In a new interview with VideoGamesChronicle, Japanese developer PlatinumGames (Nier: Automata, The Wonderful 101: Remastered) suggested the company likely wouldn't be interested in being acquired by Xbox Game Studios.
Responding to a question about whether Xbox has been knocking on the company's door, studio head Atsushi Inaba revealed that no discussions have been had between the two parties concerning the matter. In a follow-up, he also suggested that any opportunities that would limit the company's freedom would likely pose an issue:
"We’ve not had any talks like that, but I think even if it was a possibility, we’re now going into more independent self-publishing. It’s not that we’re disinterested in Microsoft, but if the relationship were to be us working under their direction, I feel like that would be the opposite of what we’re trying to do now and limit our possibilities. Any opportunities that would limit our freedom I think we would be
against."
Xbox boss Phil Spencer admitted to Gamertag Radio earlier this year that he wants Xbox “to mean more than it does today” in Japan, backing this up by launching Xbox Game Pass in the country just last month. He's previously stated he'd like to add a Japanese developer to Xbox Game Studios if possible.
What do you make of Inaba's comments? Give us your thoughts below.

This is fine with me. I don’t want them to buy Platinum Games. They do make some great games, but half of their games are garbage. And who knows what happened with Scalebound? But I thought the game looked “meh” to begin with.
No thanks.
I didn’t even know people were seriously thinking that this would be a thing. Platinum Games have a much better working relationship with Nintendo that they do with practically anyone else right now. I’d also be surprised if any Japanese studio would want to join Microsoft, especially given how poorly the consoles sell over there.
I'm still salty about the cancellation of Scalebound. That was a real reason I bought into the Xbox One as a huge platinum fan. So it's a miracle we're still getting releases on the Xbox from platinum games.
Platinum seem to work best with how they are anyway. Great games on Switch with Astral Chain, if I was Microsoft I'd look into getting Babylon's Fall onto the Series X or One as soon as possible.
They are a better fit working with Nintendo... The games they create work well on Switch and seem to cater to their strengths... I don't think their IP would realistically do that well sales wise on Xbox..
@Grot
Good to hear. Because that licensed junk they used to make was terrible. But then they put out a great game & everyone is like wth? It was confusing.
I'm still hoping a Japanese developer teams up with MS, but tbh, it has to be a partnership that helps not hurts creativity.
It's a good thing that Platinum Games is doing better. For awhile there it sounded like things were getting pretty desperate for them (and then Nier came along).
I understand what they mean and it makes a lot of sense but Microsoft has said several times that they want the Xbox Game Studios to do their thing.
@FragRed Even if Xbox is not popular in Japan that might change with Game Pass, xCloud, etc. and even if Platinum's games don't sell a lot on Xbox (I'm not sure about this, Bayonetta comes to mind) that's what Game Pass is for. Anyway, I'm not interested in Platinum, just saying that joining Xbox Game Studios wouldn't be bad for them but I'd prefer Microsoft to acquire another Japanese studio and not this. I would love Microsoft to acquire Koei Tecmo which is my favourite "minor" Japanese developer.
@BlueOcean I think there’s more to why Microsoft has always failed to sell their consoles in Japan than something like xCloud or Game Pass could fix. I think Japan is a territory Microsoft should just accept they aren’t going to do well in, especially when up against Nintendo and to a lesser extent, the PlayStation.
Regarding Microsoft buying a Japanese developer, I’m surprised we haven’t heard anything yet but perhaps no one wants to sell out to them. Again I think Microsoft really need to focus on expanding their audience in the West before they bother with Japan.
@BlueOcean If there was a Japanese dev Microsoft should purchase, it would be Mist Walker. I always saw that as a missed opportunity on their part.
@FragRed I agree that Microsoft shouldn't worry too much about Japan as a market but Japanese games appeal to us Westerns too.
@Emob Mistwalker would be good too. I mentioned Koei Tecmo because they seem to have little funds and they would like to buy Nintendo's part of Project Zero/Fatal Frame back since they have expressed their desire to make another game. Ganbarion is another option, they made one of the my favourite Wii games, Pandora's Tower.
