It's become a yearly tradition for us here at Pure Xbox to ask the question of how well you're managing your Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S storage, and in 2024 it's become harder than ever to manage it effectively.
In 2023, 40% of all Pure Xbox voters told us that their internal storage was basically full on Xbox Series X, and 51% on Xbox Series S. Naturally, AAA games have continued to increase in size over the past 24 months, and we're willing to bet those figures will be even higher when it comes to the 2024 version of these polls.
The one saving grace might be the existence of the 1TB Carbon Black Xbox Series S, which came out last September. Nevertheless, the majority of Series S users in 2024 are still using the 512GB version (which actually ships with about 400GB of usable storage), and realistically that's an unfeasible figure for a lot of Xbox fans these days.
We also ran some other polls about external storage last year that delivered some interesting results. The majority of Pure Xbox voters told us they were interested in buying a dedicated Expansion Card for their Xbox Series X or S, but at the time they were considered to be too expensive. Instead, it seems like a lot of people reverted to external harddrives (or SSDs) for storage, even though they can't be used for actually playing optimised Xbox Series X|S games.
Things have changed since then, though. Seagate announced some permanent price cuts for a variety of Expansion Cards in May of 2023, and then Western Digital brought a couple of new options to the market later in the year. These are still expensive sources of external storage, but they're at least not quite as expensive as they used to be.
So, let's run this back! Below, you'll find all the same polls as we provided last year, and we're very interested to see how things fare this time around. If you have any other thoughts to share, let us know down in the comments section below.

Bought a 2tb ssd card for my series X couple months ago, so storage is good. I need to get one for ps5 too eventually
I always have like 20 games installed, and that's enough for me.
The expansion card was the first thing I bought with the Series S.
I have a few big games on my series X that take up loads of space. I've not (yet?) got an expansion card. But to be honest I could probably delete the big games as I don't play them anymore. Forza Horizon 5 is awesome but I don't have time to keep playing with newer games and it's absolutely enormous now.
I found the combo box of a external hard drive and an expansion card at Walmart and I couldn't pass it up. It was a decent deal and I was just able to use the external hard drive to do a full copy of my Xbox One files before doing the SSD upgrade on that, so I didn't have to do a huge redownload of all my files back to that Xbox One.
I went all digital since Xbox360 era, so storage has been an issue since day one for me on this generation.
keep in mind: it's the same on Steam and PS5.
I never have more than 70% full on either series x or s. Both are currently about 50%.
I begin the download of my next game when almost done with a game then delete as soon as finished. I only have 2 or 3 forever games installed at a time.
I delete games when I am done with them, so storage isn’t an issue.
Series X here
I try to keep it about 50% and that's WITH the 1 or 2 (I forgot which I bought) tb expansion card!
PS4 & XSeX games are ridiculous with file sizes!
They (M$ and $ony and 2nd/3rd parties) NEED to go to Ninty and learn how to how to Optimize games!
I hate it. As I prefer to game on a whim. The cards are too expensive especially for the amount of game space you get. I have over 700 games on switch and at least half are digital and I can manage that and saves with a 1.5 TB card. It just means I spend more time on the switch and less on the twins. Restricting games to a certain storage type is a mess.
I contemplated getting an expansion card in the past (held off for a discount) but nowadays I only have 1 game installed on my Series X so no need for me to get one.
Mine is doing better now since I picked up an expansion card last Black Friday for my Series X. I also have my external HD from my Xbox One for my BC games.
I’m around 67% on the Series X. Eventually I will need an expansion card.
My Series X is typically always between 80% - 100% full. I’m usually removing games right after beating them to make room for new titles. Most games aren’t huge but the few that are take up like 120gb - 200gb each lol
Only because Gamepass is so amazing and the backlog is clogging my space…
Have a series s bought a 512gb seagate expansion card over Christmas no problems since but storage was a big headache before that
@GamingFan4Lyf exactly. You can only play a handful of games at the same time, maybe jumping from one to another, and just redownload something when the time comes. Such a pointless and unnecessary worry and a pointless article. Dunno why I bothered to even comment on it it's such a non issue actually
Even the 2TB expansion card is crap, the fact they limit games to only be able to play from a proprietary first-party overpriced storage media which you can only connect one of is crap. My games collection spans 2x 4TB SSD drives, a 2tb expansion card and all my internal storage... have to keep moving games over to SSD when I finish them (making them unplayable unless moved back) to make room for new titles, utter garbage!
Load times and performance of games that can run from SSD I have compared versus moving them to internal storage, the benefit is minimal, maybe a couple seconds faster from internal. I see no valid reason to FORCE users to have to use a specific storage device; it should be MY choice which games I care about faster load times, and which ones I'm fine playing from SSD, but then if they let us do that they'd be mi$$ing out.
It is especially egregious in that EVERY new game requires being installed on internal storage, even dinky little indie titles, 2D games with SNES-like graphics, games which would have 1 sec load times from a floppy disk, puzzle games, arcade ports, anything "X/S optimized" requires internal storage... for absolutely no good reason!
This even includes games which PREVIOUSLY played from external SSD just fine, but after an "X/S" update patch, they suddenly become unplayable unless moved to internal storage, just further proof no game NEEDS to be on internal storage; it's literally just a money grab move to sell proprietary storage cards.
I recently bought the 2TB expansion card which I really really needed. Now I can keep all my SX optimized games installed and everything else on my old wd playbook so I can finally have every game I own ready to play.
I have the 2TB expansion card and a 4TB SSD connected via USB. So I’ve got tones of storage and also delete games when I’m done or if I haven’t played them in a long awhile.
I love having older games saved on my external drive, being able to jump into some perverse gen of classic game when I feel like it is very nice.
I think I’m using 3.5TB of my 7TB of storage.
I have a Series X. Bought Seagate 2TB expansion card and Seagate 8TB Game Drive Hub. Plenty of space. Have just a little over 200 games with plenty of room to spare.
It is becoming increasingly annoying how storage has become such a hindrance to gaming. I’d say storage is the primary reason I don’t play my Series X as much as I should. It’s a great system , you just need that storage to really take advantage of all the value Gamepass offers. The size of some of these updated tho 🙄
I have over 800 games installed for my Series X stored between internal memory, 1TB card and 16TB HDD.
I use my Series S as a Game Pass machine so I only normally have about 20 games installed at any one time.
I am honestly a gamer committer I commit to one or two games no need to clog up my storage for games that I don't even play especially now that I'm getting older 😆😂🫵🏻
@NeutronOverload Absolutely. Thank you for telling it like it is. Most games are just fine on an external drive. If we could choose, this problem wouldn't exist. First force the world digital, then hold them to ransom with storage.
I absolutely need to buy an expansion card but they are too expensive at the moment to make me jump, so I put up with installing/uninstalling and sometime simply not play games that I would feel like because they’re not on the hdd.
My father in law come about once every month and he’s a big flight simulator fan, so I have to make space for that every 4 weeks or so…
I genuinely don't understand why console manufacturers arent more generous with storage space or at least provide better value expansion cards.
While I may finish and then delete some adventure games, the lack of space often stops me from buying some multiplayer or arcade games that I'd want permanently installed.
I'd have thought that they would more than get their money back if they sold own brand expansion cards at cost price or a small loss.
I think i'm in the minority, but I actually prefer the option Xbox went with for their storage. I have an Xbox Series X in the living room, and then a Series S (with an attached screen) that I use to game in my office and when im away. The 1TB storage card allows me to download games i want to switch between on the consoles and plug and play without needing to upgrade both. I'm wondering will they continue this format if they release next gen consoles or a handheld?
I bought the 1 terabyte expansion card for my series x plus I use a 2 terabyte external drive to store all the Xbox one/xbox 360/xbox games on.
It's quite easy. If I don't have any more space, I don't buy any more software : I save money.
And I'll get some joy out of replays
I have a 1TB expansion card for Series games and 2 TB external SSD for XB1 and backward compatibility games. My internal drive is only for apps.
I bought my S for Palworld if that gives you a hint on how long I've had it... It's already full to the brim >.<
People must keep a lot of stuff installed… My PS5 was always full, but I don’t have issues with my Xbox X.
I have a 1TB Seagate card in my Series X and i also have a PS5 with a 1TB M.2 drive and so far i am fine on both as there simply for my play style not been many games to buy and play for me this gen. If Xbox release’s a 2TB digital series X i will get it as i dislike physical media for almost 10 years now for my personal experience. So i would take the extra TB with whatever else small upgrades the box will include and i will get the PS5 Pro and live with that until next gen.
Bought my Series S along with the 1TB expansion card, that way it will last me the entire generation
I have a 1TB Expansion card in my Series X and a 2TB HDD attached as both overflow and storage for Xbox One/BC games I wanna play, while it definitely involves a lot of chopping and changing and isn't by any means the most efficient way of keeping a collection of games, I manage, and that's all you can really do - manage.
I'd like to get a 2TB Expansion Card at some point, but not only is that an expense I could do without, I actually don't know how I'd transfer over the games currently on my 1TB without grabbing and formatting an old external HDD to use as a temporary store for them. The expense and the time investment are both major reasons to, you know, Just Not.
What makes me absolutely mad is that even indie games that are not anyhow demanding are not playable from external SSD due to complying to the X/S optimized certification.
First I bought an 2TB HDD from Seagate for my OG XBox, 360 and One games. But later, I also got the 1TB Western Digital Expansion Card.
With these I'm really fine and don't have the feeling, I need more.
I had been doing OK on my 512 Series S, juggling new games on as I finished and deleted others, but then Starfield came out with a huge storage footprint and my son started getting into rocket league, fall guys and eventually fortnight, which are bigger than what he had been playing, so I broke down and got internal storage expansion on sale, 1 TB. Now I am able to keep a variety of games ready to play and tend to run around 40 to 50 percent full
Space was tight for my 500GB Series S, but I haven’t had any issues since switching to the 1GB Series X. I don’t install a ton of games though, just my regular multiplayer games and the single player game I’m playing at the time.
Just cycle games on and off the hard disk. Very few games are so immediately playable and polished on Series X that I keep them to hand (and they tend to be retro titles like Perfect Dark). Maybe would be an issue if I was more of a online multiplayer gamer and wanted to keep several large games to hand?
I have 8 games installed and my storage is at 96.2% capacity. But I can't justify the price of the storage cards. Almost as much as a Series S!
Storage this generation is a real sore spot for me. I had 3 x 8 Tb drives housing my entire 360 and XBO library. Now I am down to 3 Tb with the expansion card. I want to be able to have tons of storage for all my games and I don't want to always be thinking about the fast vs slow storage available. And now that we are a few years into this gen there just is not enough fast storage available on these devices.
Well I only have a few games downloaded at a time that I plan on playing and rarely if ever fill the storage. People often seem just fill up their storage with games they never get around to playing and then end up deleting them to make room for they next game they wont play.
My expansion card got corrupted. I sent it back to seagate at the end of January and I have yet to get a replacement. I’m BEYOND flipping frustrated. I had to delete games to ge bothers I was in the middle of playing. I also have another external storage, but it held all of my none series x games. This man is pissed and I wanna throw things hahahaha.
Series X here. Storage I’ll had never really been a long term issue that need something external. I generally only have a couple of large titles and the rest are indies. I’ll delete a game when I’m done.
I never bought "xbox series s" , "xbox series x" and "PS5". My first reason was "not enough storage". I'll never buy console with inadequate storage. I always wait for revised versions with bigger drive. Probably, I'll skip to next generation of consoles because inadequate ssd (size) problem never sorted out.
I got one 2 TB (PCI Express 4.0)+ another 1 TB (PCI Express 3.0) ssd in my PC.
Both sony and microsoft wasted too much time to bring solution to inadequate ssd size issue.
I'll look into next generation options.
Why are so many buying a series s along with an expansion instead of the series x for literally a few quid more???
The main reason I have the Series X is for Flight Sim so my issues are kind of self-inflicted 😀.
With the main game, world updates and about £700 of add-ons, it takes up roughly half my storage on it's own.
Just had to remove Halo Infinite to put on Dragon's Dogma 2.
My 2TB card is already almost full. My main annoyance is that Series X/S optimized games are mandatory. I would have been fine with games like Killer Instinct or RE2 and 3 staying with the Xbox One versions just to be able to play them off my external hard drive
Am I out of storage space in 2024? Absolutely.
Are expansion cards too expensive in 2024? ABSOLUTELY!!!
I have a Series X.
Internal storage is 69% full. 244GB remaining.
1TB Storage Expansion Card is 69% full. 285GB remaining.
5TB External Hard Drive 24% full. 3.5 TB remaining.
Basically all of my Series X games are either stored on the Internal Hard Drive or the Expansion Card, for the faster storage.
Most Xbox One games are on the external HDD.
I have a total of 55 games on my library. But I did have a bit of a purge recently, and got rid of a few I no longer played very regularly,
I only really have Halo perma-installed and add/remove anything else as needed.
Just wish my disk based games didn't require an install also.
Mortal Kombat 1 - 170GB No comment 😉
Funny, I recently bought the 2TB SSD. The 1TB from the console just wasn't enough for everyone that uses it at the house.
I have an X, and no external storage as it's too expensive. I'm at around 70-80% most of the time, and cycle out large games to make room for new ones wherever I can. Unfortunately as games are getting bigger and bigger it makes it tough. I've started playing Flight Simulator on Xcloud instead to save space.
I've often used up my series x storage with so many GP games on offer, but I've not bought an upgrade as I feel they are too expensive on this system.
I wish they would have allowed non propriety expansion - I just put 2TB one in my main PS5 for £115 and moved my 1TB ssd to the 2nd PS5 and both have 4TB discs for PS4 games.
Ideally I'd like a 2TB expansion for the Series X but, according to google 'The best price for Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X/S 2TB right now is £269.40.' That's just a rip off.
Series S and 1TB HDD I'm struggling but i remove what I'm not playing at the moment which hurts bc I have weak internet download speeds, I generally keep a bit of storage free on the HDD and move the games around when I'm playing X|S optimized games and others are "in the plan but not yet but also I don't feel like downloading them again". For the ones that are X|S optimized but can be run off the HDD (like Halo MCC and AC Odyssey) I just play em on the HDD and suffer thru the loading times. Maybe my standards are just low
Horrible but we've gotten used to it. Usually only have 3 or 4 games installed at a time, thankful cloud streaming works so well!
I had to get a storage I like the forza games and had call of duty free when I got my Xbox and they take up more than half the storage. I like to have a few games installed as I never know what I feel like playing day to day.
I got annoyed at feeling like I had to 'plan' everything so I bought a 1TB expansion card for my Series X a couple of years ago. No regrets as I'm able to keep some large multiplayer games installed (Forza, COD, Halo Infinite, MCC) while also being able to spontaneously download whatever I want from Game Pass.
Proprietary storage was a big mistake in my opinion though. I haven't seen anything that justifies it in my opinion.
I personally have my Series X maxed on space and am constantly moving things around to accommodate new stuff. I currently also have a 2TB expansion card and a 2TB external drive and rarely have more than a few gigs free on the external drive. I still have a few games I keep installed on my old XB-One just to free up space on the SX.
Ain't ever paying the ridiculous amounts they ask for the expansion cards
