game. I don't need to spend 10-15 hours of my life doing padding so they can claim it's a 15-20 hours long game. Hopefully all those calling PS games DLC when they are 10 hours long remain consistent
@Bdbrady you think 15-20 hours is bad, try playing JRPG's that take 80+ 😂
To be fair this is a game about sucking up goo, I have to assume there is a hard limit on just how long that can stay fun. I'm prepared to spend a nice 5 hours or so on this.
@UltimateOtaku91 Indeed.
Dragon Quest XI, a game I adore, can burn in silicone hell for making me think I was nearly done 40 hours in, then 30 hours later offering me credits only to reveal even more game.
I've been playing this for about an hour and I'm really enjoying this. Very chilled out game.
Look forward to play it a bit tonight, but won’t have much time till the weekend.
I love games with fluid/liquid mechanic stuff, to this day Mario Sunshine is my favorite Mario game, so I’m very pumped up (no pun intended.) Its a very nice birthday present from Microsoft to just toss this into GamePass today. 🙂
@themightyant Yep, definitely excited to give this a go soon!
@UltimateOtaku91 AC Valhalla and Persona 5 . . . two amazing games, but they took some time.
@abe_hikura How much more is there after Snflheim? I kind of stopped there because I didn't want it to end.....it sounds like maybe there's a lot more after that?!
Wait! This is a short game?
That means I’m gonna actually finish it and not have it half finished in my backlog like all the others that just sit there for years as a constant reminder of my failure to complete games, eating away at my soul and stealing my happiness in the process?
No fair!
@NEStalgia I really don't want to get into spoilers but there's more. Then when you get to what feels like the end, theres more after that
@abe_hikura I loved. DQ11, and yea I was shocked when the credits rolled and I was… but this and that thing were never resolved… and then the game continues after the credit rolls… for what felt like 60 more hours!
Mind you, it was an epic second part!
Been waiting for this one, went into it with a open mind and to be honest I enjoyed the gentle feel of the game, beautiful to look at & easy to play & so far I'm enjoying the story ..
Scores are surprisingly low. Really fun game so far.
@Tharsman @abe_hikura WOW, that's amazing, I stopped thinking I was close to the end at the end of the Sniflheim Library (never even confronted the villain after it, just saved and quit) because I didn't really want the whole saga to end. Is the "more" "main game" or is the more "post-game end-game super challenge" type stuff? (I.E. Fantasy Life had "more" but it was post-game and they were such insane difficulty dungeons it was really debatable I'd consider it content)
@NEStalgia its main game. The first credit roll is just a tease.
There is a small amount of end-game super boss content after the second credit roll.
@NEStalgia Again want to avoid spoilers but the game has 3 acts, the first is the largest, that's the bit your in. The last act is both more story and some separate super challenge stuff (some of which is just there for the sake of it, so can be skipped)
@abe_hikura @Tharsman Thanks! That's good to know! I really have to revistit that gain, then. So much backlog.....
Just finished halo so I could start this. Really easy and comforting game. Visuals have a great style to them and I like just going around a new planet and finding out about it and rehabbing the world and getting upgrades. Very simple, perfect for children and if you like this game play loop.
Maybe do an article on the Xbox reviews of this game. Very very disheartening.
I loved the playthrough of the frist two chapters last night. It has this beautiful, compact world with just enough sense of exploration - filled with nice interaction between the two main characters and lovely laidback action that controls great.
I finished it today at 7 ours with 82% achievements. To be honest I really liked it, the game has very good mechanics, very well crafted levels and puzzles with nice UE4 graphics. The characters on the other hand aren't instresting at all and it had some huge frame drops at the final boss fight. It's on gamepass give it a try it's horth it.
meh... its a nice calm game to expect nothing from.
But if you have any big expectations...leave them at the door.... not much to this game...and thank goodness that it's on gamepass
Just beat it today. My partner was watching the entire time. Very reminiscent of old school platformers. Had a few bugs but everything is very casual until the end. I loved the music and thought the story was enough. Perfect game pass game. Probably 6-8 hours. And I got most of the achievements.
