Xbox director of project management Jason Ronald appeared on the Iron Lords Podcast this past weekend, and had some interesting comments to share in regards to calls for a 'platinum trophy' system for achievements.
The host questioned Ronald about whether Xbox could get "a Sony platinum achievement equivalent, so that when you finish a whole game, there is some type of credit or recognition of that," and here's what he had to say in response:
"We've definitely heard that feedback. Achievements are an interesting one because everybody plays games differently. So we really think about, how do we reward people for playing the way that you want to, and the games that you want to?"
"There's some players who just prefer to play multiplayer. What are we doing to reward them and show progression and things like that? There's other people who like to play tons of different games, so how do we go ahead and respect that investment? And then there's other people like myself where I'm a completionist and I literally want to complete everything within a game."
"So, it's a balance and it's definitely an area that we've heard some feedback on. Nothing to announce today, but definitely top of mind for us as we look to the road ahead."
As you may well be aware, platinum trophies are gifted to players who are able to complete 100% of a game on PlayStation platforms, and essentially serve as a badge of honour. It'd be great to see Xbox implement something similar in the future, and hopefully it wouldn't be too difficult to add - at least not for newer titles.
Ronald also highlighted that the team is working on Game DVR "capture and share" improvements as a priority right now, admitting that they wanted to make more progress on this in 2021, but it ended up having to be pushed to 2022.

Having both systems and for years I always prefer the Sony trophy system, simple and easy and more engaging in chat about platinum trophies etc.
As someone who likes to complete games, i would like to see a platinum style trophy system added. But if they implement such a thing, it would need to award them for previously completed games imo
I never bother with achievements. Just playing the game to have fun.
Why? Didn't PlayStation add trophies because Xbox had achievement?
I have both consoles and tbh I’ve never been a trophy/achievement hunter, needless to say I’m not bothered 🤷🏻♂️
I think Microsoft Rewards is enough and the only real reason I chase achievements. It's nice checking them out and going for a few but I just don't see how getting a digital trophy really means anything. There are already achievement hunters on Xbox. If it helps ease the pain of PlayStation fanatics crossing over into Xbox then I guess I really don't care either way. Just seems a bit pointless to want a digital trophy but maybe they can make them into NFT's and you can visit your VR Salvation Army and collect other people platinum trophies in 10 years for 10 cents.
I like the Platinum trophies as a badge for completing a game. But I much prefer Xbox Rewards, who actually give us money
I wonder why we don't see Playstation fans asking for anything similar to that on their platform.
There are pros and cons to each system. Generally I prefer Gamerscore and I always know where my Gamerscore is (currently about 215,000) whereas my PS rank is more nebulous and unknown (perhaps 415+).
However it is nice to get a platinum trophy for completing the main game and I DO think Xbox could benefit from ALSO have a separate icon for games you have 1000/1000 in the main game. This is especailly useful when you don't have DLC and 1000/1750 with a platinum equivalent is helpful.
I see no problem with them having a separate completed games number/achievement.
@Microbius Same here, man. I know some people lose their minds over trophies/ achievements, but honestly I only play games to decompress and relax. A to-do list isn't exactly my idea of fun. But, whatever makes people happy, right?
Doesnt have to be sony's system, but something should be given to those who 100% a game.
Thing is, PlayStation added Trophies because Achievements were seen as a successful incentive to have players do things in games (or even buying games!) they otherwise might not. Now, sometimes, those Achievements can be a right pain, other times they have you play differently and perhaps enjoy doing so, and also visit places/undertake activities that you might not otherwise do, and so on.
So with PlayStation having taken the idea of Achievements and (in my opinion) having improved upon the formula, why not add a 'Completionist Achievement'? I feel it's a better system than the overall gamer score that we currently have as to some extent, that has become more meaningless as time moves on. To be clear, I'd keep that too, but I'd add this extra achievement as well. Truthfully, it won't affect that many people in reality. Those that already rinse a game for every achievement anyway, will continue to do so, and will have something extra to show off. Those that don't bother with achievements right now, won't bother with the new one. Those, like myself, who never play the multiplayer component of a game, only focusing on the single-player campaign component, will either have to start playing multiplayer (assuming they really want this Achievement) or simply shrug their shoulders and move on to the next game (which is what I would do).
Ultimately, such an Achievement will only impact on those that actually care about such things, and so it is absolutely no skin off the noses of anyone that doesn't really care about achievements...
I think that if Xbox got the correspondence of a Platinum trophy, then it would be the perfect achievement system. I vastly prefer achievements over trophies because it's actually a numbered system. Trophies aren't assigned any value, you only care about how many you have and the only ones people care about are Platinum trophies. Sure there's a level system but it's just not as impressive as saying that you have 100,000 G for example.
So to have a Platinum trophy equivalent on Xbox would make the system even more appealing. Because like I said, since trophies don't have any value, you need to get all of them in a game in order to get the Platinum trophy that's actually the thing people care about. But I could get 930/1000 G in an Xbox game and that would still be impressive because it adds to a total count. To then have an Xbox Platinum would honestly give me more incentive to try and collect all achievements because right now, it doesn't matter if I get 900 or 1000 as all of that will still get added to my total gamerscore.
I prefer the points of Xbox achievements over PlayStation's trophies but I wouldn't mind having something if you get to 1000 GS....not that I do very often
I prefer Gamerscore to Trophies because of the variance in value of the achievements. Trophies only offer 3 tiers plus a game completion award. Achievements on the other hand can (assuming a reasonable 5gs increment and achievements going up to 200gs for one achievement) vary by like 40 tiers. So you could do something very easy and something very hard and be rewarded the same bronze trophy, but on xbox, you'd see a difference in what you were rewarded.
That, and having every game worth 1000gs by default, rather than a random number of trophies, gives each game's award system equal value.
The only problem with the achievement system is that when you get to like 200k above like I have, the numbers just kinda blur in to each other.
And I liked the 360 dash that showed you how many games you had 100%'d.
Literally, the achievement system would be perfect with an extra platinum trophy like reward.
The Gamerscore system is better than the weird level based thing they have on PlayStation.
just add an achievement if you get 1000G
Unless there is some considerations being made about what achievements are, no.
I got almost every achievement for Judgement, but the last 3 I couldn't unlock because they was like dominos (make all the Friends, do mission that unlocks for having all friends, complete all missions) but to knock that first domino over I had to find 50 QR codes hidden around the city, only findable with the drone. Those codes unlock drone parts for the racing side mission THAT I HAD ALREADY FINISHED.
Sorry but no, I loved the game but I'm not doing that.
I'd rather just have something like an icon next to the title if I have the 100% achievement completion for the base game. It doesn't have to be an additional achievement like the platinum is, most multiplatform games already have a "platinum" trophy achievement. I think the DLC achievements should be grouped like they are on the Playstation and don't get counted against the 100% for the game.
@SplooshDmg I'm genuinely sorry to read about your personal experience with trophies and the such. Have you tried to change your mindset about games as a whole? For instance, I see them as entertainment products, no more, no less - the moment I stop having fun, I simply quit. That usually happens when the credits roll: then I convince myself that I had my fill and I jump over to another game that may or may not be worth my time. What I'm trying to say is: your time and you as a person are infinitely more valuable than any game (or anything). Don't ever forget that, friend!
I’m a big achievement hunter. Love the gamerscore system, but some kind of badge for 100% would be nice.
How to get a platinum trophy -
1. Play game
2. Beat game
3. Continue playing game doing the boring stuff that wouldn't do without some added incentive
I hate platinum trophies. Yes sometimes it feels cool, but it just makes the games that are near impossible for me to 100% all that more punishing.
When I collect trophies on a PS I feel I care more shout the platinum than anything else, on Xbox I feel I care more about getting as close as possible to 100%, but not achieving it does not feel as bad.
I rather MS just comes up with something more original.
I'd rather them expand diamond achievements so that those of us that earned them before everyone else didn't lose the diamond status.
In all the games I have owned that have Trophy/Achievements, I think I have completed 'ALL' in about 6-8 games (more DLC complete than main games too). Considering that's over 15yrs on Xbox and around 13yrs on Playstation. I have always owned both and still have my 360, PS3, XB1 and PS4 consoles and games as well as both a Series X and PS5.
There are a 'few' games where I am a few trophies/achievements away from 'completion' but I'm not going back to collecting all the feathers in AC, speed running through games to beat them under a certain time etc - things that are 'not' fun, enjoyable or something I want to waste my time attempting just for a trophy/bragging rights.
I don't let achievements dictate to me when a game is 'finished' - its 'finished' when I stop enjoying it and if that's after the first level, after beating the story or completed every challenge/achievement criteria. I am NOT going to spend time chasing after trophies if the experience isn't fun. I am not going to reach 'max' level in a frustrating or boring MP just for a trophy or trying to do some ridiculous 'challenge' (like beat a time - looking at Titanfall 2 Gauntlet runs - the only trophies/achievements I didn't get on both PS4 & XB1 versions).
I know everyone is different and whether Xbox add an equivalent to the Platinum trophy or not really doesn't matter to me either way. I will still only go for achievements that I want to for 'my' enjoyment. I know that sometimes, having a Platinum trophy can be a source of 'ire' from some people and even use these as reasons not to buy game. Not buying the game because some Trophies are 'hard' (beat the game on Insane difficulty without dying once and within a ridiculous time) or 'tedious' (play 50hours) which would affect their 'completion' percentage - each to their own...
As I said, it won't affect me either way - as it doesn't affect me at all going between Playstation and Xbox. Therefore I couldn't care less either way as I doubt 'many' games will entice me to go for ALL achievements and I don't need trophies/achievements to tell me when a game is 'Finished'!!
I would rather just keep the achievement system the way it is, I have always preferred it over the Sony trophy system. If I preferred Sony's stuff I would be using their stuff.
Personally I only want achievement points for my MS Rewards when I need them. Otherwise, they could be turned off as I'm more bothered when they pop up while playing then anything.
I like it the way it is. Totally my fault of course, but I've actually ruined games for myself going for the platinum trophy when the requirements were such a pain. I did it with Fallout 4, swore off trophies for a while, then did it again with AC Valhalla. If I'd played those games without going for the platinum I'd have done the things I wanted, left it at that and had a much better time with the games. Since I've had the Xbox and there is no platinum I've not looked at achievements, and enjoyed myself more as a result.
Why?
This goes back to the comment I made last week.
Achievements (and if they introduce trophies) essentially provide absolutely nothing. All of them are honestly nothing but "ohhhh you were such a good boy at the dentist today" sticker.
If you need to be rewarded to play a freaking video game. We definitely need to have a discussion about work ethic.
Personally I like the different feel between trophies and achievements. Trophies feel more like a cabinet where you can display your greatest feats, whereas my favourite part of achievements would be the monthly leaderboards, a bit of friendly competition like that is can be very fun especially with game pass.
@SplooshDmg I see, friend. Things are indeed way more complex than I initially thought. And I won't pretend I understand your struggle, man. Now more than ever I do hope these "surprise mechanics" go to hell and all the platinum trophy thing as well, because I had no idea how deeply they could affect players. I really wish you the best. Keep fighting the good fight!
Having gamed on both systems, PlayStation literally took the Xbox Achievement idea and improved it in my opinion.
I like the idea of Platinum Trophies for 100% competition, even though I don't personally hunt them myself due to limited free time.
It's just a case of how do they implement it in a way that isn't just a complete rip off, even though Xbox actually did achievements first. LOL
@SplooshDmg I'm with you on this one. As far as the achievement system goes Sony's is far better but I got too addicted to the platinum hunt too. I made the decision this year to stop hunting for trophies which has made me play more games, play the games properly and how they were intended and also play on all my platforms rather than targeting my PS5 for games I wanted to 100%. I'm getting a lot more out of all my systems and I'm enjoying playing games a hell of a lot more now having stopped trophy hunting.
I am pleased to say I am not one of the folk that buy games for an easy platinum though. Some games are made for this reason alone which sucks.
I'm an achievement hunter myself and there is only 2 things I would like to see.
Separate base games from DLC, so many games in the past I would 100% and then move on only for DLC to be released and strip me of my 100%.
Second would be a list of all the games I have completed. I don't want/need an extra achievement just a nice list. I think the original 360 dash had this.
Honestly. All I want is separate lists for offline, online and dlc achievements in games.
A time counter for how long I've played the game.
An option to hide games from my achievementlist even if I have unlocked some achievements in them.
I want them to find a way to list the DLC separate from the actual game like they do on PlayStation. While I prefer the gamerscore to the confusing trophy values, trophies are presented a lot cleaner than achievements are on Xbox. Honestly, I think that's more important than an equivalent to a platinum even though I wouldn't mind that either.
I tweeted Eden Marie about this a short time ago.
We already had this feature on the Xbox 360! They just need to bring it back for Xbox One games onwards, I would imagine that it would be pretty simple to scrape the data.
To be clear the 360 displays a number of games completed in your profile, with a list of them too.
If you have a 360 go and have a look, it's baffling that this feature wasn't continued.
So if they just implement that (just the initial cheevo list for a game, not including DLC) then that would be great.
This system is actually superior to the PS platinum system too as not all PS games include a Platinum trophy. 360's system was a true count of games with all initial cheevos unlocked. It just needs to be a medal or trophy with a number on it, done.
Maybe when you unlock the final cheevo in a game or could trigger a different graphic and sound effect too, kinda like the rare diamond notification.
This is something I've wanted from the start. I've always said that Trophies on PlayStation are better than Achievements single handedly because of the Platinum Trophy. I hope this happens.
I'll never understand achievements and trophies. I'm the most OCD person I know, and even my OCD doesn't compel me to come even close to engaging in that. Never liked them on XB and hated it when PS cloned it.
The only "Platinum" I ever did was Astrobot, and I did it only because the game is far too short and far too charming to put down when its down, and there's very little to seek in the way of achievements. And even then, doing it was miserable and required an internet guide to find the "hidden trophies" for doing incredibly stupid things just to check a box. "bounce the beach ball 5 times" WHY? That's not playing the game, it's doing dumb stuff because the check list tells you you have to. I know some people like it, but I truly just don't understand, and never will. Not even as an OCD nutjob.
@uptownsoul only available for people in the US unfortunately
@Microbius That's because your a casual 😁
I agree with others that Microsoft Rewards is more of a priority, I am still upset that family sharing of points has now not been working for over 6 months, I have seen a email from rewards support confirming this was closed permanently. We were notified that this would only be temporary on the Rewards page so I feel cheated! I wish I had taken a screenshot when it appeared so I could slap Microsoft back with it and say "humm. It says tempory here!" if anyone has taken a screenshot of the notification when it was up please get it touch with me. Thank you all.
@LtSarge Now for me personally I actually don't like achievements as much BECAUSE it's numbers, I just don't find numbers as appealing. I like Trophies more because your actually earning Trophies rather than numbers. I just think Trophies are more in depth, especially the Platinum Trophy too.
@SplooshDmg I shamefully enjoy the Attaboy award every time you get the popup and sound effect for doing a thing. SHOOODINGGG! You just watched the intro cutscene. YES! I. AM. LEGEND!!
I love how I got like 10 diamond rare achievements with big dramatic sounds of awesomeness for playing Psychonauts 2 doing asolutely nothing but playing the game in a linear fashion.
But seriously the "achievements' are either not "achievements", or are superfluous postgame fluff that can only be entertaining if it's your favoritest game ever or you literally don't have any other games (which shouldn't even apply in the post-gamepass world or anyone over the age of 15) And even my favoritest games, I'd much rather just play the campaign again and explore more crevices to see what things I missed the first time than "fight the fifth boss using only the dental floss without getting hit." It's just so pointless.
What really amazes me though is how many internet people seem to LIVE for this. Buy games for it. Obsess over these neurotic, inorganic checklists as passion. I mean I thought I was a fuffed up nutcase with an obsession over things. I can't imagine people are worse than me. It's actually pretty disturbing just how disturbed so much of the internet is. If you're worse than me, you need some serious meds and a padded cell.
@SplooshDmg I see where your coming from. I never thought if it like that to be honest. I think I know that achievements/trophies are useless in general and I have just gravitated to the ones that are aesthetically pleasing hence the PS trophy system. The Xbox one is definitely a more balanced system with points achieving an overall score which is the better way to do it. But when it came to trophies the popping sound with the trophy in the corner was where it was at for me.
I look at my trophies now though and think about all the time I wasted trying to get 100% rather than playing more games. Since dropping the chase I've experienced so many different games. I even completed Chronotrigger on DS recently. Of course those who continue to chase trophies and achievements if that's their thing then that's great. I feel like stopping has unleashed me and allowed me to enjoy more games 😃.
@Snake_V5 But nobody cares how many bronze, silver or gold trophies you have, only how many Platinums. In a sense, it kinda makes trophy hunting less appealing to beginners as they really have to do everything the game asks you to do, while there's much more flexibility with achievement hunting. You can play a game and get 200 G, quit it, play something else and get 800 G, and you will still have the same total amount as if you had gotten all 1000 G in the first game. Achievement hunting is just much more accessible than trophy hunting.
@uptownsoul yeah definitely & I get emails from Sony saying I've qualified for a playstation credit card when I live in the UK & you need to live in the US to get one not that I would want one anyway
You've got ultra rare achievements already, how about a 100 percent achievement with its own special chime. Its part of the wonder of unlocking a plat
@LtSarge Yeah but because of the Platinum Trophy it makes you strive to earn all other trophies In order to get it, more incentive.
If say you was 3 trophies or 3 achievements away for example, on PlayStation you're more than likely to strive for it knowing that if you earn those last 3 trophies, you'll get the Platinum. On Xbox in the same situation, screw it I'll move on, and that's because there's no Platinum equivalent or getting anything for it on Xbox.
To me saying I've got 500 Platinum looks and sounds better than saying I've got 500,000 gamerscore. That 500,000 gamerscore could literally come just from beating the main game with every game just once and not even from doing all there was to do.
@SplooshDmg I'm not certified as a nut. Certifications involve diagnoses and I don't do diagnoses. I know that's when they try to implant the mind waves. I won't let them near me.
@Snake_V5 That's why I said that if Microsoft added a Platinum equivalent on Xbox then it would have the perfect achievement system for the same reason you just stated.
@SplooshDmg How do you know, "corporations are incorporating so many psychologists into game development and how to develop systems to get gamers hooked"? What gave you that idea.
@SplooshDmg 🤣 100% I never gave a damn about any trophy but my plats. The others were just in my way...
But some people will like that trophies and achievements give then a sense of direction. As humans we seem to be very fond of the old tick in the box. It's that sense of satisfaction that we did something and it's off the list so to speak.
Some games do keep the overall platinum in line with the objectives of the game which is the way I liked it. I platinumed FF7 (original) and it was the normal things I would do in a final fantasy game anyway. I like to beat all the bosses in all my games so it worked quite well. I did FFX though too and that one sucked big time because you had to do all the stupid mini games which nearly killed me (RNG is not my friend in any game).
@Dezzy70 Same! In fact I bought Death's Door on Xbox and since it was announced for PS5 I stopped playing so I could go for the Plat on PS5. It's just a better system overall
Hopefully they've been reading my snarky comments on this website. If that's the case I'll say again, Capped at 1000, separate entry for dlc achievements, make all achievement information visible from the Guide, no more bland screenshots- we all loved unique achievement art. And of course, the Platinum. (Medal)
I’ve had both and I definitely prefer the gamer score. It’s simple to look at and get a sense of achievement without digging through a menu.
I love achievements and have done since I unlocked the first one in PD0 in Jan 2006. Adding a Platinum for the 1000gs isn’t the worst idea but I definitely prefer how achievements work now to Trophies. But they are different systems. For instance with Spiderman on PS4 I just got the Platinum and left it, but had it been on Xbox I might have got the DLC too to continue going.
Xbox Rewards are awesome too. So many £5/£10 giftcards just from playing games.
One thing I like most about achievements is the timestamps. The fact that I can see what I have accomplished gaming-wise since 2006 is crazy. I would love to have been able to see exactly what date and time I completed Super Mario 64 on N64 for instance, or whatever. So I do think they add a lot to the experience.
And as has been mentioned, sometimes they just help you go through and tidy up a game. @SplooshDmg mentioned games like DQXI and Psychonauts 2. Those are two that I got 1000gs this year because yea it’s a logical route through the game, I agree.
Of course achievements are only good if the game is good. I have played a few crap games for achievements and always regretted it. One Rataleika game is enough.
Edit: Oh just to add I do hate missable achievements. Like you missed one chest in a 90hour RPG and now would have to replay to get that last achievement. No thanks. It means I have to sit with a collectables guide to make sure I don’t miss anything.
@RBRTMNZ you haven't a clue. Good luck platinuming Sekiro if you think that's all there is to it.
I'm a trophy hunter but I'd prefer to see that remain on PlayStation.
Both should have their own system.
@MyThoughts31 Cool you found an edge case. This doesn't change that it is true that MOST trophies are either collectathons or require you to do x thing x number of times and they have very little to do with the reasons people played and enjoyed the game in the first place. Developers have also been moving away from skills based trophies in an effort towards making trophies more inclusive.
I have an issue with the way platinum trophies have become fetishized on Playstation. Games offer "easy platinums." Lots of so-called trophy hunters ignore games without platinum trophies entirely. It feels like they've somewhat devalued other trophies, which are just seen as tools meant to obtain the coveted platinum.
I'd prefer Xbox not introduce that sort of element into its achievement ecosystem.
Yes yes please! Xbox Achievements need an upgrade and adding the platinum trophy system and also a sorting option for xbox achievements from recently earned or standard achievement list order or by gamerscore value sorting and sorting of main base game achievements and the dlc achievements of the game sorting by each dlc title with achievements. I always love Xbox more now and i have 82 platinum trophies on psn and in the many different leaderboard types on truetrophies.com i am ranked in the top 950 ish on the true trophy ratio category, because i love to trophy hunt the challenging games. Also xbox came with achievements first and i love Xbox to do so much better and have more overhaul with achievements. Xbox achievements always better than playstation trophies.
Also with xbox achievements having a plat trophy system, it also can have more leaderboard stuff to the many leaderboard types that xbox achievements has like xbox20 challenge on trueachievements.com with only achievements with 20 gamerscore will count for ranking. That's great as its like actually having to search and hunt for the certain achievement with that value etc.
Also thank you for hearing my voice and feedback on twitter comments of xbox achievements vs playstation trophies
I would love an option to disable achievements on my profile and maybe just have a time counter or games played in order of most recent.
I've never liked the notion that in order to complete a game you have to have a platinum trophy or 100% achievement score. Especially as often a chunk of what's required is stuff extra to simply playing the game.
One game I play alot this isn't even possible as one achievement/trophy is tied to a game mode removed from the game four years ago and the requirements were never updated.
I have my alerts on both consoles switched off. But with that said I appreciate some players enjoy this and I do prefer Xbox's current system to what's on PlayStation.
I think if they did it they would get slammed by people for "copying or stealing from Sony" despite the fact that MS came up with achievements and Sony copied them and called them trophies.
The one better thing Sony did was make rare achievements stand out by the color of the trophy instead of the rarity percentage that Xbox gives. So Xbox actually gives more useful info but Sony gives easier to know at a glance info.
Please don't f copy Sony. Sony is the one who copies Xbox including them stealing achievements. There's so many better things they could do than add a stupid platinum trophy. At least call it something different like a completion achievement or something. It would be better to have a badge of some type specific to each game that you can display on your own completion page almost like collector badges (completion achievements). But even better give them one of 3 or 4 values based on the games completion difficulty, a sort of bronze through platinum thing but something different than sony like green, blue, purple, orange, the colors of weapon tiers in games. This would show who the real HC completionists are with one look at their profile, the ones who complete hard games (gears, Halo, dark souls etc.) and who the bottom feeders are, the ones who play nothing but easy shovelware to pad their gamerscore. This would be so much better than a stupid platinum trophy. This would also take away the now pointless meta dick measuring contest people are in to have the highest gamerscore which has been ruined with all the easy shovelware this last gen. I'm not playing that garbage to keep up with these clowns. Instead the guy with the most high value completions, purple, orange ( gold platinum, whatever) is the top dog regardless of what his gamerscore is and the guy with nothing but greens (bronze completions) is shown for the bottom feeder he is. To me a guy with a sub 100k gs full of hard completions is way more impressive than a dude with 600k worth of garbage games and this is coming from someone with 400k of mostly quality games thankfully. Either that or give us a dedicated completion page like we had on the 360 that shows all our completed games that anyone viewing our profile can see.
@Boldfoxrd yeah, Sony already copied achievements from Xbox like they do everything else, don't copy sony..there's better ways to do it.
