Update: We've got some bad news! Publisher 505 Games has confirmed that only the new Ultimate Edition of Control will receive a free next-gen digital upgrade, with the Series X version set to release later this year.
Will Control Ultimate Edition give me access to Control on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5?
We will offer a free next-gen digital upgrade for those who buy Control Ultimate Edition on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For more information on eligibility, stay tuned to our website and community channels.
What if I purchased the original version of Control previously?
The free upgrade path to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 version of Control is only available for Control Ultimate Edition.
Original story: Remedy Entertainment has announced today that it will be releasing Control Ultimate Edition for Xbox One later this month on September 10th, including all expansions and content updates.
This means you'll get both The Foundation and AWE expansions included, along with the Expeditions end game mode, Photo Mode and all content updates since the release of the original game.
This version of Control will be released digitally in September and physically at the end of 2020, while the Xbox Series X edition will also be available before the end of the year.
Will you be picking up the Ultimate Edition of Control? Let us know in the comments below.

I’ll still get the physical edition.
@KelticDevil Just updated this with new information! Not good news.
So I guess not supporting Smart Delivery, a big anti-consumer move.
I'm sure this will go over well.
This doesn't surprise me at all.
@FraserG
Ugh. I just saw the update.
Maybe they’ll release an “Ultimate Edition” physically? I doubt it, though.
Boo. I had already bought but was waiting for the dlc before playing. Bit crappy for those early supporters!
@KelticDevil Yeah, they've said in the announcement that it will come at the end of the year.
Been meaning to pick this up, but I think Ill just hold off a bit longer for this version!
@FraserG
Nice! Well I will get that version then. 👍🏻
wtf, first the exclusive bs, no this upgrade bs.
remedy on a alltime low atm
So basicly they want you to buy the game again..
@KelticDevil "This version of Control will be released digitally in September and physically at the end of 2020"
At least there will be something Ray Tracey (!) to go with , hopefully quite near launch date
@Porridge2215 That's my fault - I made a quick change to the article when 505's announcement came out. Only the digital version had been confirmed prior to that.
All these next generation updates.
I notice most companies don’t actually commit 100% to a date of the next generation up date release.
Could be months away after consoles release.
I'm sure they will change this by the end of the week.
There will be enough backlash it will get overturned. But there will be publishers still looking to make a quick buck from this, free upgrades certainly won't be universal.
@Z3u5000 well, there is still a chance smart delivery is used on the ultimate edition. At least I hope it is, seamless cloud save transition back and forth between generations is a huge point still.
That said: this game is still on my PS4 backlog. I guess I'll find that copy a new home and, eventually, get this ultimate edition for xbox. I'll wait for a sale, though.
@Porridge2215 I doubt Control is going to get raytracing on next gen consoles as it uses Nvidia's proprietary RTX rather than an engine based API agnostic version or software raytracing.
I could be wrong, I've been wondering how RTX equipped games will be handled going to next gen consoles. None of them have been confirmed to have raytracing next gen so far.
@Jaxx420 Maybe, but you can't even buy the upgrade if you have the original game. They already have the high fidelity assets for the PC game.
So, I'm going to skip this.
I'm guessing this is one of those "technically this is a different game" deals like Shadows of Mordor's ultimate edition with separate achievements.
Well, I haven't bought it yet, so I could as well get the ultimate edition. But that is pretty harsh to those who bought it early.
This is crap. I bought the game on PS4 and Xbox along with all DLC available on both consoles and now I have to buy it all over again? They should at least allow for a cheap upgrade fee. Even that is pushing it though.
Disappointing, but expected.
Wow, that is not a cool move by the publisher! This makes me glad I haven’t bought the standard edition, which has tempted me in a couple of sales this spring/summer. I will get the Ultimate Edition to play on Series X.
What a fantastic way to punish early adopters.
Remember this game had a big push from word of mouth in the community, so it's specially crappy.
Cheeky, but companies have got to make money somehow I suppose.
Hopefully standard edition owners can get some sort of discount?
Welcome to "generations" - where instead of buying a game and running the latest version like on PC and like XBox was starting to head....you get to buy the same exact game with patched engine upgrades at full price, every 7 years.
Why make new games when you can sell $60 patches to old games on a recurring cycle?
Suck for people who got it but I never played it and it's based in the Alan wake universe so I'm in gotta pick it up.
I was excited for this to release on Steam, but upon reading this news, I decided not to get it. They can shove it; I won't support such greed.
This game is like a year old now.. by the time the new console comes out it will be older. I don’t think it’s right to expect every game to include a free upgrade to next gen. You will either buy this new edition or not. I think the dlc stands at $25 now so if I assume this “ultimate edition” goes for $60 then that’s $35 for an upgraded game if you haven’t already gotten it. I think that’s great for newcomers. Honestly I’m not sure why people like to buy the same games over again. Myself I will eventually buy the dlc and call it good since I think this title is already One X optimized and will no doubt run better on the new console than the One S I currently have.
Did they ever fix the checkpoints? I beat this game, but not without contemplating snapping the disc in half. Easily the worst experience I had with a game last year.
once everyone goes nuts for a little while, they'll change their minds. "Screw the people who bought our game a year ago" isn't a great PR move.
I don’t own this game yet so I’ll wait and get the ultimate edition but it sucks for people who own it and want to play it on next gen systems
