Indie developer Dynamic Voltage Games has suggested that Microsoft "seems to care a lot more about 120fps than Sony does," revealing that its upcoming game is exclusively targeting 120fps on Xbox Series X (via Tom's Guide).
In a series of tweets, the one-man studio noted that Orphan of the Machine (which you can see gameplay of above) is targeting 4K/120fps on Microsoft's next-gen system, and 4K/60fps on the PS5.
Explaining why, it highlighted that it develops in the Unity engine and doesn't have access to the full gamut of PS5 features yet - suggesting 120fps could be possible eventually on PS5 - but as of now it's not.
The developer also pointed out that it felt Microsoft cares more about 120fps support than Sony:
Unfortunately though, Dynamic Voltage Games appears to have been bombarded with negative tweets - which we absolutely don't encourage. The developer ultimately suggests that both the Xbox Series X and PS5 are going to be great consoles, and says "I do the best I can with the engine I have - the same as anyone."

Players care more about games...
I don't understand why the Developer is getting negative feedback; the average gamer will understand that it's the begining of a new generation and Devs will need to get their head around the hardware first before they can optimise. I guess some people will just see it as bias & they like to winge, especially if they favour one console over the other.
Let this be a reminder kids: it's okay for a developer to praise PS5 for it's focus on ultra-fast SSD, but it's not okay to praise Series X for it's focus on ultra-high framerates.
This is so Microsoft can say look series x 120fps it is so powerful. I would rather a more detailed graphical world running at 60fps.
Not many TVs in high price range run true 4K at 120fps with chroma 4:4:4.
Microsoft again chasing not what gamers really want.
@GamingFan4Lyf it’s okay if the game looks graphical demanding I guess.
But look at that game. I bet it could actually run 4K120fps on an iPad Pro.
I think Unity is simply not yet optimized for PS5 and he doesn’t have the time to make it happen by himself. It’s understandable since he is a one-man team.
But he should have known better that a comment like that with graphics like the above would give him a hard time with the community.
well the thing is, what percentage of people legitimately have a tv capable of displaying 120 FPS? i know a lot of people may use the Xbox with a Pc monitor, but still, i'm not sure that a large percentage of people are. those tvs are often a little expensive. as the number grows, which it will over time, more games will have 120 FPS options. right now it's just a feature that sounds nice.
@Dezzy70 "Microsoft again chasing not what gamers really want"
"I would rather a more detailed graphical world running at 60fps"
Do you speak for all gamers?
Some people would rather the higher frame rates over resolution and HDR - there are plenty of affordable monitors on the market that cater to 120 frames. Also, some people opt to use a monitor over a TV for the improved input lag.
A lot more TVs are now launching with HDMI 2.1 which will support resolutions up to 10k and 120fps.
Personally, I'm happy with 4k60 as that's all my TV supports. The game mentioned is being developed by one guy so I'm pretty sure it's a lot less work to double the frame rates than build more detailed assets, features and textures for the entire game.
@Dezzy70 you understand, this developer is was never going to add more detail to the game they are working on, right?
They are at a point where they just make the game run as fast as possible on every console, and the engine is bottle necked on PS5.
Demon's Souls on the PS5 has already stated you can either play it 4K/30FPS or take a resolution hit to play it 60FPS and the system isn't even out yet, which is a terrible look.
Ridiculous fanboys attacking a developer that was just answering a question honestly. There are 120 FPS HDMI 2.1 televisions since last year. Not everyone has one but I do and many will soon.
"Dynamic Voltage Games appears to have been bombarded with negative tweets"
Because we aren't even in to next gen yet and already 60fps isn't good enough. As I've said before, when you build a community around being "the best", whether that means in graphical abilities, reviews, or sales figures, you are just setting that community up for failure when it falls short of any of these things.
@GamingFan4Lyf They are absolutely double standard hypocrites and even their media. Apparently they have sent death threats to the recent PS5 Principal Graphics Hardware Engineer for his facts. Everyone knows about the Github leaks, it’s all true.
@Dezzy70 Oh really, so 🦄s will decide what everyone wants and they will change every anti-consumer downsides and bummers to make it sound like it’s actually an advantage. I will see what new narrative you guys latch on after tomorrow true next-gen 60fps gameplay show. Be ready for Digitalfoundry reviews next gen, it’s going to be a tough watch for you guys.

We shall see
@Neither_scene
Just speak for myself to be honest.
I have had every Xbox and the one x was a beast at the time and the series x a massive beast. I just would like especially the in house studios to take fall advantage of the series x as the never really did with the one x. It’s more where to you utilise all that power and soaking all that power up on 4K 120fps in stead of 4K 60fps with a more graphical, detailed and dense world is more my preference that’s all I’m trying to say.
@Dezzy70 I just don’t like fanboys making it sound like 30fps is somehow actually better for gaming lol.
Song doesn’t care about 120fps because the PlayStation 5 isn’t powerful enough to do 120fps.
Sony can’t even get their own games up to 60fps. 😂
@Dezzy70
Speak for yourself. Just because Sony can’t even get their first party games up to 60fps, that doesn’t mean us Xbox gamers should settle for that nonsense.
It’s just preference for me.
Use the series x power for 4K 60fps and the rest of the power use on having a more rich, detailed and immersive game world. In other words share that power resource. Rather than having a less detailed world etc running at 120 FPS.
All I will says is this, that is what Sony did this gen PS4 and just look at the console and game sales compared to Xbox.
So I’m definitely in the majority here.
And that is what will happen next gen you can see it emerging already.
Does it really matter if one's 4K/60 and the other 4K/120? In the console space neither are anything to scoff at.
@TimG13 In small indie games that need to run quick it does make a difference.
Dirt 5 is getting a 120fps option for both consoles though.
More than a few articles coming out at the moment fanning the flames somewhat. For one article like this you could find another praising Sonys SSD at the second coming of gaming gods.
I feel a judge them where they are out is in order. Can let fanboys argue between each other up to launch day.
@Tharsman
Yes I understand with this particular developer. But I hope Xbox studios AAA games don’t take the same approach.
I would rather them share the power of the beast and go 4K 60fps with more graphical detail, special effects and world immersion.
Rather than cut back on all that just to say we can run games at 120fps, don’t we have the most powerful console.
Have more detailed, special effects and immersive worlds can show power as well.
The trouble is those worlds take a lot longer to develop and programme and unless you sell millions of copies your return on investment is not as good. And even though Microsoft could take the hit I don’t think they like to. So they go the route of less detailed worlds etc, less cost and time and go 120fps and think that’s the way. This gen shows that it is not the way, look at sales of the following games on PS4 none of which hit true 4K not even on the pro. Spider-Man, god of war, uncharted 4, horizon zero dawn and last of us 2. All graphical detailed worlds etc not at true 4K and all at 30fps. Thats what the gamers are buying the sales don’t lie.
@Dezzy70 MS has already stated their general goal will be 4k/60fps whenever possible.
120fps is something that is mostly touted as "capable" and will likely be used mostly for optimized last-gen games (see Gears 5) and simpler indie games.
Well I hope you are correct because I would hate for Xbox to waste the series x power trying to keep hitting 120fps.
I shall be watching tomorrow and really excited, even leaving work early to watch live and if they wow me, which I hope they do, I will be the first in the UK with series x preorder. Microsoft wowed me so much with the original Halo on Xbox also with other games. Also Xbox 360 with gears of war.
And for the Xbox one probably Ryse for a little bit, but more with Forza Horizon 4, which Sony have not matched them with in that style of game. So they can wow me, but the wows have been very very limited this generation. And just to be honest this generation Sony have wowed me a good few times and Nintendo with the switch a couple of times.
What I’m saying is Forza Horizon 4 for me was generational game leading and no other console matches them for that style of game. It is world class.
Microsoft need to match that in other styles of games, FPS, Action Adventure etc etc.
Let hope they get of to a great start with the series x and the new Halo. If they do I will be there day one.
He also wrote, "I announce my Xbox exclusive is going multiplatform - Not a single Xbox "fanboy" complains. I announce that the XBSX version will be the only version that's 120 fps: Multiple Playstation fanboys troll the post. Believe it or not, I didn't design the PS5. Your beef is with Sony".
https://www.tomsguide.com/news/xbox-series-x-cares-more-about...
Poor guy was threatened by Sony fanboys and had to erase his tweet.
Here I thought the Series X’s inferior SSD and Xbox’s cross gen approach would hold back devs 🤔
I've been following this guy on Twitter and he's since backtracked and now blames Unity as its too slow and doesn't have access to all of the PS5's features, that and he's brought in outside help to develop the game.
No excuse for the fanboys though, I've seen a lot recently from both sets what with the nonsense over Farcry 6 and its Xbox disclaimers somehow proving a 10tflop PS5 can't to 4K, to this and its all a bit pathetic
@KelticDevil Spider-Man, GT7 and Demon Souls all have 60fps modes on PS5, whilst Dirt5 is already confirmed to have a 120fps option
I've seen 90 FPS and only in VR is it worth lowering graphics for 90 FPS over 60 FPS. And this comes from a gamer who almost always butchers graphics for that sweet 60 FPS. That said if your game looks like Minecraft it better be 120 FPS. A shame that cancerous fanboys are flaming that dev for posting facts.
Not being funny, but if the Series X can run it at 120FPS, then considering the incredibly small number if people with a 120HZ TV currently, why doesn’t the developer instead increase the graphics quality of his game on the XSX to run at 4K 60 with ray tracing on, and better graphics fidelity?
@carlos82 Exactly, BOTH the XSX and PS5 will do native 4K 60 perfectly fine, it’s just weather they can do it with ray tracing or not we haven’t really heard of yet. And if the XSX has an advantage above this then by how much.
One thing I know though is that devs generally seem very pleased with the jump in power the new consoles have, a proper next gen boost as it were.
@S1ayeR74 the GT7 trailer was using ray traced reflections at 4K60FPS, I wouldn't expect to see extensive use of ray tracing at those targets in general and it'll probably be just for reflections. Everything seems to point to Series X having better ray tracing capabilities but even the likes of Watchdogs Legion on a 2080ti couldn't hit 60fps at 1080p with all of its ray tracing features turned on. Ultimately both of these consoles are going to have great looking and playing games and I just wosh all this fanboy nonsense would stop.
@Dezzy70 speak for your self.
I am absolutely all about how fluid the game feels.
While graphics may matter to some! There are indeed others like us who care about fluidity of my game.
Even on Xbox one x, I have always picked performance mode over graphics mode.
