As of today, Xbox Insiders are able to try out a new firmware update that delivers next-gen Xbox Series X|S controller features to older Xbox controllers.
This update applies to Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth support, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controllers. These updates include Bluetooth Low Energy and Reduced latency. Here's the rundown from Xbox Wire:
"These controllers now support Bluetooth Low Energy, which delivers better compatibility across devices and allows for better pairing experiences. You will be able to play wirelessly on Windows 10 PCs, iOS 15+, and Android devices with Bluetooth Low Energy for remote play from your console or cloud gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on the go. After installing the firmware update, these controllers will remember one Bluetooth host (e.g., smartphone) and one Xbox Wireless host (e.g., Xbox console), so you can quickly and seamlessly switch between previously connected devices with a simple double tap of the pair button."
"With this firmware update, we are bringing to these controllers the innovation of Dynamic Latency Input (DLI). Dynamic Latency Input delivers controller inputs more efficiently to your Xbox Series X|S console for a more responsive gaming experience and seemingly instantaneous action."
"We are excited to bring new software features to Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth support, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controllers that were previously available only on next gen Xbox Series X|S controllers. The firmware update is available to Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha users today, and will be available to additional flight rings in the weeks to come."
What do you think of this firmware update for Microsoft's controllers? Have you tried it out yet? Let us know!

That's a nice bit of unexpected support for older controllers.
That's very cool.
It's a shame that all xb1 controllers can't support this though, the original elite will miss out on this. Ah well.
I'm a little surprised the Elite 2 is being treated as legacy support, since we're getting a new edition in a couple months.
I hope that they announce Elite Controller Series 3 soon with the "share" button and, most of all, batteries compartment. I have a launch Elite Series 1, it's super comfortable to use but it's starting to degrade.
All I really want is a small dongle that will let me use my old 360 controllers on the Series X.
Wow, pretty cool. After I just ordered a set of the wireless dongles a few weeks ago, they fix the BT on the old controllers I was trying to use XCloud with! I guess I don't need the dongle anymore...
@PcTV That's not confirmed, is it? Weird that Elite 2 is legacy at all since it's supposed to be current.
@BlueOcean No chance it'll have batteries, I'm afraid. People seem to love the soldered battery for some reason, and the charger-case is a big feature they promote now.
@NEStalgia I agree, there is more chance you'll find a snowman roasting chestnuts in hell, than there is of finding user replaceable batteries on the next elite controller.
Which is really a shame, and will prevent me from getting one.
@robe What amazes me is that it's not just corporate greed. Fans seem to rave about the built in battery and condemn replaceable batteries. They consider a disposable product with a welded battery the "future" and replaceable batteries "backward."
They could almost have a point if the Play and Charge didn't exist, but MS actually gives the idea of a rechargeable, replaceable battery that does everything the sealed controllers do plus offer replace-ability. They could even still do the case charger. But no, fans love disposable things and condemn against the opposite.
@NEStalgia I don't get it either, for a long time now I've considered the lack of replaceable battery in devices to be a negative.
I really don't understand the frothing at the mouth rabid enthusiasm for glued in batteries. I mean if you really want a battery you can't change then buy a frikkin' recharge pack and glue it in yourself.
