The folks over at Windows Central have today shared a bunch of details about the highly-anticipated new Xbox exclusive RPG from Obsidian called Avowed, which we haven't heard much about since its reveal in July of 2020.
They've received various details about the current state of the game, including that it's reportedly deep into pre-production with the studio "close to having a working early version", so we could see it in a playable state by E3 2022 at the latest, and potentially even at The Game Awards ("a small chance") later this December.
In terms of what to expect, it's said to be based on a "similar, albeit enhanced engine" from The Outer Worlds, featuring "action-oriented first-person combat and deep RPG exploration and narrative systems." It's also mentioned that it'll borrow from Skyrim's two-handed combat system while also featuring multiple class playstyles.
"You could wield two daggers and be a stealthy rogue, or dive into archery with a two-handed bow. You could use a combination of swords and magic, or go full two-handed magic, which is required to wield some of the game's more potent spells and abilities."
In addition, the game is expected to feature many elements that will be familiar to Pillars of Eternity fans, with the likes of wizard spells, weapon enchantments and Pillars-style guns all potentially being featured, and while Avowed is primarily described as "undoubtedly Obsidian's take on The Elder Scrolls", it's expected to be much more colourful than those titles, even despite its initial trailer suggesting it could be quite a dark and dreary game.
Windows Central has apparently seen early footage of Avowed, and has lavished praise upon it, saying it "looks like it plays extremely well, with refined action RPG combat set in a vibrant, medieval fantasy world I cannot wait to explore." Here at Pure Xbox, we were already pretty excited for this one, but now those hype levels are sky high!
"Avowed went from relative obscurity in my list of most anticipated Xbox games to sitting near the top, especially as a big fan of The Outer Worlds. Obsidian's excellent character writing and penchant for branching narratives, combined with the rich World of Eternity gives Avowed some seriously huge potential, and I can't wait to see the game fully revealed."
What are your thoughts on these new Avowed details? Let us know down in the comments below.

I hope it's very enhanced
Definitely got my eye on this one!
Q) What are your thoughts on these new Avowed details?
A) I feel mostly excited about them, particularly the comment of "it's expected to be much more colourful", as I do like Obsidian's sense of humour but have a preference for fantastic settings (such as Avowed) over sci-fi (such as Outer Worlds). I'm still holding out hope for the ability to play in third person will be their, but everything else for me seems pretty positive.
It'll certainly be cool if we get to see it's gameplay in December so here's hoping.
Avowed definitely one of my most anticipated games as I love Obsidian games.
Glad to hear it's in a playable state too
I loved outerworlds.
A fantasy version of that would blow my socks off.
Sounds promising
Sounds awesome, Can't wait to play Avowed.. This also reminds me that i need to play Outer Worlds..
Now thats what i wanted to hear.
“or dive into archery with a two-handed bow”
As opposed to what? one handed bow?
@Chaotic_Goat 😀 how about a crossbow?
I can’t wait for this, I loved Outer Worlds, but I’m a bigger f stash fan than sci-fi, so I’m all in. I love that two handed magic is needed for some of the most powerful spells. I hope they stick with the length of Outer Worlds, it was perfect for me, not too short, but not bloated or too long either.
This was already one of my most anticipated Xbox titles, so this doesn't do a whole lot for me, but it is nice to see that it seems to be coming along well. Hopefully this turns out to be a really good AAA game that Microsoft needs it to be, not that I have very much doubt with an Obsidian game.
Reminds me of the hexen series, way back when
I wonder if we can play with a one handed bow.
It's my 2nd most anticipated game this gen tied with starfield. Perfect Dark/ES 6 are 1st. 3rd is Fable. Xbox is so strong this gen.
This game is officially on my radar now.
Cautiously optimistic.
Really enjoyed The Outer Worlds. Just felt a bit rough and low budget, which let it down somewhat.
Can't wait to see what Obsidian can do with the full backing of Xbox behind them now.
And hey, at least we'll get this before the next Elder Scrolls to keep us busy!
Honestly there's very little new info here, but i'll take what scraps I can. Very excited for this game though expect it is still quite a ways away.
@Az1ner I like your list but do you expect any, except Starfield, to come out in 2022? I think most of these are 2023, 2024+ etc. especially ES VI. I'd love to be wrong though!
Personally, I've lost a bit of interest in this now I know the trailer was 'smoke and mirrors' and it will have a more cartoon Outer world's look...rather than the darker more realistic look of the teaser. That's a shame.
