Has anyone ever had issues with buying games on the Xbox store, where you selected to use credit but it still took money from your bank account?

I wanted to buy a game using roughly £25 credit and then use my bank card to cover the rest, but it took the full £50 from my bank card. I thought maybe I had made a mistake, so I cancelled the pre order and got a full refund. Went to buy it again and definitely had the right option selected, but it seems to be doing the same thing.

This was for a pre order so I will just wait for the release (later on today) and try buying it once it’s out, but has anyone else ever had this? If so, what’s the fix?

@BowsersBuddy This is what I can tell you. When I bought Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster bundle, I used my remaining Microsoft account credit. Trying to use my credit card, the full amount was going to be charged on the credit card account. I switched to Paypal and it worked, so it was either a glitch or the purchase could not be split into Microsoft account credit and credit card.

@Banjo- thank you, I have definitely been able to purchase using my card combined with credit before so I’m not sure what the issue is. I realised it would be easier just to buy some more credit and buy the game that way, and it’s worked now!

@BowsersBuddy This is the first time that this issue happens to me, too. Topping the Microsoft credit up is a good idea.

@BowsersBuddy This happened to me when I bought my Series X. I had a fair chunk of the cost in store credit via cheap cards from CD-Keys, Eneba etc, but they took the full amount from my card instead of just the balance.

I did get it sorted eventually after contacting Customer Services where they reset my credit to £0 and refunded my card. Interestingly, they said it was a known issue when using store credit for partial payment - seems like they still haven't sorted it though. I've used partial store credit for purchases before and since and this was the only time there's been an issue.

@dmcc0 it’s a strange one, especially if it’s an issue they have known about for a while! I am sure I have done this before without difficulty, but perhaps I haven’t…

luckily they allowed me to easily cancel the pre order and refunded me within a few days. Moving forwards I will just order credit, as most stores email you the code very quickly anyway!

@BowsersBuddy Yeah, I seriously thought I'd messed up when I noticed the full amount charged to the card. I didn't really have another few hundred pounds 'spare' and no need for nearly £400 in credit!

The refund took nearly a week to process though, so there was a point where I hadn't got the refund yet, and they'd reset my credit to £0. The whole time I was panicking, thinking if the refund didn't appear would anyone at CS believe what had happened!

@dmcc0 I also though it was my mistake, but I tried a few times and realised it was not. The credit card was not charged because my bank requested verification via SMS. I switched to Paypal plus Microsoft credit, but topping Microsoft credit up if you need more is also an option.

@dmcc0 oh wow! Yeah that would be a worry. Pleased it worked out for you in the end! My (thankfully, due to not needing them often) very limited experience with Xbox customer support has been pretty positive, but it’ would definitely be a concern when it’s that much money!

@Banjo- To be honest, I can't actually remember if it was direct to card or PayPal - I have both registered to my MS account. Possibly with PayPal as I vaguely remember seeing the verification email going though and thinking it might've just been an initial authorisation for the full amount that would adjust when the store credit was taken off...It didn't! It got sorted in the end though.

In hindsight it probably would've just been less hassle to top up the store credit and pay the whole balance with that.
