President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan has confirmed the company is working with internet providers in Europe to help manage download traffic on PlayStation, resulting in potentially "slower or delayed" game downloads.
"We believe it is important to do our part to address internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are practicing social distancing and are becoming more reliant on internet access."
The news obviously comes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which Head of Xbox Phil Spencer already commented on earlier today. He didn't mention anything specifically about restricted downloads in that statement aside from that Xbox is "optimizing the service" to accommodate growing demand, but with so many people attempting to access Xbox Live just now, it's possible we'll hear something official in the near future.

Well every other company seemingly is doing similar things, so it makes sense they'd do their bit. Only in Europe tho? So North America is still going full throttle?
I think that this pandemic has shown how the online infrastructure simply isn't upto snuff, and this industry wants to force cloud gaming on us? Lol
If they do, good on Xbox. People are willing to be a bit more understanding, given the circumstances, so it shouldn't be a problem. That being said, internet infrastructure is not where we need it to be, it seems.
@SuperNintendoMii America has a more bigger and more efficient infrastructure than the UK and Europe does, especially in the bigger cities so they can handle more then they can over here
@FullbringIchigo we’ve had internet outages from multiple internet providers here in Houston.
