The free-to-play multiplayer component of Halo Infinite is now available across Xbox and PC. If you have been playing it on a computer via Steam, then you've helped Xbox Game Studios set some new records.
As highlighted by Niko Partners senior analyst, Daniel Ahmad, the game has already become the "most successful" Xbox Game Studios title on Steam of all time. In under three hours, it reached 162k peak concurrent users - well and truly surpassing its other recent release, Forza Horizon 5.
At the time of writing, that number has since peaked at 272,586 players. It's just underneath Valve's titles Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2. We'll of course keep monitoring the player numbers, but it's already a record-breaker.
Again, the game is free-to-play - so that's something to definitely factor in, but it's also worth considering that this figure doesn't even include Xbox players and Windows Store users.
Did you expect to see Halo's multiplayer pulling these numbers on day one? Are you still recovering from the surprise of its launch? Leave a comment down below.

I have a feeling this is going to be huge.
Been fun so far. Just crazy how many game modes are missing. Hopefully they roll out things like infection, soon.
I think Xbox will be making some big money off these Battle Passes if even a fraction of the player base makes a purchase.
I've got a feeling things are gonna go from strength to strength for Halo 😁
I bet EA aren't happy with this. Been playing it all night and its fantastic, no real issues with launch either unlike Battlefield.
Not surprising with how bad this year's Call of Duty is right now.
Does progress carry over from the beta
@UltimateOtaku91 Yes
@blinx01 I bought one.
Having a lot of fun so far and I'm not really an mp guy.
Getting my butt handed to me 🤣
@blinx01 I had to buy the battlepass, couldn't stop myself
Played my first online match of capture the flag. Had a lot of fun and 2 killing sprees 😁 Not bad for a casual online player. Does anybody else get Unreal Tournament vibes from this? I loved UT back in the day so I'm very happy about it.
Played about 2.5 hours last night, got destroyed and then buried.
Gameplay is very fun but the progression system is not good, if they just had a ranking by xp gained system it would've been perfect
I originally played the test flights on Xbox One S. It ran pretty rough on that thing but I recently got a new PC and good lord is it a lot better! So happy to see Halo back!
I don’t do multiplayer but I’m excited as it sounds promising for Single player…. Hopefully they might add some solo player expansions too. Not just support multiplayer if the player base is that big.
Interestingly the F2P aspect and Battle Pass are getting pretty shredded on Twitter. E.g.
SKILL UP
"My Halo impressions: one of the best competitive PVP experiences I've had in years, combined with basically the worst battlepass I've ever seen. This BP is so bad it makes the game less fun by forcing you to do annoying *****, and so stingy it feels pointless to grind it."
ACG
"Halo MP is exactly what I wanted and worried about.
Amazing Halo mp with all the slog I expected from a F2p"
Hopefully they fix this or it won't keep those player counts for long.
I'm sure MS will end up making a good amount of cash from this game.
I’m like low key worries to play people on PC with my Xbox controller…can you disable cross play?
