As we reported earlier in the week, some 37 games had FPS Boost applied as part of the latest batch of backwards compatibility fun announced during the Xbox 20th Anniversary stream event.
Amongst the titles that got themselves a sweet performance boost were a number of Sonic the Hedgehog games, namely Sonic Generations, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed, and fans have been taking to social media to exclaim their delight at the noticeable improvements.
We've been playing a little Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed ourselves since the update dropped and we can confirm that the improvements make a proper impact, with the game looking and playing better than ever with Auto HDR and FPS Boost.
What a time to be alive for Sonic fans!

At least Sonic All Stars and Generations are both good at their core. Idk if 60 fps will do much of anything for Unleashed, tbh.
Shame Sonic 2006 will likely never get the treatment unless Sega makes a remaster, extremely unlikely given how poorly that game was received.
Not sonic related but seeing ridge racer 6 in the pics reminds me I’ve been trying to find it to buy. Is it not availability digitally?
Anyone know if Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing and Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed are now 4K?
I know the latter for an FPS boost, but it would be great if they also had crisper visuals.
@Scenes It’s available for me (in the US).

@P3nguinprisM Thanks for the link. Just says it’s invalid and I can’t buy it with my uk account 😭
@Scenes Sorry to hear that. I want to buy F.E.A.R. digitally and can’t either. It’s a bummer that all of the announced titles aren’t available digitally.
Do any of you guys know how I can buy Ridge Racer 6 digitally?
I would absolutely love to play Sonic and RR6 on my Series X, but seemingly have no way to buy RR on the xbox store, via console or web. I'm in the UK btw.
Oh and it seems @Scenes has experienced the same thing.
@Kienda Transformed definitely doesn't seem to be 4K from experience, it's just a lot smoother.
Sonic Generations looks and plays superb at 4K 60FPS.
Sonic Unleashed finally doesn't run like crap and feels like a brand new game at 60FPS.
@Kienda The first Sonic & All-Stars Racing is sadly not BC, only Transformed is.
@Raffles CEX sell it for under £5
@Benjamin Excellent, I'll have a look next time I'm in town.
Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed is my favorite kart racing game of all time. Even better than Mario Kart IMO. If you like kart racing and don’t have it, buy it. NOW!
@Kienda Unfortunately, the first one is not available and the sequel was never enhanced so it's not 4K, not even native 720p, I'd say. So, you can play the sequel with the same resolution but smoothly. Sonic Generations is flawless at 4K60fps. I haven't tried Unleashed but I will!
@Raffles @Scenes I also want to buy Ridge Racer 6 digitally.
Low key most exciting news from the big Xbox event this week.
@FraserG @JoakimZ @BlueOcean Thanks for all the info.
It’s a real shame they haven’t bumped up the resolution. The Xbox One could have played it at 60fps easily, so the Series consoles should have no problem with the resolution increase and 60 FPS.
I’m happy about other games though. Will be playing Sonic Unleashed to test it out.
@Kienda Sonic Generations looks and plays incredibly well now but I'm a bit disappointed in Sega because the resolution of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed has not been enhanced for Xbox One X nor Series X and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing is not available. In between, I really think that Team Sonic Racing is better than most people think and it runs in perfect 4K60 on Series X.
@BlueOcean funny I didn't even know there was a middle one.
As a big Mario Kart fan - particularly MK64, MKDS, and MK8 - the only Mario Kart clone I've enjoyed is Sonic and Sega all stars racing. And indeed, I prefer the first one. The transformed gimmick was OK, but ultimately the first one seemed like a more solid game, and more fun.
@BlueOcean
I actually have an old copy of RR6 kicking about somewhere, but I've moved a few times since the 360 era and have no idea where it is. And cex doesn't have any, it seems it's commanding a surprisingly high price on ebay. I thought it would be a very common game.
So yeah I'd love to buy it digitally, bizarre we can't in the UK. I mean, why?
@Raffles I have Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing on Wii but it looks much better on 360. I don't have a 360 so I'd love it to be available on Series X but it seems that it's never going to happen. I'm stuck on Wii's awful resolution 😭.
@Raffles I have no idea why. The problem is that I don't think we can buy digital US games. I've bought some digital games from other parts of Europe but America is never available when you log in. All we can do is hope it becomes available here.
@Raffles it’s already going for between £90-£120 on eBay.
@BlueOcean @Raffles so I did a bit of voodoo (not sure if I’m allowed to detail the method here) and managed to get the US digital version of Ridge Racer 6 installed. HOLY CRAP it’s Smooooooth!
I have to switch my Xbox location to US to be able to play it though. That’s a little annoying. But not as annoying as paying £90-£120 for a physical disc on eBay so I’ll live with it 😀
@Scenes It seems that we can't play games from other continents 😅, if only they released this game worldwide digitally! Every time a game goes backwards compatible the second-hand price is much more expensive so come on. It's not fair leaving us out.
@BlueOcean I get it. I’m sure they’d make it worldwide if they could. Licensing and all that.
@Scenes So do you think they got the licence just for US? Maybe.
@BlueOcean yeah. That’s probably all they could get. I’m sure it’s not Phil rolling a dice to decide where each game is available. 😂
To be fair they do a pretty good job about making it worldwide where they can.
@Scenes True, we can't complain about the free backwards compatibility after spending so much time and resources in making it work so well.
@BlueOcean Exactly, and tbh I find it a bit weird, given how global and digital everything is now. Doesn't make sense that it's on the US store but ours, seeing as you know, it was released here.
@Scenes Nuts isn't it? I had no idea it was rare, I thought most launch games were quite common/abundant.
Ah I just saw you have the US version, good on you, I was wondering if that was possible
It would be much appreciated if you could detail the logistics here, or via PM. Essentially do you have to switch back to UK/Europe to get access to your main collection of games etc?
@Raffles Yep it's annoying that it's available in US only. I guess what he did was change to US to buy it but he has to change to US again to play it. You don't need to do that to buy and play games from other countries in Europe but with other countries that are not in Europe it works like that, unfortunately. I think I'm going to wait. The funny thing is that I don't have a single physical 360 game because Xbox One was my first Xbox.
It's just $10 in US, heck!
@Raffles so long story short I changed the Xbox location to US and used some reward points to get a $10 gift card. Then used that credit to buy the game. It doesn’t show up to download and install unless the Xbox is set to US mode. If you switch back to UK with it installed it’s still there in the games installed list but won’t launch.
@Scenes I see I see. Sounds simple enough tbh.
If I don't have reward points, is my best bet to buy a $10 gift card from Amazon or something? Or can I buy the game directly if my console is set to US?
@Raffles yeah a gift card in dollars would do the same thing. It won’t let you purchase with anything from a uk account as it has a UK address for payment.
