Topic: Xbox Series S Your TV settings will not allow 4K

I'm trying to get 4K to work with the Series S, but the above message says the TV settings will not allow 4K.

Can anyone help?

The TV is Samsung 43AU7020.

I've already called Samsung and they say I should contact Xbox, who say that I should call Samsung again.

Are all the HDMI sockets 4k? My older 4k tv has a 1080p socket on one of them. You using the HDMI cable that came with it? Long cheap cables struggle with bandwidth.

@Arkz All of the HDMI sockets are 4K, I did use the HDMI cable that came with the Series S and still the same thing.

@KnightRider1982 Then I'd try it on a different TV. If it still can't go to 4k there's something wrong with the Xbox. And if it does then your TV is refusing 4k. The TV should tell the xbox over HDMI what modes it supports and the xbox should show them when picking the output. Something ain't right.

The Series S has a 2.1 HDMI port, which means that I can't get 4K because the HDMI ports on the 4K TV are 2.0, is this true or not?

Recently, I had a massive power outage that very nearly fried everything, including the Xbox, when I took it to get repaired, the guy said that the console needs a new power board and a new graphic chip.

Could this be the issue?

@KnightRider1982 It's the Cheap, as in 'Samsung's lowest end' TV that doesn't have HDMI 2.1 ports.as its only a '4k/60' panel and HDMI 2.0 is sufficient bandwidth for that. It should still do 4k - not 120hz or VRR.

It doesn't have to be the Xbox - The Series S is only receiving information from the TV too about what type of Panel (HD, UHD, 60/120hz, HDR or Dolby Vision enabled). Hence when you go into the menus, you should get this with your TV.

Ther Series S does have a HDMI 2.1 port, but your TV is unlikely to as they don't 'need' to put a HDMI 2.1 port in a 'cheap' TV that doesn't 'need' the Bandwidth of HDMI2.1 because 4k/60 and HDR are possible on HDMI 2.0 ports (As both XB1X & PS4 Pro both offered).

I would try a different port - the TV has 3 of them to try, and it doesn't matter if you do use HDMI 2.1 cables, if the TV is limited to HDMI 2.0 ports, then you'll be limited to HDMI 2.0 specs. Its difficult to say that the Fault is purely with Xbox - partly because none of us have assessed your set-up and checked all the 'equipment' to find what, if anything, is at fault. It maybe the TV's HDMI port(s), maybe some 'set-up' issue as some ports may require a setting change to allow 4k/hdr too as these are often 'off' by Default...

One example, not sure what menu you may have but without the ports turned on for 4k/hdr, it won't work either.

Point is, it may not be the Console at all, it maybe that you haven't set-up correctly, haven't turned on the 4k/HDR port - a simple mistake, but not the Console or HDMI cable. It could be the Console too of course - nothing to say that the Guy repaired it to the same standard as 'New' .

This is a 'Fan' site - a site that has no direct affiliation with Microsoft/Xbox. We are ALL customers ourselves and therefore cannot help - other than perhaps provide 'simple' advice, like check your settings, check your set-up, check your HDMI cable and then if you've done all those and still not working, the only advice we can give is to contact the retailer or advice from Samsung/MS (which may not help because they can only advise on their own product and likely willing to say its the others 'fault' assuming you've already checked and double checked you've set everything up 'correctly' - even turned on HDR on that port to receive a 4k HDR image...

Just an update:

I connected a 1080p laptop to the TV, and when I pressed the info button on the TV remote it showed the display as 3840 x 2160 with HDR, which means that there's something wrong with the Xbox.

Shall I get another Series S and check whether or not if the same thing happens?
