Today marks the release of the standard version of Madden NFL 22 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, and the reviews have also only just begun to trickle out, so this is our first chance to see what the critics think.
Is it worth a purchase, or you should you wait until it hits EA Play next year? Here's the verdict:
Windows Central (8/10)
"At the end of the day, fans of football are going to play the latest Madden entry in one way or another. However, for fans who may have left the series after years of stagnation, Madden NFL 22 is perhaps the best entry in the series in a long time. Tiny improvements to the way the game plays, ranging from better catch controls to tackling improvements, make gameplay feel even better than it ever was."
Game Informer (7/10)
"Despite its several technical issues, the on-the-field action of Madden NFL 22 continues to improve in small ways. However, the upgrades and improvements are largely overshadowed by the game's problems and the series' overall stagnation, making it difficult to recommend for week one."
GamingTrend (6.5/10)
"Madden 22 is a step in the right direction for the franchise. It gives everyone something to get excited about. However, they are a tad far away from being considered back to the heights of Madden in the late 00’s early 10’s. With time, Madden 22 could be considered the best in the past six years, but in its current state it can’t be considered much better than 21. Promises only go so far, it’s time to get on the field and execute the playbook."
IGN (6/10)
"It’s smoother and marginally more refined, but in so many ways it’s the same old Madden. In short, if you’re hoping for a massive leap forward for the series on the new generation of consoles (or on the old ones), you’re apt to be disappointed."
There aren't too many reviews for Madden NFL 22 across the web yet, but it's currently sitting at the 66 mark on Metacritic for Xbox Series X, and has a Top Critic average of 69 on OpenCritic which translates to a 'Fair' rating.

Is it just me, or does the above still for the video make the ball look deflated...
This game could have terrible reviews and it will still sell in droves because the majority of people playing this game don't read or even care about reviews. The majority of people playing this game play it because it's the new Madden.
I honestly don't know why they even bother reviewing Madden. The people who buy it year after year aren't reading reviews. Of course it's the same lazy effort as every year; they have an audience that buys on auto pilot and no competition....
@GamingFan4Lyf they are also the same people that buy the same call of duty year after year even though it’s the same game with minimal change.
My trial keeps crashing, really wish 2K had gotten NFL sim license back in the day and EA had gotten MLB license.
Love the low scores but this and FIFA deserve even lower. EA Sports is a joke.
I understand the comments above but I know 20 people who are not buying it yet. We have had the same franchise league for several years and we made a pact no new madden until franchise is fixed. Honestly though we know they only care about mut.
The funny thing is if they said tomorrow were going to add in front loaded/back loaded contracts and all the good things we stripped out but we need to charge you 15 extra dollars tons of people would but it. Their greed has blinded them and is costing them money. Remember when they charged 10 dollars to play online if you rented the game all EA cares about is how much more money they can squeeze out of someone
Everyone should check out Axis Football 21. It has the best Franchise and creation system. Gameplay is not the best, but if you are like me and want to enjoy being a GM/Owner/Coach then this is the game for you.
I enjoy creating uniforms, custom football field, logos, and setting up my teams roster and how they call plays when I sim the games. It's great indie game from a small team. I even support them as a Patreon so I have as people would say "Skin in the game", meaning I'm putting my money in to supporting them. The game is only $29.99 and will be releasing soon.
Check out Axis Football 21 in their videos on YouTube they just released a few and you'll see its far better to support a small indie team that horrible EA.
Cheers,
@GamingFan4Lyfor because its the only licensed NFL game...if 2k was back madden would die a fairly quick death.
