Square Enix's 35th anniversary Dragon Quest Livestream has just concluded, and the highlight was at the end - with series creator Yuji Horii announcing the next mainline entry in the long-running JRPG series.
It's called Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate and is being described by Horii as a much "darker" and adult take on the series. Players will also seemingly be required to make some decisions that shape the way your adventure unfolds.
"it's about having options you have to take some options... you have to choose your own way of how to play...you're in control of the game or your life..."
Command battles are also being adjusted, and right now are in the prototype stages - in other words, the game could still be a while away from release. No platforms or release date have been confirmed just yet, but when it does arrive, Horii expects it to be a worldwide release.
Will you be checking out the next entry in the Dragon Quest series? Tell us in the comments down below.

Wow I’m happy this games exists but all the talk about what kind of game it is makes me worried
Also, I really hope DQ3 Remake comes to Xbox...
Fantastic! Although a bit worried about “darker” and “adult”. Hope it does not become another Final Fantasy. A huge part of what got me from DQ11 and turned me into a new fan, was precisely how light heated it can be, even on its darkest points. Sylvando still is one of my favorite video game characters ever.
I sincerely hope they consider implementing the "chapter" system of Dragon Quest IV, in which you played through the backstories for each of the companion characters and then played as the hero, meeting the companions along the way. Combined with "darker" and "adult" themes, and a "choices matter" mechanic, it would make for a brilliant game.
"Will you be checking out the next entry in the Dragon Quest series?"
If it comes to Xbox, then yeah, sure. 😅
Hey Phil, I hear you are interested in bringing more Japanese games to your ecosystem, so there is this other online jrpg that you could help bring to the West...
Yessssssssssss. A darker DQ game. That is what I wanted. Since my main problem with the previous one was its being too much light hearted. Dark and adult DQ game has higher chance of coming to western countries and Xbox. I hope it stays safe from Sony's exclusive plague.
Out of the new games announced I can maybe see only dragon quest 12 coming to xbox and even then that's probably two years after its been on playstation, dragon quest 10 I can see being switch exclusive
They've also said this will be developed on Unreal Engine 5 so this game will be multiple years out yet and no doubt be next-gen only.
Did they announce classic Dragon Quest games (ports or remakes) for Xbox? Nintendo Life says that six games were announced, one of them Dragon Quest III Remake. The other games I found are Dragon Quest X Offline and Dragon Quest XII. What are the other three? @Liam_Doolan could you help?
@BlueOcean the other games were a mobile game, an update/revision to Dragon Quest 10 Online, and a spin off game called Dragon Quest Treasures.
No mention as to what consoles these would be released on yet.
@WCB Thank you. I'm excited about Dragon Quest III Remake and I'm wondering if they'll release I and II on Xbox (they are available on Switch) or will they remake I and II on this engine as well?
@BlueOcean Yep, as @WCB sort of said - in order:
1. A Dragon Quest mobile puzzle game (iOS/Android - will launch overseas in the future)
2. Version 6 of Dragon Quest X (Japan only - no plans for a worldwide release)
3. Dragon Quest X Offline (Japan only for now - 2022, no platforms announced)
4. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake (worldwide home console release, no platforms or release date announced)
5. Dragon Quest Treasures (an RPG spin-off starring Erik and Mia from DQ11, focused on treasure hunting, release date and platforms have not been announced)
6. Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate (the next mainline entry in the series, no platforms or release dates announced).
Hope that helps.
@Liam_Doolan Thanks!
The majority of the showcase was a little too vague for my tastes. No platforms or release dates makes it hard for me to care. Best I can hope is the non-mobile/DQ X games shown off come to either console I own.
@GunValkyrie with recent release of DQ Builders 2 on Xbox, few DQ games on Gamepass as of today, and simultaneous worldwide release planned, i think it's okay to expect it released on Xbox simultaneously with other platforms too.
@endlessleep Absolutely.
@GunValkyrie the thing about Dragon Quest is that it’s mainly a Nintendo Franchise. And to this day, still sells best on Nintendo. I don’t know if Sony can pay SE enough money to lock out Nintendo.
Ugh.....Square-Enix seems to be taking all their RPGs into this "darker, more 'adult'" theme. WHY? Why are we doing this? Is it the Sony effect? Sony sells big, so we'll do what they're doing? I don't get it. DQ has been DQ for like 30 years...why does it need to suddenly be "dark and adult" - wasn't it already dark in an innocent sort of way? And when did "dark" become "adult"? Or, rephrased, when did high-school teenage emo become "adult"?
@GunValkyrie To be fair, DQ 11 didn't come to PS4 till wayyyy after it's original release on PS4, either....
Although DQ announcing the game before any platforms are defined may be S-E's plea for help to get out of the Sony exclusivity cycle as well. FFXVI was behind closed doors and only revealed after the deal with Sony was made. Getting this in the public eye now makes it a lot harder to hide behind Sony deals when MS can now be actively persuing the game. They opened dialogue channels by announcing it generically.
I heard square enix was making a GotG game, ala avengers. Good or bad?
