With 2020 having a huge impact in gaming, and every week it seems a wave of massive new titles are releasing, it's easy for many to get lost in the noise. For every Cyberpunk 2077, there's a handful of other games competing for attention that undoubtedly deserve a little longer time in the spotlight.
This year, we happen to have played a lot of games at Pure Xbox, including niche Xbox Game Pass titles, that for whatever reason might have failed to capture a mainstream audience. The beauty of gaming is there are so many genres to appease multiple gamers, as not everyone is excited for the next big game.
We've curated a list of some of the games we think deserve another moment of recognition and perhaps may have slipped you by in what has been a jam-packed year of gaming, and one of the biggest for some time.
Desperados III (Xbox One)
We absolutely loved Desperados III over here at Pure Xbox. It seemingly came out of nowhere and blew our socks off with its tactical based gameplay. Even those of us who aren't usually drawn to the genre found something to love in Desperados III. Every level feels like a puzzle box that demands to be opened, with hundreds of solutions to its problem. No playthrough of Desperados III ever feels the same and it's a wild west treat right until the very end.

Two Point Hospital (Xbox One)
Has anyone suffered from 8-bittness? A disease which turns you into an 8-bit character? We hadn't either, but it was one of the many illnesses in Two Point Hospital that put a smile on our face in a year which has proven hard amidst a health crisis. Two Point Hospital is a reminder that games are made for one purpose - entertainment, and oh my does the game fill those shoes. Building and managing your own hospital consistently comes bundled with a tongue-in-cheek style that many titles sorely lack these days. A hilarious romp for anyone looking for anything more light-hearted.

Iconoclasts (Xbox One)
Releasing towards the beginning of the year, it's easy to forget Iconoclasts hit the Xbox One in 2020. Bringing a gorgeous retro art style, this little Metroidvania is an absolute delight. Armed with a trusty wrench, players go out to explore the world, unlocking new abilities, solving challenging puzzles and taking on visceral boss fights. The Metroidvania genre is one many developers seek to recreate, and Iconoclasts may just be one of the best iterations of the formula out there.

Deliver Us The Moon (Xbox One)
The sci-fi thriller Deliver Us The Moon gripped us right as the narrative began. Despite the open vastness of the moon, the game did a fantastic job of making us feel claustrophobic, alone and trapped. Complete with stunning visuals, engaging puzzles and soundtrack that will remain etched in our brains for years to come, Deliver Us The Moon was an excellent example of blending gameplay and narrative into one tightly made package.

Underhero (Xbox One)
Coming out of nowhere, Underhero stole our hearts with its hilarious script, gorgeous art style and gameplay reminiscent of classic Nintendo games such as Paper Mario. Underhero lets players discover what it would be like if the tables were turned and a villainous grunt was the hero of the story. With turn-based combat that also requires quick reflexes to dodge and cause more powerful attacks, its level design also managed to make the experience feel consistently fresh. Underhero is a game best discovered for yourself, filled with wonderful, amusing surprises.

Darksiders Genesis (Xbox One)
The Darksiders series fell off track a bit with Darksiders III, yet Darksiders Genesis manages to get the series back on track almost flawlessly with some new gameplay elements. Making the switch from third-person action-adventure to an isometric hack-and-slasher in the same vein as Diablo III, Darksiders Genesis still manages to retain the formula that players loved. Filled with visceral combat, daunting dungeons and many Zelda-esque inspirations the series is known for, Darksiders Genesis is a refreshing treat for the franchise.

Shantae and the Seven Sirens (Xbox One)
The Shantae series has gained a cult following over the years, and rightfully so. The expressive animations, loveable characters and retro gameplay comes together naturally in each entry. Shantae and the Seven Sirens is perhaps the biggest entry to date, with some stunning visuals and more open-ended exploration than previously seen in the series. Borrowing elements from games such as Metroid and Zelda, Shantae and the Seven Sirens is a highly addictive adventure, begging you to explore just one more room. And you know what? We think we will.

Deliver Us The Moon and CrossCode are just so good! Definitely deserve more love.
I still need to check out Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory and hopefully I'll be doing it as soon as I'm done with KH3!
One game from this year that I've recently bought (but haven't played yet) that could fit in this list is Maneater. Just the idea of playing as a shark in an open world action RPG sounds delightful and unique to me. A lot of people seem to have forgotten about this game though.
I don't like Shantae's music and level design but the others look interesting.
Good call about Two Point Hospital, which was my game of the year.
@LtSarge
Two thumbs up for Deliver Us the Moon! Loved that game and can't recommend it enough. In all honesty, I liked it more than some AAAA games I've played.
Glad to see Shantae gets some love here!
Might have to give crosscode a try, I hear good things about that game.
Great article! With so many games being released these days, games fall through the cracks unfortunately.
It’s good to see these games getting the attention they deserve. 👍🏻
Tried darksiders genesis on game pass and it's surprisingly good. Who knew third person was the wrong camera for the series?
Though 3 was weird. People panned it and claimed it cloned souls, but imo it's still better than souls. It didn't really feel that different from 1.... And you die a lot in 1, too.
Nice list. I don't think Moving Out is underrated though, and would personally replace it for Tell Me Why - an insanely touching story often overlooked.
I want to play Desperados 3 but think it’s overpriced. Waiting for it to either hit GP or drastically reduced in price. Hotshot racing was awesome!
@Kefka2589 I still think the second one was the best. The first has a souls like difficulty curve at times. 3 tried to actually be souls. But 2 had that Zelda charm in a lot of ways.
You're right about puzzles in genesis though. Might end up getting that on switch on the sale. Seems like a very handheld friendly game.
I can't stand Kingdom Hearts games but for some reason, I really love Melody of Memory; it was my go-to game during an otherwise downer of a covid-holiday season and brought me a lot of joy. And Hotshot Racing? So good.
@Kefka2589 ha! Well, as my avatar may give away....i like Zelda games....
So I'n that regard darksiders should really thrill me. I played 2 first. Loved it. I kept hearing though that 1 was better and was even more purely Zelda like. But when i went to finally play 1, while i somewhat enjoy it, i like it less than the second. For one, the second was colorful like a Zelda game. Now,i don't need every game to be colorful, but ds1 was from that ps360 era of everything brown, and that game is no exception. The brown on brown makes navigation and puzzle solving needlessly complicated. And i find the combat repetitive, difficult, and unrewarding. Tiamat was one of the most infuriating bosses ever, and i hear she may actually be the hardest, or second hardest boss in the game... Right at the first dungeon. The battles after that feel needlessly drawn out in ways that make it to easy to die and keep repeating it. Too many rooms become surprise arena battles though there's some good puzzling between. Suffice it to say, as a big Zelda fan since the beginning, i find, contrary to popular opinion, the service darksiders satisfies more and frustrates less than the first.
3 is for sadists and bloodborne fans.
Genesis so far is cool, but I'm only just done the first area.
