Topic: Can my Xbox use more than one external HDD/SSD? If so, what’s a good third party SSD?

Yousef-

I’ve been slowly moving into ninth gen gaming. For the longest time, I relied on my 4TB HDD, because I didn’t game much outside of my 7th gen and 8th gen games.

I can store 9th gen games on my HDD, but I can’t play them. And they still hog space and moving them can be really slow.

What’s your recommended third party SSD external brand for Xbox Series S? WD? Seagate? I use a Seagate HDD, but I’m exploring other options.

can a 1TB external be found at a good price? If so, should I go for 2TB?

@Yousef- sorry if I misunderstood, but i am pretty sure you can only play Xbox Series X/S games that are installed on either the inbuilt hard drive, or one of the official expansion cards. I dont think you can play current gen games off of an external SSD. You would be able to play Xbox One/360 games from an external SSD, though.

Edit: i should add, I realise that I haven’t answered your original question. But when you said this: “I can store 9th gen games on my HDD, but I can’t play them. And they still hog space and moving them can be really slow.” It made me wonder if you were hoping that an external SSD might allow you to play Series games from the external drive, which it wont. However, i believe it may allow you to move games from your internal hard drive to the external SSD at a faster rate than your current external drive.

@Yousef- You can store Series X/S games on an external hardrive but you can't play them from them, you would have to move them to the internet harddrive to play them.

What you would need is the expansion card either from Seagate or WD for the Series X/S. They can be a bit pricey though but once you get one you will be able to put your Series X/S games on that. An external harddrive will only let you play backwards compatible games from it.

@BowsersBuddy @Tasuki thank you guys this is exactly the answers I was looking : D
I was pretty ignorant to Xbox not playing 9th gen games from an external drive, even if it was on an SSD. I thought that only applies to HDDs. Which I suppose means I need to upgrade my internal SSD, in which case I’ll have to rework my entire plan. Back to the drawing board then!

I can probably find decent internal SSDs, maybe even first party! Not in a hurry though, since most of my 9th gen games in the future playthroughs are gonna be “newer” versions of old games I already own (dead rising deluxe remaster, sonic x shadow, lollipop chainsaw, etc) so after I finish them, it’s likely I’ll just go back to the older versions for space reasons.

This was Really helpful tho so thx : D

If you’re looking for a recommendation on the best external storage for a Series X|S, I’d definitely go for a Samsung T7 or T9 SSD - get the largest capacity that you can afford.

I have a Series X, with the 1TB expansion card (so 2TB optimised storage in total), and still don’t have enough room - however, having an external SSD really makes managing your game storage so much easier. A decent external SSD is so much faster than the old portable HDDs, so it’s a no-brainer, if you can afford it.
