Well, the time has almost arrived! Square Enix's Outriders officially drops day one on Xbox Game Pass tomorrow, April 1st, and there's understandably a lot of excitement floating around about the arrival of the co-op shooter.
So, while we went into a bit of detail about this yesterday, we thought we'd put together a bit more of an all-encompassing guide giving you some details about what exactly Outriders is, the different versions available, and more.
What Is Outriders?
Outriders is a 1-3 player co-op RPG shooter set in an original, dark and desperate sci-fi universe. The game features 'drop-in-drop-out' co-op, combining intense gunplay with violent powers and an arsenal of increasingly twisted weaponry and gear-sets. It's being developed by People Can Fly, which previously co-developed Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgement with Epic Games. There's also a free demo of the game available right now.
As mankind bleeds out in the trenches of Enoch, you’ll create your own Outrider and embark on a journey across the hostile planet.
With rich storytelling spanning a diverse world, you’ll leave behind the slums and shanty towns of the First City and traverse forests, mountains and desert in the pursuit of a mysterious signal.
Is Outriders Optimised For Xbox Series X & S?
Yes! Outriders is optimised for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, supposedly featuring 4K visuals at 60 frames per-second on both consoles, although we believe the Series S version might run at a lower resolution.
In addition to being optimised, Outriders is Smart Delivery compatible, which means you don't need to pay anything extra for the next-gen version, and your console will recognise the correct version to download via Xbox Game Pass.
How Long Is Outriders, And Does it Have PvP?
According to Square Enix, you're looking at around 25 to 30 hours of playtime by "focusing on just the main campaign by itself on a single class, but it will take 2-3 times that long if you play all the side quests, post-campaign and additional content," so it's a pretty lengthy beast!
"We’ve made sure that there’s no right or wrong way to play the game and that you’ll always have a great experience. If you just want to complete the main campaign, you’ll experience the full story and have a great time with this game.
But if you want to spend more time in the world of Outriders, getting the best items and taking on the hardest challenges in the game, it can keep you busy for exponentially longer."
As for whether it has PvP? The answer is no. Outriders has been designed around PvE right from its earliest concepts, and People Can Fly says it's "committed to making the best single-player and Co-op RPG shooter out there."
Does Outriders Support Crossplay Between Platforms?
While Outriders doesn't support cross-progression from PlayStation to Xbox, for example, it does have cross-play support, so you'll be able to play with your friends on PlayStation consoles and PC. Great stuff!
What Is Outriders' Release Time On Xbox Game Pass?
As we've already covered on Pure Xbox this week, the release time for Outriders on Xbox Game Pass is "your local midnight" on April 1st. That time applies for all console versions, with just PC having different times.
How Do I Pre-Load Outriders On Xbox Game Pass?
You can't officially pre-load Outriders on Xbox Game Pass at the time of writing, but there is a way to do it. Simply download the Xbox app (not the Game Pass app) on your Android or iOS device, search for Outriders using the magnifying glass, and then select the 'Download To Console' option. That's all you need to do, and it's a download of about 43GB on Xbox Series X.
What Happens If I Already Pre-Ordered Outriders?
Square Enix is well aware that many fans will have pre-ordered Outriders ahead of its announcement of coming to Xbox Game Pass, and so has "worked hard with Xbox to make things as easy as possible for you."
Here's a full list of instructions on how to get a refund for Outriders if you've pre-ordered it:
- Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/billing/orders
- Look for the pre-order in your order history – this will be dated from when you originally placed the pre-order, not when Outriders will be releasing
- Once found, you will see an option to Cancel the pre-order listed under the release date
- If for any reason you don’t see the option to cancel, or if you’re trying to cancel within 10 days from launch, you’ll need to get in touch with the Xbox team via https://xbox.com/refund

Of course I am excited. Racing through my current playthrough of God of War so I can sink my time into this. ( Only got the Valkyrie Queen to do, so should get it done tonight).
It's really cool to be able to play this day one on game pass. Between GPU and PS+, I literally don't need to buy games anymore.
Great idea using the app to pre download it doing it as i type on here.!
Can’t wait to play it in just a few hours.
@TuckNorris85 that Valkyrie Queen was tough! Good luck
@Jarobusa managed to get her first time. Had a couple of near misses, and I finished the fight with a sliver of health and having used the resurrection stone, but managed to do a double runic attack on her which finished her, phew!!
All ready for Outriders now
I don't really tend to buy games on launh day so I'm really excited to download and play along with everyone else ! Nice to be part of the current discussion for a change
Wasn't going to get it before, but now I'll have to check it out!
