It's been a long time since we last heard about Image & Form Games' upcoming Xbox exclusive The Gunk. After being announced and shown off just over a year ago, things have been fairly quiet from the developer ever since. With a release window of 2021, many were beginning to believe it may miss the mark, but the game's publisher Thunderful Games has now confirmed it's still expected to release before the year's end.
One fan asked the publisher on Twitter whether The Gunk was still slated to launch this year. Thankfully, Thunderful Games confirmed it was, with more news "coming soon".
With Gamescom around the corner and Xbox hosting their own event, perhaps we'll hear something more of the game there. The months are drawing in now as we quickly approach the final third of the year. Those 2021 release windows are starting to narrow down, so expect to hear an update on The Gunk very soon.
Until then, be sure to check out our 2020 interview with the game's director to get a good indication of what to expect from the new IP.
The Gunk is launching later this year (with Game Pass) for Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC.
Glad to hear The Gunk is still expected to launch this year? Let us know in the comments below.

That's awesome. This game looks great.
@SplooshDmg Thanks for sharing! It also says it’s coming to GamePass! I’m sure that was known but I didn’t remember it.
Was wondering what the deal was with this game. Gotta think it'll get some time then at the Gamescom show. Love everything Thunderful (Image & Form) Games has made with the SteamWorld series. Hoping they can hit big with the move into bigger budget games.
@P3nguinprisM Yes it was known as an exclusive Game Pass title. You can see it in the older trailer on here.
@uptownsoul I want to say that the developer said that this game is a complete Microsoft exclusive title.
Wow there’s a lot of games coming out. The makers of steam world. One of my favorite indies on the Wii U! Really glad this is hitting the schedule. Hopefully Scorn and Cross fire too. You want games? Here have them. Something for everyone.
@Halucigens yes!!!! All of these (smaller) games just caught up between the big gamepass hitters to the point many seem to forget about em need to get more exposure. There was an odd looking space game (Chorvs) announced way back then that I'm sure was supposed to release this year as well.
I'm really looking forward for this one, but hope they dont rush any of it! If they need more time, take it!
