Update: 2K has now issued a response to this, explaining that the pre-game Oculus Quest 2 ad "impacted our players' experience in a way we didn't intend", and confirming it'll be fixed in future episodes.
Original Story: It's only been just over a month since EA was criticised for including real world commercials during UFC 4 in-game replays (later removing them), but now 2K is also doing something similar with NBA 2K21.
This time around, the ads appear during pre-game loading screens, with website Stevivor reporting that the above Oculus Quest 2 commercial appears on Xbox One, PS4 and PC when starting up some games.
As you can imagine, this decision appears to have gone down quite poorly with fans in the NBA 2K community, so we'll have to wait and see if 2K decides to remove the ad in the coming days...

This is almost 'online pass' levels of grossness.
This is shameful..
Awful, why do people keep buying this trash.
The comments over at push square made me laugh ‘ I guess the PS5 version won't have this problem with its super fast SSD’
They’ll still put them in though lol you’re mental to think otherwise.
@Fenbops Somebody said ´´Fortunately NBA 2K21 itself is skippable´´ and has 52 likes. Pushsquare does not care about the game.
Why do you always have to bring pushsquare to all your arguments?
I bet this deal was made before the EA scandal. 2K probably cringed but pushed it through anyway. I do feel like they will have to backtrack. I don’t buy these games but have to admit I was tempted by the shininess of this one on next gen. Will definitely avoid if these stay in.
@Revengercm I just found it funny man. Sadly people do care for this game and it keeps selling.
@Carck I get that but until people stop buying it, even if the games good, these dodgy practices in £70 games will continue.
This is ridiculous.
@Fenbops
That is funny. Sadly, I’m not surprised. 🙄😂
Unadulterated crap. I'm glad I don't have any connection to this series or I'd be even more upset about this.
@Carck it’s £64.99 at a retailer here in the UK actually. So what do you propose? Just keep buying these games with trash in like this? How’s that going to improve it?
I used to buy FIFA, I like football, but I don’t buy the game even if it’s good because of trash like ultimate team. Consumers need to take a stand somehow and not buying it is the best way, maybe the only way they’ll listen.
@KelticDevil thanks glad someone else found it amusing!
@Carck yeah maybe I was looking at special edition or something 😅 £50 is still a full priced game and shouldn’t have this sort of thing imo.
NBA2K will never be authentic until they properly cross it over with GTA and add an open world with guns and strip clubs. Otherwise it's an incomplete simulation of being an NBA star.
@Carck @Fenbops it's £50 on Xbox One, £65 on Series X. (It doesn't utilise smart delivery so they're two separate SKU's. You only get the "free" Series X upgrade with the super expensive edition of the Xbox One version)
@VenomousAlbino ah thanks for that buddy had no idea.
It’s the fact they drop these ads in a month or so after launch, avoiding negative comments in reviews. That’s really sneaky and needs to stop.
If I buy a video game I don't want to experience TV ads, that is where I draw the line.
@slider271 Honestly that touches on why video game reviews aren't as useful as they used to be. We live in an era where games can change significantly after they release, so reviews for how a game was when it released are often not useful.
@Carck and this is why I very rarely play sports games. They're meticulously engineered to ramp up in cost at every turn. That they're starting to incorporate unskippable ads on top of that is beyond gross.
@JayJ Yes, they’re useful at the time of release, but can be less so as time goes by. And no publication/website has the resources to devote to updating reviews constantly.
My only connection to these titles is my cubicle-mate at work and she purchases these 2K NBA games every year without fail. I asked her about this yesterday and her response? She said she saw it, but it did not sink in that she was watching an "ad". It just played while she waited for the court to load.
