Update (Wed 17th Feb, 2021 14:00 GMT): Amazon UK now has the all-new Xbox Wireless Headset available for pre-order at £10 off the RRP! We've included a link to purchase it at the bottom of this article.
Original story (Tue 16th Feb, 2021 15:15 GMT): Here's a surprise we weren't expecting! Microsoft has today unveiled the all-new Xbox Wireless Headset, which will be compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 PCs, releasing this March for £94.99 / $99.99.
According to Microsoft, the Xbox Wireless Headset delivers "best-in-class audio and chat performance, outstanding design and comfort, and unique experiences that are tailored for each gamer."
"The team spent countless hours studying what makes for a great audio experience, and because the team is familiar with the technology behind the Xbox Wireless protocol, they were able to introduce a fine-tuned and configurable auditory experience like no Xbox headset before. With the Xbox Wireless Headset, you can play loud and clear through low latency, lossless audio for exceptional sound quality."
Features include support for industry-leading spatial sound technologies such as Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone: X, voice isolation and an auto-mute feature when you aren't talking, ultra-soft large earcups made of polyurethane leather with an adjustable headband, simultaneous pairing to a phone/Xbox, and much more.
In addition, 30 minutes of charging reportedly provides about 4 hours of battery life, with only 3 hours of charging to reach up to 15 hours of battery life when the headset is not in use. Sounds impressive!
You can find out many more details over at the official Xbox website, and the headset can be pre-ordered at a variety of retailers - including the Microsoft Store - right now, with an official release date of March 16th.
"The Xbox Wireless Headset delivers best-in-class audio and chat performance, outstanding design and comfort, and unique experiences that are tailored for each gamer. We are also looking forward to bringing more value to the headset category with innovations not previously found in this price range."

Hmmm I'm still not big on the wireless headsets as it's just another thing to keep charged. I'll wait for more reviews on this but it sounds pretty good, maybe a future rewards points purchase?
I always take pause when I hear "best-in-class". So, it depends on what class they are saying its in. Loving my Arctis 9x with Dolby Atmos right now, and will probably stick with it.
It looks like a great design, and the functionality sounds impressive. I just wish they would do a chat-only wireless version. I have zero need to hear game audio as I have a 7.1 surround system with real speakers. I would like a nicer option to use when I do need to game chat.
@LegendOfPeach you can turn down the game volume completely in the settings so you just get party chat on whatever headset your using
"Features include support for industry-leading spatial sound technologies such as Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone: X"
I hate this kind of language because it makes it sound like there is some kind of special software built into the headphones to support these things. Sony does the same thing with it's 3D Pulse headset
NOTE: ANY STEREO HEADSET SUPPORTS 3D SPATIAL AUDIO - unless you are PS4 where Sony actually put the 3D Audio capabilities inside the Platinum Headset (it's not an incapability of other headsets as much as it is that the software that creates the differing frequencies in each ear that trigger the binaural response in our brains to determine direction is located in the Platinum Headset and not the PS4 itself).
Now, some might perform better than others simply due to better sound quality, but even cheap earbuds are able to support spatial audio.
Good Price point, as I was looking for something for after hours when the kids are asleep, but also that can shoot between phone/pc/work pc for calls/work etc... Have MS any track record on sound devices? Never bought into the inhouse stuff before....
@GamingFan4Lyf I’m not sure you’re able to hear a Netflix Dolby Atmos recorded content with 3D Pulse headset unless it supports so. Netflix supports streaming with Dolby Atmos audio on select titles. Also the new Dolby Atmos for gaming is something Xbox is the first one to support.
I don't need it, I don't need it, I don't need it.
Sold to the man with a series X and no Headset as my previous excellent headset doesn’t work with it as there’s no optical port....
Looking forward to these 😁
Well the price is right and I like the clean simple can design they went with. That said I am not much of a headphone user unless I'm on a portable and I never really use headsets as I am not big on online gaming.
Look really nice but a bit pricey!
I cut the cord to my pair of AKG K550, soldered a jack (fit perfectly in the hole) and bought a mic equipped cord. I doubt the sound will be better in these, but I’m intrigued. Whenever I read spatial audio I think of my AirPods Pro, having dynamic positional sound based on the direction my head is facing (the screen)… would be so cool to listen a bit closer by turning my head a bit, hear clearly if I really heard foot steps behind that wall to the right… but alas. I guess it’ll take a few years at least until others add that. Apple and audio? Who would’ve thought? However. After a year being forced into Microsoft Teams based meetings I know for sure that “auto mute” is no-no-no… but the price, if good enough… I recently bought a pair of Razer Blackshark V2X, but I can never have too many headsets… I really enjoy the Atmos virtualization, makes a huge difference, but if only the headset could track my direction… I’ll dream on.
Aside from being OEM which is always a plus as far as I'm concerned. How will this be better than my Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 2? We'll have to see.
Cool. I need a decent pair of wireless headphones for the Series X.
I’ll see how these review and if good enough I’ll buy it. The price is certainly low compared to the Audeze Penrose X which I was considering and that’s £300!
@Senua Neither PS4 nor PS5 have Atmos at all except if you bitstream a compatible Blu-ray to a compatible receiver - so no Atmos in Disney+, Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, etc.
Wiring your Pulse 3D headset to an Xbox controller and having Atmos for Headphones enabled (assuming you purchased the license to do so from the Microsoft Store) you can enjoy Atmos in Disney+, Netflix, Amazon, Vudu, etc. using the Pulse 3D Headset.
It's all about processing the signal. PS5 has it's proprietary Tempest engine for games via headphones and that's it. PS4 locked the capability behind special hardware/software built into the Platinum Headset. Xbox has Windows Sonic for games, or if you want a broader range of support like on Blu-ray, streaming services, you buy Atmos for Headphones to enjoy using that.
But even on PS5, you don't need Pulse 3D headset to use the 3D Audio over headphones, any headset will do.
Meh. As a headphile, no consumer mass market cans really do "it" for me. Or any closed can for that matter.
One nice thing with XB is your dolby/sonic surround passes through HDMI to inline split out headphones. On PS5 for some odd reason the whole touted Tempest 3D thing doesn't work over HDMI, so if you break out your audio from the HDMI, you're still stuck with stereo. XBox wins the sound front for me due to that.
Microsoft wireless headset looks quality, can't say the same about Sony's. The verdict is still out and I'll save judgment until I purchase.
Will await a review, as long as they sound good I'm in. I want a pair of wireless headphones for when my baby arrives, no grabbing at the cable little one!
Also, I can use Microsoft rewards points, nice bonus.
@GamingFan4Lyf It supports multi device connectivity by connecting to Xbox by Xbox Wireless and to phone by Bluetooth. Xbox Wireless has lower latency anyway. A ps5 controller has 13 ms latency. Xbox has 7 ms.
I’ve just pre-ordered these from GAME. I was going to wait for reviews but then I saw it was out of stock on the Microsoft Store within hours of being revealed and you know how it is when something goes out of stock fast, it becomes a must have item.
For £90 it’s a very decently priced headset considering it’s wireless and has Bluetooth connectivity. By comparison the Arctis 9X has the same features and is priced at £180. We’ll have to wait and see how they compare in the sound department and I know I’ve taken a risk pre-ordering but I’m confident they will be good enough.
