There have been plans for Cyberpunk 2077 to be adding multiplayer in the future for a while now. It was never fully confirmed whether this would be a separate entry entirely, or built into the game as it is. However, whatever the plans are, CD Projekt Red has now "decided to reconsider" the multiplayer portion.
In a recent CD Projekt Group Strategy Update, co-CEO Adam Kiciński spoke about the company's strategy towards multiplayer going forward, and how instead of focusing on "one big online experience", multiplayer will be brought to all of its franchises "one day".
"Previously we hinted that our next triple-A would be a multiplayer Cyberpunk game, but we have decided to reconsider this plan. Given our new, more systematic and agile approach, instead of primarily focusing on one big online experience or game, we are focusing on bringing online into all of our franchises one day. We are building an online technology that can be seamlessly integrated into development of our future games."
However CD Projekt Red decides to "bring online into all of our franchises one day," it will reportedly not affect the future development of the studio's primary focus (which is delivering story driven RPGs), but will instead use those elements and infuse them into an online component for fans to enjoy.
"CD Projekt Red makes single-player, story-driven, triple-A RPGs. That is not changing. What is changing is our long-term approach to online. By this, we mean ensuring we are properly prepared to implement online elements in our games where they make sense. We don't have to go overboard, or lose our single-player DNA. We want to take thoughtful steps to build robust online capabilities."
Details of Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer mode surfaced earlier this year when dataminers allegedly found information within the game's code. Various modes cropped up, including a single-player quest which featured multiple classes. It's unclear whether these plans have been entirely scrapped, but considering the company is reconsidering its stance on Cyberpunk's multiplayer component, we don't think we'll hear about them anytime soon.

it would of probably been garbage multiplayer anyway
Yes please just bin it.
Yeah, scrap it and focus on bringing the game to the level of quality it should have been to begin with.
Well that's a bit worrying to hear. I hope that's not a sign that they're cutting their losses with Cyberpunk and just moving onto the next project?
I'm still expecting the 2 (or 3) sizeable story DLC!
Another mediocre game from a overhyped developer
C’mon people, the game is still awesome. They made some big mistakes, and they are working hard to fix the game. I’m happy that they ditch the MP. This gives them focus, and focus is good.
I found both TW3 and CP2077 good, very good at times, but nothing more. I'll play both again when next gen patches come out. Especially since I got the worst possible ending on TW3...
Good, Now they can focus on making the main game actually work..
I'm surprised. After hearing everything from Adam Badowski i honestly expected them to rush to fix the game so they can get multiplayer out asap.
