It's been well over two years since newly-acquired Xbox studio Bethesda first unveiled its new space epic Starfield to the world, but since then we've heard very little about it at all.
However, a few images have been shared online over the past 24 hours that appear to be taken from an early build of the game, including this apparent gameplay shot (via Imgur):
It's impossible to tell whether these images are the real deal, but it certainly looks plausible. There's also a rumour floating around that they're taken from a 2018 version of Starfield, but it's worth taking that with a pinch of salt.
In any case, it doesn't look like Bethesda will be presenting any official trailers or information drops about Starfield anytime soon, but director Todd Howard did recently comment on the game in an interview with Xbox Live's Major Nelson, explaining it has received a "major engine rewrite" and will be something "really, really special."
Do you think these images are real? Liking the look of this? Let us know in the comments.

This games gonna be awesome! My most anticipated Bethesda game by far.
Not much to go on. Keeping my eye on this game though
Very excited for this one!
Elder Scrolls VI is still my most wanted though 😁
Had forgotten all about this! Even if it isn't Skyrim in Space (lol) it's still going to be AAA. How good will this look on XSX!?
Since then Starfield has received a complete rewrite of engine for the next-gen hardware - Todd Howard
Even if these images aren't actually from Starfield, I am still super stoked for the game! New Bethesda IPs always get me excited.
I love Bethesda’s games & am super excited for Starfield.
If these are Starfield I have to wonder if this was a manufactured leak to fuel the hype train.
@Akimi I don't think so, they are changing the engine now, who know how longer until release... I hope as @BrilliantBill that the next Bethesda games have better animation and graphics. They have been using ancient engines.
I'm old enough to remember when Bethesda's engine was cutting edge and rolled out open worlds like we had never seen before. Its just a shame they are still using the same engine 15+ years later!
