Well, Microsoft delivered the news this week that its big Fable reboot has been delayed - and before this recent turn of events, the Xbox RPG was probably the team's biggest release planned for late 2025. However, even with this delay, Xbox still has some major games planned for this year including South of Midnight and DOOM: The Dark Ages - the question is, what replaces Fable later in the year?
Admittedly, our first thought goes to Call of Duty, to be honest. Even with GTA 6 potentially still on the cards for a 2025 launch, it seems unlikely COD will get delayed - the series releases like clockwork every single year and is basically guaranteed to sell even with a new Rockstar game on the horizon.
Having said that, if we gloss over Call of Duty for a moment, there's still a decent chance that Xbox wants another one of its internal studios to deliver a big game this year. Will it be Gears of War: E-Day? What about the well-reported Oblivion remake or perhaps something like State of Decay 3 or Clockwork Revolution? There are lots of different places Microsoft could pull from here.
Of course, one other title that's already penned to come out in 2025 is The Outer Worlds 2. Obsidian's next big RPG following this month's Avowed is well on the way, and with how prolific this team is, we have no reason to doubt it can't deliver on TOW2 as well. Maybe, just maybe, The Outer Worlds 2 and a new COD game will be enough for Microsoft's lineup later this year.
Our guide up above details every single Xbox first-party developer and what they're working on - so, feel free to refresh your memory on that and then comment down below and tell us which game you think replaces Fable in Fall 2025. Options, options, options folks!
Tell us which big Xbox game you think launches later this year down below.

I’m guessing it’ll just be OW2 and CoD, and maybe the Oblivion remake. Which is still very solid! Those other games we’ve seen little to nothing from, i really doubt they’d suddenly be releasing this year
I think June onwards for 2025 would be something like:
I figure November and December will be left empty because of GTA6.
There’s also Ninja Gaiden 4 coming out in the fall as well
I love your optimism, @Grumblevolcano! 🤣
If I was to guess, either the Oblivion remake, or the Marcus Fenix Trilogy will shadow-drop during the June Showcase. If I had to stake a bet, I'd probably opt for Oblivion...
Definitely no e-day this year. As fiendish beaver said multiple times its a launch title for xbox prime in 2026.
Jokes aside I will take gears 2-3 remake/remaster any day or night.
Even if there is nothing then cod and ow2 will be enough for me
We have seen quite a bit of clockwork revolution so there has to be a chance of that?
I think we will only find out more once GTA has a date/delay.
I doubt they fill it with anything additional. I think outer worlds 2 was the one they slotted into Fable's spot already. Oblivion might make it this year but I don't expect it to be a serious remake effort so probably wont be a major deal when it releases.
Still a ridiculously strong year for xbox releases.
I think CoD. I think that's possibly one of the very few games that wouldn't be hurt too much by GTA. Either way, from Q1-Q4, the year is stacked - and we ain't even at the summer showcase yet.
Probably nothing slotted in there realistically other than COD … maybe a surprise around Xmas with something big…
Call of Duty is the 'obvious' release as that has annually released now for decades in Q4. Along with Avowed, Doom and South of Midnight, there is the 'minimum' 4 (or 1 a quarter) games for the year - not including any other releases from their partners.
Contraband, State of Decay 3 and Everwild were announced quite some time ago. Outer Wilds 2 or even Perfect Dark could be further along than we expect too but I don't think they need to 'rush' as it seems they not only have enough games to meet their quoted '1 a quarter', but will also release more games on Playstation than Sony that will bring in revenue - a lot of releases this year across all platforms!
I hope it’s Oblivion. THPS, Outer Worlds, Oblivion, and CoD is a decent line-up.
PLEASE PLEASE be Gears of War Marcus Fenix Collection!
Not Xbox but if silksong drops happy days 😎
COD is always there to fill the major Fall release date now, & in the face of GTA6 (supposedly) also releasing in that October-November time frame there may genuinely be no point in having anything else from the 1st party studios around that time.
@HonestHick we’ve been waiting for so long now , i’ve tapped out 😂😭
The Outer Worlds 2
I am kinda glad Assassin’s Creed got delayed to this year now. Pokemon Z-A is probably gonna be my holiday game at this point. Too early to tell though.
@nomither6 if i had any good sense i would tap out too. I just want the first 3 games in unreal engine 5 so bad i keep the hope up every year. I will say if it’s not at this year June show case alongside E-day then i don’t think the collection is coming.
But it makes so much sense to have a collection. Why would anyone on PS5 or PC want to play E-day when they don’t even have most of the story on PC and none of it on PS. So i mean the need of the collection is there. But pretty soon i will tap out with you brother haha
I hope they just raise the prices and push big titles out so we can fund them while they seek PC and other console audiences. The delay had better not be because they want to ship it on PS5 day one 😭 I am switching to Gamepass Core once my GPU is up in November . I wish we could turn off all the GPU ads they hit you with at lower tiers.
I am a massive Fable fan so want them to take their time for the right reasons. Just sucks for long term subs not getting it in the window they purchased.
The five studios left in the Xbox One era - 343 Industries, Turn 10, Rare ltd, The Coalition, and Mojang - appear to be mostly non-functional except for Mojang.
Only the acquired studios are functioning.
