Thought this could be fun... do you have an opinion on a game / franchise that seemingly flies in the face of public opinion? I'll start the ball rolling...

Rory Mcilroy golf, which most people seem to dislike, was almost the only game I played on my Xbox One. As a near 50 year old man playing golf games since the early 90's, 3-click is in my blood. And playing couch co-op against mates, normally post pub, on Rory was a blast. For YEARS... Yes it had flaws, but the basic game was solid, and the 3-click was really good, and challenging. So when I heard EA were finally doing a sequel, it was the final straw to make me buy a Series X and mothball the Xbox One (and the Switch!)... but the 10h trial broke me...

The new game gets great reviews... but 3 click is like an afterthought, with so much input lag as to be almost unusable. It was tuned to perfection on Rory... and the ball runs through the rough like it's flying along the fairway... and don't get me started on the random number generator to almost every shot you hit. All I wanted was an up to date roster of Pro's (not only did they fail to really do that, the player models look laughable), more courses (check) and better graphics.

I've never been more upset / disappointed with a game! Can anybody match this disappointment??

Megaman 11 was bad, they've been releasing the same game from the 80s for 40 years and it's beyond outdated.

I’m like a pizza cutter, all edge and no point!

Alex Kidd in Miracle World on the Master System is better than the original Super Mario Bros on the NES. Possibly an unpopular opinion

Being a big fan, the franchise that has disappointed me the most in my gaming life is The Legend of Zelda when Breath of the Wild and later Tears of the Kingdom happened, that are also two of the most overrated games in history.

@Banjo- that's certainly not a popular opinion I guess, but one I've heard from long time Zelda players. BOTW was my first Zelda, despite gaming since before the NES, so I loved it, but I can definitely understand the view... from what they've said, Nintendo are sticking with the formula moving forward, which is a shame to me, as TOTK was a real let down for me... zero fun exploring a world I'd already spent so much time in

@Dimey That's likely, although I think that a big part of the success of recent entries in Nintendo franchises is the success of Switch. The best example is Mario Kart 8, that sold relatively well on Wii U, but the Switch port broke all records. The success of Nintendo software depends on the success of Nintendo hardware. That's sad for players because Nintendo hardware sucks since Wii and Nintendo is very greedy regarding ports.

I will add an unpopular opinion on Zelda's BotW/TotK... Not only they are poorly designed "Zelda" games but they are horrendously boring open worlds (specially BotW) because they lack the best part of them i.e. progression be leveling and quality written side quests. I don't care about going to a top of a mountain if the prize on top of it is a korok...

BowsersBuddy

I haven’t played much Zelda, so personally really enjoyed BOTW and TOTK. I prefer the second one, but I also didn’t play either to completion. Not sure about BOTW but probably 35-40 hours of TOTK was enough for me. I really enjoy the exploration more than the missions and boss battles. I appreciate I am coming at this as someone who isn’t massively into Zelda though.

BOTW was probably my first open world action RPG style game, so everything was new to me. I've since played a lot of RPG games, and if I'd played them all when they released, a lot of the impact of BOTW would have been reduced significantly. But I still loved / love that game, though TOTK was an absolute miss

I will add another that I am not so sure is totally unpopular.

NO GAME is made better by having a silent protagonist! I never felt I was the in the shoes of the hero. It is a game and that is fine. I much prefer characters who voice their opinions, either their own by story (like in Xenoblade) or your own (like in mass effect or the Witcher) than just having the context given by the response by others.

BowsersBuddy

@Balta666 I am playing metro exodus at the moment. It’s an amazing game, but my character being silent is quite odd considering how important the conversations between the various charters are. I’m in an area where the radio isn’t working, and my team are trying to contact me but can’t get hold of me. I move into an area where the radio IS working, and they are delighted to find out I am ok. But how do they know? I haven't said a word

It certainly doesn’t ruin the game in the slightest but it just feels odd! Especially in a game where your not choosing what your character says etc.

@Balta666 yeah definitely. Metro exodus Is even more odd, in that your character speaks during loading screens as he basically reminds you of the story…and then gameplay starts and he is as quiet as can be

I wonder if the idea is that in some games it’s ‘your’ character, you are making the choices, and so they don’t want to give you a voice that isn’t your own. But it often just feels a bit weird to me, people asking questions etc and then your character doesn’t respond

There have been several greats games that have done this, and it doesn’t ruin them but it can be a bit jarring, I completely agree.

@Utena-mobile I liked Halo 1, 2, 3, 3 ODST and Reach. I didn't like Halo 4 but I hated Halo 5, not just because of the shoe-horned stories, but mostly because of the gameplay. Halo 5's gameplay is a mess. Sometimes, I write reviews on "Last game you beat" because I wait to beat the game before talking about it. I wrote on "Now playing..." about Halo The Master Chief Collection as I beat each game. I love Halo Infinite, it's the best modern shooter along with Doom Eternal, in my opinion (obviously), so it's obvious that something changed in 343 Industries.

I have written a lot about Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but in one sentence I'd say that they butchered the best things and created an open-world template that would have got mediocre reviews if it wasn't made by Nintendo but Ubisoft. Actually, the best "Breath of the Tears" game is Ubisoft's Immortals Fenyx Rising. However, for same reason I kept playing the last two Zelda games until there was little else to do, because I don't mind exploring them as a relaxing activity, every now and then, when I don't mind being bored at the same time.

I agree with you about Tears of the Kingdom being generally worse, basically because it didn't fix anything about the UI and made controls more convoluted, but at least it has many more things to do, since Breath of the Wild is hollow, although I know some people love that. I didn't enjoy The Depths and the Sky is just a small expansion. My favourite The Legend of Zelda games still are Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. I consider Skyward Sword an okay game with a poor story, characters and bosses, but I think it's a bit more focused than the Wii U/Switch games and at least has some good dungeons.

having played all of the COD campaigns in the last 18 months, except COD 1-3, the only one I couldn't stand was world at war, which seems to get unanimous love on the net. I hated it, and couldn't get anywhere in the campaign, it felt so badly balanced... It's no doubt partly down to my lack of skills, but I managed fine with literally every other COD (13 or 14 of them)...

@Utena-mobile One of the things I wrote about Halo 4 and 5 is precisely how Hollywood they are.

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are exactly that, cosy games, in a sense some kind of Animal Crossing open world but wilder. Not the Zelda games I love, but somewhat entertaining.

I remember nice things about Skyloft, but the last impression etched in my memory after beating the game was, I don't ever want to replay it again 😅. That made easy to skip Nintendo's greedy port on Switch.
