Update: In the original report, it has been suggested the 500GB Expansion Card will release on November 14, 2021.
Original story: We've got some potentially excellent news for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S owners to share, as a report from Xbox Squad in France is suggesting that a cheaper 500GB next-gen expansion card could be on the way.
The website has been sent a document suggesting the card will cost between 149 and 169 euros, which would make it around half the cost of the current 1TB version. Windows Central has reported on this discovery as well, but says it hasn't been able to independently verify "whether or not this card actually exists."
That's all we know so far, and neither Microsoft nor Seagate has commented on the claims. This could turn out to be a misinformed retailer sharing a false listing, but the idea of a 500GB Expansion Card certainly makes a lot of sense.
We'll keep you informed if and when we get an official response / announcement about this.
Would you be interested in a 500GB Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S? Let us know down below.

Cold war on the series X is 219 GB alone and warzone is 140gb
It's still really expensive but this makes really good business sense, especially for Series S users that only have 364gb of internal storage. Smart move.
Hopefully prices will come down and 2TB units will be feasible/affordable in the next few years.
That's still very expensive.. at the same time NVME PCIE4 1TB drive can be purchased for under 150 euros. Just saying..
@StylesT Those are absolutely ridiculous file sizes for those games. The developers seriously need to clean up the bloat. There is absolutely no reason for those file sizes.
I bet if someone were to go through and look at the files for Series X|S/PS5 versions, I can almost bet that there will be the same asset redundancy found in the previous gen versions.
SSD prices aren't coming down until 2023 at the earliest thanks to the chip shortage and console demand. Ugh.
Surprised there's a few PS5 compatible drives cheaper than these, though once you add the heatsink it's kind of a wash.
@dem1stav I wouldn’t say completely useless. I think it’s marketed more at series s users or casual gamers that play COD etc where even the series X 1 rn would fill up crazy quick. A nice cheaper alternative. But I do agree we need a 2tb as well. I would buy 1 ASAP
Well it’s good to have options at least, even though the price is a little steep.
Would I be interested? No. Especially not at those prices. Considering the 1tb isn't that much more expensive.
I was going to buy the 1tb the other day but it's almost half the price of a bloody console ..so I just bought a ps5 instead lol.... My series X will defo be my main console....ps5 is far to expensive to game on properly ...feels like I am being robbed paying £50 or £60 quid for a game after being so used to gamepass
I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole!
Too little storage to be worth it, ok I already own two 1TB cards so I get that this is not for me, but I would rather see a 2TB card at a reasonable uplift in cost.
That's a great option for Series S users that like to play CoD and warzone and those games eat all your space. We need a 2TB option too though, for me I'm going with the 1TB option, that one plus my Series S and an extra controller are half the price of Series X so is a no brainer.
Seeing the Jerry rigged SSD reported on, would love someone to just come up with a nice caddy to do the same job. Have an 8tb external I swap between but honestly would love the option to expand a bit cheaper.
@StylesT and both are huge wastes of space
I got the 1TB hard drive a few weeks ago. I used £120 of Microsoft rewards money ( which took 9 months to build up ) and bought two £50 gift card vouchers for £39 each . Paid £78 of "real money" for the expansion which I think was good value.
That's kind of a ripoff. Storage prices NEVER scale linearly. A 5tb drive is not 5x the cost of a 1tb drive.
Geeze this is just goofy. Looking forward to more info on the adapter to use your own NVMEs.
@StylesT Exactly. I'd sooner swap my PS4 to a PS5 with the cost the 1TB drive costs. Just straight up goofy lol.
Personally, I'm doing fine with my 12 TB external drive.
I personally wont likely get any expansion card (for either console) until I can buy a 2TB for less than $100, and that might take 2 or 3 years to happen, but again, I am fine with my 12 TB external.
Oh and I said this before but say it again: I find it a bit of a shame that the expansion slot is on the back. If the expansion port was on the front, it would be so much more viable to hot-swap carts based on archived game collections.
A good move to let people access more SSD storage but I'm hoping that the price of the 1TB drops and they start offering larger expensions at some point. It's a good bandaid solution for now.
I'm not a techy so is SSD stock affected by the semiconductor shortages in any way or are they totally unrelated? Can we expect a price drop before 2024?
Only one game needed and that is Fortnite
At the same time, there are games that are "optimized for Series S/X" that really don't need to be. I have a standard external hooked up to my Series S for Xbox One games, but sometimes I download a game like Blaster Master Zero and it requires the internal SSD. Like, why? What could that dinky little 2D faux-retro Switch port possibly be doing with it?
@XxEvilAshxX I’m not 100% sure but think a game can’t hit 120fps if it’s not Series X|S optimized, and the OS simply forces all Series X|S to run off the SSD.
@XxEvilAshxX Yes there are two types of Series S|X games xboxgen9 and xboxgen9aware these are listed in the File Info section.
"Gen 9 aware" titles can be run off an external USB drive, either SSD or HDD, though of course you won't get the faster loads if its a mechanical HDD.
Whereas "xboxgen9" titles HAVE to be played off the internal or Seagate expansion drive.
@themightyant Exactly, I keep all the gen9aware games on my external 1TB SSD, as they load at almost identical speeds to the internal, given that they don't fully utilize the new architecture like the xboxgen9 ones do.
The 1TB isn’t that expensive, especially over the life of the console. The earlier you get it, the more use you get out of it, the cheaper it is.
@Gr81 agree. My daughter has a Series S, and this would be perfect for her. She mostly plays a few games online with her friends and this would be a good size/price.
> Xbox Is Getting A Cheaper 500GB Series X|S Expansion Card

What fans really want is 2TB of Expansion Card at half the price of 1TB one 👀
@InterceptorAlpha "That's kind of a ripoff. Storage prices NEVER scale linearly. A 5tb drive is not 5x the cost of a 1tb drive."
True they don't scale linearly BUT there is usually a sweet spot in the middle and that is currently around 1TB.
Take the Samsung 980 PRO as an example (prices off Amazon UK today)
Similar story for Crucial P5 Plus & Seagate Firecuda 530. They are all subjectively pretty expensive but the smaller and larger drives are BOTH relatively more expensive than the 1TB.
In fact a 4TB is MORE than 4x as expensive as a 1TB drive. (Seagate Firecuda 4TB is an eye-watering £918.29)
Personally I'll be waiting until I feel I absolutely NEED the extra storage, by then the cost per TB will ideally have fallen to around £100
I just expanded my ps5 by 1tb for £150 and took less than 5 mins. XSX can wait for price drop. The much applauded route XB took has turned out to be the more expensive option and in all honesty no easier. Hopefully like people have said prices will fall on these and a 2tb comes along. 2tb is still ridiculous on the ps5 front
I won’t buy an expansion card until they come with at least 2 TB.
The price of storage always drops….. unless it’s proprietary
@themightyant You're not telling me anything I don't already know. I'm predominately a PC user. Which in turn is why I refuse to pay these goofy prices.
The 980 Pro is also a poor example to use as it flat out, outperforms what the Series X uses in ever regard.
Also keep in mind these are Seagate devices. IE: bottom of the barrel storage solution.
I've been out of storage since day one so I am looking forward to a better prices solution.
with next gen games already surpassing the 200GB mark . a larger SSD would have been more useful . to start with i would paid 149.99 for the 1TB SSD 249.99 for a 2TB SDD and 349.99 for a 3TB External SSD card . i think these prices are more competitive and fair to the consumer
I'll just stick with deleting games and intalling new ones lol.
Great for Series S users, you get almost the same exact memory as an X for €100 less
Q) Would you be interested in a 500GB Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S?
A) As I rarely download games but would like a storage option for when my Xbox Series X inevitably runs out of space, this might be a better choice for me than 1TB option for now. So yeah, I think I would be interested.
I don't need to move over all my Xbox One games just yet and something that doesn't hit my wallet so hard in a single instance would be appreciated given my money concerns until I get a more stable job.
