Thumper (Xbox One)
We were first exposed to Thumper's terrifying rhythm game antics in all-encompassing VR form but this one loses none of its appeal when played on a normal TV setup.
A rhythm game with a good deal of horror at its core, Thumper takes players on a rollicking rollercoaster ride through some truly twisted scenery as its amazing soundtrack pulsates and thunders along in time to some wild onscreen visuals. Piloting your little metallic beetle through this hellscape may be quite intense at times but the game is also surprisingly forgiving in how it lets you make errors and continue along during levels which are bookended by some great big abstract bosses.
In terms of its visuals, soundtrack and super slick and addictive gameplay, Thumper is a thoroughly class act that draws you into its mesmeric world and doesn't let go until it's all done and dusted.

Tunic (Xbox Series X|S)
We've been waiting impatiently for the arrival of Andrew Shouldice's sublime action-adventure ever since we first clapped eyes on it a couple of years ago, and now it's finally here and on Game Pass!
Tunic is a fantastically clever adventure with an exquisitely designed world to explore. It's a great big Zelda-esque puzzle-box to probe and prod at as you progress through a story that's got just the right amount of mystery and intrigue about it to keep you hooked in. This one's a surprisingly big, surprisingly challenging experience that's absolutely one of our favourite games of 2022 so far.

Undertale
We're pretty sure there aren't many players out there by now who haven't at least heard of Toby Fox's sublime Undertale.
A wonderfully well written and surprisingly subversive take on retro RPGs, it may assume a certain level of prior experience with the genre but, even without this, Undertale is still a constantly surprising and devilishly clever good time. This is a game that toys with genre expectations and conventions, mocks and twists gameplay tropes, deviates from the norm, serves up delightfully difficult puzzles, a cast of wonderfully weird characters and an unexpectedly weighty story. Oh, and the soundtrack absolutely rocks. If you've yet to try it out, get onto Game Pass and treat yo'self!

Unpacking (Xbox Series X|S)
Witch Beam's Unpacking is all about...well...unpacking, funnily enough. Not so much a puzzle game, this is more of a meditative experience, if you choose to play it that way, a wonderfully relaxing little game that gives you creative freedom to chill into the rhythm of simply unpacking boxes of possessions into rooms however you see fit.
There's a rather touching narrative that develops over the course of proceedings, your protagonist's possessions changing as time passes, and the whole thing just feels and sounds wonderful, the simple act of placing objects made satisfyingly tactile and addictive. There's some light challenge here and there in how you're presented with objects to stow away, but overall this an experience about doing it your way, playing with the tools and unpacking how you want to. A unique and beautiful thing and one of favourite experiences of 2021.

Untitled Goose Game (Xbox One)
Honk!
A puzzle/stealth game that's inventive, charming, goofy, hilarious and now available to play in two-player couch co-op, Untitled Goose Game is an absolute blast of non-stop silliness.
If the idea of being a complete and utter Benny Hill-style nuisance appeals to you, this is the game you've been waiting for. Scaring pensioners, stealing people's property and flinging it into a lake, eating someone's lunch, creeping up behind folk to give them a ruddy great big "HONK!" and more besides, Untitled Goose Game is one of our favourite indie romps of the past few years, a properly fun time that's packed full of inventive puzzles and funny situations to throw yourself into.

Vampire Survivors (Xbox One)
Vampire Survivors looks like such a basic and throwaway game when you first see the screenshots, but play it even just once, and we think there's a good chance you'll be hooked. This is an extremely addictive roguelite bullet shooter in which your goal is to survive as long as possible, and it proved to be one of the best Xbox exclusives of 2022.
In our review of Vampire Survivors at Pure Xbox, we praised it as the potential "indie game of the year":
"It’s ideal for short and longer sessions, is incredibly accessible with simple controls, and there’s plenty of depth once you get familar with each character - with skill combos and weapon evolution that allows you to enhance your character's power in all sorts of exciting ways."

Weird West (Xbox Series X|S)
Wolfeye Studios, the crack dev squad put together by former Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio, served us up an absolute banger of an action-RPG in March of 2022 with Weird West, a rootin' tootin' slice of western action with a delightfully warped twist.
The DNA of the likes of Dishonored, Prey and Arx Fatalis can be keenly felt in the array of powers you have at your disposal in this isometric adventure, an adventure that gives you a ton of choice in how you proceed and react to enemies as you blaze a trail through its excellent and refreshingly challenging campaign.
As we said in our 9/10 review, this one is "a slick and addictive action-RPG that delivers a top-notch narrative alongside some delightfully chaotic combat in a world that absolutely oozes atmosphere."

What Remains of Edith Finch (Xbox One)
If you're looking for something a bit more emotionally challenging, then What Remains of Edith Finch not only has one of the best indie narratives we've experienced, but one of the best in gaming as a whole. It's ideal going in knowing as little as possible here, but it's essentially a narrative driven adventure that delves into some dark and deeply personal subject matter. Despite that, it somehow never feels bogged down by the weight of its story, instead constantly finding fresh new ways to surprise and delight its players. We highly recommend checking this one out, even if you're not sure it's gonna be your cup of tea, it feels like a truly important game - and you can even finish it in a single sitting for maximum effect.

Windjammers 2 (Xbox Series X|S)
French indie developer DotEmu has been on quite the run recently, with the flawless Streets of Rage 4 and excellent Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap just two of its most recent releases. Now they've gone and served us up an absolutely superb sequel to the 1994 classic, Windjammers.
Windjammers 2 cleverly and carefully adds a host of new gameplay mechanics to the original game's carefully balanced Pong/Street Fighter-style action, resulting in a game with even more pick up and play arcade goodness to sink your teeth into. With a brand new hand-drawn art style - very much in the same vein as Streets of Rage 4 - replacing the pixel characters of old, this is one sleek and slick revamp that manages the seemingly impossible in refining and improving upon a 28 year old Neo Geo classic.

Did I miss SpiritFarer?
You will miss plenty, because there are just too many incredible indie games on Xbox for us to include them all
Please do drop your requests in the comments though, as we'll continue updating this list with new entries in the future.
This is just a start 👍
What. A. List. So many brilliant games.
I would personally add:
So many incredible games! Outer wilds might be one of my all time favourites. Now it's back on gamepass, I'll have to try out echoes of the eye
@FraserG awesome news. Really good feature
Xbox is getting some amazing indies.
@Bartig Yep second Call of the Sea and Last Stop, loved them both.
Also a big fan of Moving Out
I've just downloaded Outer Wilds, Its been on my to play list for so long but to many games to little time. Its a great time for those who enjoy video games.
Tons of great games on the list. However, I wanted to highlight a game I don't think should be on the list. And that is Hades. I think people who believe this to be a good game are high. It was fantastic up until the devs gave up making the game after the 4th level, which btw was a shadow of the rest of the game that came before it... and then decided to make you play and beat the game 10 MORE TIMES in order to get the real ending. Such a colossal slap in the face. People complain about padding, recycled content and unfinished products. This is the best example of that. Lost massive respect for Supergiant.
@isturbo1984 fair enough if you don't like the game but to say people who do are high is a bit much. It's a rogue like game, you are supposed to play it multiple times and you need to beat it more than 10 times if you want the post game ending. Personally I loved it, 100% it and still jump on every now and then for a quick run.
Quality list and as others have mentioned there are still plenty missing for me. Shows the strength of Xbox Indies when a list of 40 is still missing some bangers. I'll add The Gardens Between to this as no one else has mentioned it.
Have to admit though if it wasn't for GP I would not have even tried most of these, so thank you GP.
@SacredPYRO Not true at all. These games are deigned with high replayability in mind, but it is not a requirement. Like you said, its a "post-game" ending. The problem with Hades is the ending isn't a post-game one. Rogue Legacy and Dead Cells for example aren't locked behind forced replays. It's the same reason why the Nier games are garbage, because they make you play through it multiple times just to get the full story. And the Hitman "World of Assassination" trilogy, while not roguelikes, greatly encourages replayability, but they don't hold back the ending, forcing you to replay every level multiple times. High. These people are high, lol. But glad you enjoyed Hades.
Gardens Between, I heard of that game. What kind of game is it? Myself, I'd put Cyber shadow on the list. It's up there with some of the 2D legends like Celeste and Hollow Knight.
Just started (15 hours in) to Hollow Knight.
What a brilliant game. I’m finding it very addictive on my switch OLED.
Tails of Iron is so good I loved that game. I’ve played many of these mostly on Xbox over the past year. Really enjoyed Sable, Deaths Door, The Ascent and Hades. Gamepass is a joy for indie titles, I play more of them than the big releases.
@isturbo1984 I see your point about needing to finish the game multiple times to get the full story. For me though the gameplay was so tight and enjoyable that those extra runs weren't a chore. The RNG element of the boons and the heat level modifiers made every run different and challenging. I also liked how after every run there was new dialogue to listen to so even on a death it still felt like progression had been made.
I enjoyed Curse of the Dead Gods but with a smaller weapon/relic pool it lost it's replay value a lot quicker.
Regardless of our respective opinions Hades does deserve a place on this list. I couldn't get in to Undertale but there is no denying it is a critically well received game.
The Gardens Between is a little time manipulation puzzle game. Took me between 3-4 hours to complete but is unique in its premise and definitely worth a look. It was on GP last year but I'm sure it's relatively cheap if you want a look.
@Hurblyburbly I imagine Hollow Knight really shines on the OLED. So many inky blacks. One of the best games i've ever played, completed it on 3 systems now, keep wanting to go back again and again.
Silksong...
@SacredPYRO I will say this... the dialogue in Hades was top notch. Proper use of narrative story-telling if ever there was one. Spot on with feeling like you are progressing, even when you die.
@themightyant
It looks fantastic you’re right. Just upgraded from my Switch V1 and loving the upgrade.
The game itself is superb. The challenge, the atmosphere, enemies, the music. There’s not one thing I’d change.
It’ll definitely keep me going until the release of Silksong (hopefully in the next 12 months)
Going through the list I'd forgotten how many of these games I've played and really enjoyed. Of the ones mentioned I would say Disco Elysium, Untitled Goose Game, Death's Door and Artful Escape are among the best games I've played.
I also recommend Lonely Mountains: Downhill.
How is this list missing Ori?
I would add Dysmantle to this list, which dropped last week (it’s not on GP).
Sable shouldn't be on that list until it's actually playable at above 10fps. It runs like it's still in the alpha development stage. I played it on Series X and it rarely, if ever, hit anything even close to 30fps and often drops into single digits. I dread to think how it performs on the One S or the VCR Xbone.
@Barry_Biscuits Oh yes, definitely a +1 for Lonely Mountains Downhill!
bloodstained is a good indie game. should be put here in the future
