If you play the Xbox One version of Overwatch regularly on your Xbox Series X|S, you might be wondering what the plans are for future upgrades.
Blizzard has mentioned nothing but now - out of nowhere - it's surprised the same playerbase with a free enhancement upgrade. Most notably, you can now play the game in 4K, or with a 120 FPS boost.
Here's the full rundown of all the enhanced options, via the Overwatch forums:
XBOX UPDATES
Optimized for Xbox Series X|S Enhancements
Added “Preferred Mode” graphics option which allows switching between three different presets: “Resolution”, “Balanced”, “Framerate”. These modes adjust video settings to bias towards image quality, resolution, and framerate.
- “Resolution” : This mode prefers higher-resolution output at the cost of some image-quality (Series X: 4K @ 60Hz, Series S: 1440p @ 60Hz)
- “Balanced” : This mode prefers image-quality at the cost of resolution (Series X: 1440p @ 60Hz, Series S: 1080p @ 60Hz)
- “Framerate” : This mode prefers higher frame-rate at 120 frames-per-second at the cost of both image-quality and resolution (Series X: 1440p @ 120Hz, Series S: 1080p @ 120Hz)
- NOTE: Not you must have a TV that supports 120Hz or VRR (Variable-Refresh-Rate) to fully take advantage of the “Framerate” mode

If only this game supported cross play / progression. Played to death on PS4, but not much incentive to play from scratch again on Xbox... I'd pay for it again too, great game.
Odd that the patch notes don't mention PS5 upgrades either.
@bort118
Because the PS5 didn’t really get any upgrades except for the menus now being 60fps.
Useless to me, since my main platform for multiplayers is PlayStation because I live in Japan and simply have a hell lot more of players for matchmaking through that, mostly thanks to Korea as well.
One would have thought Blizzard has the resources to do a proper PS5 upgrade as well.
Absolutely blindsided.
Gutted about the lack of cross play too. Only people I'd play with are on PS4
Was hooked on this game when it first came out for around 18 months - 2 years.
Maybe time to reinstall it and see it with a new coat of paint.
I remember tweeting Blizz about this shortly after I picked up my Series X. Maybe my online prayers were answered, haha! The only thing they can do now to put the cherry on top is have M+K support.
@tatsumi
It's not so much Blizzard but with how back compat works on PS5 and the limitations of it.
If they wanted to add these features for PS5, like many other devs have stated, they would have to do a native PS5 version, which obviously takes up a lot more time and resources than a patch.
That's why you'll notice that even the first party PS5 back compat games only unlock the frame rate to 60, and literally do nothing else apart from that.
The games dead anyway, they need to hurry up with overwatch 2
Might actually re-download this since they added 120hz.
I tried the upgraded version today and honestly couldn't tell the difference... still enjoyed it though.
@Liam_Doolan I played the upgraded version on Thursday. Just went to play it and in my installed games it's moved from Optimised for Series X|S and back into Xbox One X Enhanced. I checked on the store and the X|S logo has disappeared from its store page. I can't find any mention of why (or anyone else noticing it).
@VenomousAlbino I play this game regularly on Xbox Series X myself. Just played it before - can confirm, the X|S icon is still there, so I'm not sure what's up on your end.
@Liam_Doolan weird. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it and it still wouldn't upgrade to Series X, which is strange because it already did the upgrade and I played it. I wonder if anyone else has had this issue, either with Overwatch or another game?
(Edit) The game is also still not showing as X|S enhanced on the store. Is this a regional thing, maybe?
(Edit) It's also not on this list https://www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/optimized#thetable
@VenomousAlbino If you could find more examples of anyone else who is in the same situation, that would be helpful. To my knowledge, the enhancement update was a global rollout.
