It's been a long time coming, but PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is finally going free-to-play across all platforms on January 12th, 2022. The news was announced as part of The Game Awards 2021.

five years too late. genre is beyond saturated now and another one just got announced.
its in literally everything, why play pubg now when everything else does it better.
