16 years ago on April 19, 2005, Double Fine released Psychonauts into the world, and little did they know the fanbase it would nurture over the years. To mark such an occasion, the team has celebrated its birthday on Twitter with some nostalgic throwbacks.
The truly unique platformer may not have had the biggest launch, but over the years it’s grown into something truly special with a loyal cult following. It’s gained enough in popularity to warrant a sequel, which the developer has double downed on releasing this year.
However, going back to the original game, Double Fine has shared an image of the cake the team made when it released, and pledges to make an “even gnarlier cake” for the launch of Psychonauts 2. It features protagonist Raz and looks absolutely delicious.
If that wasn’t enough, how about the original trailer which Double Fine has also shared? Despite being 16 years old, it’s hard to deny the striking visual art style still holds up, and the adventures of Raz still look as comical and heartwarming as they originally were.
We still have no idea when the game will be launching this year, but back in December Double Fine confirmed it was almost finished, so we’re sure we won’t have to wait much longer. The studio also reiterated today that the game “is playable”, “is coming”, and will be out this year.
If we were to hazard a guess, we’d wager an E3 announcement, and maybe even news of the first game entering Xbox Game Pass? Here’s hoping!

Make Psychonauts great again!
Heck, even make Grim Fandango great again!
I played it right around then! I was 13!
...I’m 29 now. Weird to think that this game really did come out that long ago but the sequel is almost here.
They should add the original to gamepass before 2 launches so I can play it.
I recently found my copy of the game. Once I do finally get a Series X, it will be one of the first games I beat.
