The incredible Grand Theft Auto V arrives back on Xbox Game Pass today, and this time Rockstar is even bringing us the next-gen version of the title, which means there are multiple editions included as part of the subscription service.
The question is, which version are you actually supposed to download for your console?!
Here's what we suggest. Firstly, you'll want to go to the 'Recently Added' selection of the Xbox Game Pass library on your Xbox One, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X by following these instructions:
- Go to 'My Games & Apps'
- Scroll down to 'Apps' and hit 'Xbox Game Pass'
- Scroll down to 'Recently Added'
In here, you'll see two separate versions of Grand Theft Auto V. One of them has a gold boundary and "Xbox Series X|S" in brackets, so this is the one you'll want to download if you're on either an Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. By downloading this version of the game, you'll get the most recent versions of both the Story Mode and GTA Online.
If you're on an Xbox One, you'll simply want to download the version that's called "Grand Theft Auto V", with no mention of any consoles in brackets. This will download the Xbox One version of the Story Mode along with GTA Online.
Update: If you're running into an issue where you're seeing "Get Game Pass" even though you're already subscribed to the service, you're not alone! This seems to be a Microsoft Store bug that multiple players are running into. To solve it, try restarting your console by holding in the guide button on your controller, followed by "Restart Console". Otherwise, you may want to try installing the game via the Xbox mobile app on Android or iOS, although we can't yet verify whether this is an effective solution.

And there you go! That's all you need to know to get started with GTA 5 on Xbox Game Pass.
Hopefully this guide will solve any queries you may have, but let us know if you have any other questions down below!

It's still kind of hell. There's a version listed on Game Pass that does not have the X/S that this article indicates we should download (which is a pay version), and that non X/S version is unclear if its the optimized version of the game at 85 GB? I think its just the story-mode that doesn't include the GTA V Online. So many versions and such hell.
Following these instructions I just see a ‘show in Microsoft Store’ prompt. Following the link to the store then takes me to a page where I can select three alternate versions of the game. Selecting the one that’s X|S optimised brings me to a page that tells me I need to buy Game Pass (I’m already a subscriber though).
@sonicbooming @Cakefish @BBB Yeah, I think they might be having issues with the Series X/S version right now.
Update: Try restarting your consoles! Apparently that's been working for some people with the "Get Game Pass" message.
The market user interface is still one of the biggest jokes on this generation. Every game should only one entry, with all versions, DLCs, etc, under that.
With looking at the sub selections the version should be listed before the title for example
(Xbox One)GTAV
(Xbox Series S/X) GTAV
What happened to Smart Delivery?
I would just like to know if, once I have DL both the single player game and the online, can I delete online because I don't need 100gb with of space taken up by something I'm not going to play
@Deathgasm87 I believe the Online portion has to be installed and the Story Mode is simply classed as an "add-on".
@FraserG well that is some BS right there well looks like i will only have it on here till starfield reviews start coming in
@MikeHiscoe Rockstar wanting to sell a 60fps patch as a full priced game happened to smart delivery
@FraserG this is the part that annoys me most, I've no intention of playing the online part but not only have to download it but it's also the default mode when booting up the game. Such a sad state of affairs when the main part of the game is treated as the add on
Well I downloaded the X/S version but as soon as I start the story, it crashes to the desktop after approx 5 seconds.
@carlos82 Sadly with things like GTA what they REALLY want it to get you playing GTA Online and buying those sweet sweet Macrotransactions. It's almost certainly why it's back on Game Pass for a third time. So no they don't allow you to delete the money making portion of the game.
Seems like if you have a series X you should download online and play story mode through that. I had downloaded both versions but have just saved 80gb. Before I deleted the vanilla gtav though I uploaded my save to club rockstar (or whatever it’s called) and then downloaded it into story mode.
I'm on Xbox one S and I have the Gamepass n I went on the GTA Online version for X/S and i got to the part where it asked me if I wanted to migrate my character so I just was wondering will the next gen version work on current gen. It seems to me like it does as i got that far I just didn't have time to try it further to see if I got the enhanced graphics on Xbox one S. This has happened to me before as I was able to play Gamepass games that were made for the X/S on The One S with the cloud feature.
I bought GTAV digital version on Xbox one. I now have a Series X with game pass. When I go to download the Enhanced Series X Version it only gives me the option for online. How will I be able to download the enhanced series s/x story mode with all of the updates and features they promise on the page. It won’t let me download it because it says I already own the story version of the game. But they’re two different versions for two different consoles. Help!?
