Hello everybody! I searched for similar topics in the forums, but I didn't have luck. This will be my first forum topic . If the mods think this one isn't worth it or I am missing something from the community rules, feel free to do any change.
So...it's all about the music!
I was listening to the Nier: Automata soundtrack yesterday on Apple Music. I think this one's of my favorite videogame soundtracks ever! Such beautiful and epic melodies for such a beautiful and epic game.
That lead me to this question: what are other great VG soundtracks to me? So, I came with a nice little list, in no particular order:
Killer7 (obviously I love that game, as everybody can tell from my profile name and pic).
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Nier: Automata
Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
So, I'll leave this question for my fellow gamers: what are your favorite VG soundtracks?
I have to say i never really listen to soundtracks outside of a game and while playing the game i do hear the music, i never judge the soundtrack as a whole, so its hard to say which has the best sound track for me. Nier Automata like @HarmanSmith mentioned has a stellar sound track, the music fits perfectly to the game and FF 14 also has some stellar songs in it. Most Japanese games tend to have stellar soundtracks.
But i can enjoy music in western games just as much. Brutal Legends for instance has some great metal songs in it and i was just cruising around in the car doing nothing sometimes just listening to the music. Kinda the same thing i sometimes do in games where they have radio stations, like Gta/saints row etc.
If the music isnt great in a game i usually just put spotify on in the background and listen to what i want while gaming.
@Lavalera more often than not, I do the same: just focus on the game and fire it up Spotify (or Apple Music; btw, too bad this app isn't on Xbox yet) in the background. But some games have music that, like, really graaabs me because of the melodies or the mood it conveys. For instance, that's some epic music on some of the Colossi fights in Shadow of the Colossus. The first hour in Nier: Automata has a perfect match of music/gameplay/plot. And some other music it's just so catchy and fun, like the Tecks Mecks track in Killer7.
Digital Devil Saga 1, but the second one has a kind of annoying style,
Danganronpa 1 & 2, don't really know why,
Raidou Kuzunoha vs. various things, those ones are good, but I can't remember the names.
Truly I am mankind's natural foe! Evil Incarnate! A walking cataclysm! A shapeless insanity! GUNDHAM TANAKA!
Kelpies. Be they hound or horse?
Currently Playing on Switch: Chaos Head Noah, Emio - The Smiling Man, Terraria.
Any boss music fight in any From Software titles
MGS5
FF13
Super Mario Galaxy
Horizon Zero Dawn
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time / Twilight Princess
Metal Hellsinger
A special note for sandbox / openworld games with radio stations such as GTA3/4/5 and Cyberpunk 2077. Features a wide range of great alternative music artists and bands, which would never be heard of, provided there's alternative rock stations in countries of residence.
I might add to this at some point but my favourite soundtracks include:
Street Fighter 2 (especially Ryu's theme)
Metal Gear Solid series (especially the MGS title theme and Snake Eater, pumping Man Who Sold the World on the speaker right now!)
Sonic 1-3
Almost all the Zelda games, especially Ocarina of Time, BotW and the original
Doom (especially the new ones)
Duke Nukem 3D
Tony Hawk's 1-4 (dear lord mightyant, you making me remember a few more!)
The Talos Principle
Yakuza 5 (specifically Haruka's chapters - I just love "So Much More"!)
Will also echo mightyant's choice of VVVVVV, that's a banger and I would chuck in King Oddball as another indie title with a great soundtrack. Mobile-wise, I'd say Pixel Puzzle collection but it's made up of a greatest hits of Konami tunes!
@themightyant That's a great list! I haven't played Mario Galaxy yet, but I will soon, I hope. OoT is stellar, too - great memories from those tunes!
I am at the beginning of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and the music is great too, at least so far.
@ralphdibny How could I forget the MGS series? Loved the Main Theme of MGS2 and man..."Snake Eater" from MGS3 always brings tears to my eyes (because MGS3 was the first game I bought with the cash earned in my first job ).
I haven't played The Talos Principle, but it looks interesting to me. Is it good?
@HarmanSmith I occasionally put these songs on, I just love listening to them even without playing the game, especially Snake Eater! Even though it's really emotional, I always still laugh out loud when she unironically sings "some days you feed on a tree frog" 😂
The main MGS theme gets me really emotional too. I actually bought a cameo from Paul Eiding (the voice of Roy Campbell) for my brother's birthday. He wears the hat and glasses, plays the music as he speaks etc. Even though the message isn't for me personally, I was so chuffed with it that it almost had me in tears too.
I just remembered another sound track I like and it's Yakuza 5, specifically Haruka's chapters where you live the life of an idol and have to sing the songs in a rhythm game. Gona add that to my list now! 😀
The Talos Principle is probably my favourite non franchised game that I've ever played. Easily one of the best games I've ever played. It's just a puzzle game but it's super hard and satisfying to solve. Think Portal but on a mix of crack, PCP and meth. It's completely mind boggling. Those puzzles mixed with the music, the lore, the setting and the atmosphere really is just something to behold!
