If you're a football / soccer fan, there's a very good chance you've heard of Sensible Soccer, an extremely popular top-down sports game in the 90s, and its spiritual successor is set to arrive on Xbox in 2022 in the form of Sociable Soccer.
It comes from the lead designer of the old Sensible Soccer series (Jon Hare), but this game has quite a different look and approach to it, currently available as a free-to-play experience on Apple Arcade in which you collect your dream team from over 25,000 upgradable player cards and play online or offline, against friends, foes & AI.
Sociable Soccer has actually been in development for a long time, suffering an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign in 2015 and initial PC launch back in 2017, but it has since evolved substantially and thanks to a new publishing deal with Kiss Publishing, the target is to release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in 2022.
Here's what designer Jon Hare had to say about the announcement to Video Games Chronicle:
“At the end of May, after patiently looking for the right partner, we managed to strike a deal with Kiss Publishing. Now we’re able to activate all that PC/console stuff that we couldn’t do on mobile. Obviously graphically, we can push things further, and also there is a whole bunch of features we want to put into the game, which we can now launch with on the PC/console side. So, it’s an exciting time.“
While Sociable Soccer looks a bit rough around the edges for now, it sounds like the team has big plans for the PC and console launch next year (April 17, 2022 is the initial target with PC leading development), and if the game can rekindle the magic of the classic Sensible Soccer series, it could prove to be a big hit when it arrives on Xbox.

Finally! A game that rivals fifa.......
Original Sensible Soccer was on Amiga... with better sound on 1200
This is actually a terrible game. It’s a good thing we have SWOS on Series X which is a lot more than PlayStation and Nintendo
It’s a shame the proper named SWOS is dead and buried. Paul Warhurst DMF LRC - a must have for every squad… I really long to play that game. Even the dodgy version on the 360 would have done if they’d let me edit players….. spoil sports
Having played this on Steam and iOS, my thoughts are that they should have updated Sensible Soccer 2006 instead which is a great game (apart from the teleporting goalies)
The hours I spent on Sensible World of Soccer on the Amiga... happy days!
