Earlier today we spotted some neat-looking console wraps for Xbox Series S, and that got us thinking about the future of limited edition consoles from Microsoft. Sure, these Series S wraps are totally unofficial, but Microsoft's Series X ones are official - and their very existence could spell the end for limited edition consoles this generation.
About a year ago, way before Xbox's console wraps were a thing, we ranted about how much we wanted to see the next 'LE' console - after all, it'd been around a year since the last one back then. Now though, we're not even sure we'll ever see another one, at least for the current generation.
Microsoft's reasoning for console wraps existing was because it deemed them "more affordable and more sustainable than purchasing a special edition or limited edition console", which we totally understand. It's very cool for owners of the standard Series X to be able to upgrade with the purchase of one of these - especially if we keep seeing cool game-themed wraps like the Starfield edition.
And yet, we still miss limited edition consoles. The Halo Infinite system was an absolute beauty, not to mention the LE consoles from generations gone by. We love the 'Pomp and Circumstance' that comes along when a brand-new special edition console launches.
Having said that, we just don't think it'll happen again this generation. Console wraps seem to be Microsoft's solution this time around, and that solution could spell the end of these amazing custom consoles for the time being.
But, what do you think? Reckon Xbox will still drop another LE Series X one day? Vote in the poll below and discuss further in the comments!
Will Xbox Release Another Limited Edition Series X? (232 votes)
- Nope, console wraps are the new 'LE' option!
- I don't think so, unless console wraps are discontinued
- I think they'll release another one for a HUGE first-party game
- Yeah, they definitely will - the Halo Infinite console can't be the only one!

It is super lame we don't get more.
I remember back in the OG Xbox DAYS I had the standard, Mountain Dew, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and the Halo Xbox.
Then in the 360 gen had the regular, Halo Edition, and Gears of war edition. Decided less interested though thanks to the swappable Faceplates.
After that though they kinda just tapered off. I miss general release special editions.
Then again, nowadays, they'd all get scalped the second they went to preorder because of online sales.
I think they'll save it for the new model about to be announced at The Game Awards.
I like the concept of the wrap, personally. It's WAY cheaper than getting a whole new console, you can have multiple, and I really wouldn't even bother getting a newer special edition if i already own the console. Simply too expensive.
Then again, i don't look at my console anyway when I'm gaming and i prefer to have one that blends in with the entertainment center so it isn't that big of a deal.
Still, I like the wraps and would love potentially a Hi-Fi rush one.
I am not sure if we need these special editions of Xbox anymore. Xbox is already so special and perfect that it is hard not to marvel at the sight of the console. I understand that the other console companies need to try these kind of cheap tricks to lure people in to buy their so-so product. Anyone who sees Xbox knows that they are getting extreme cutting edge product.
I bought the Halo console, because you know, it’s Halo, but from now on I would assume that there will be wraps released. I think this would be the logical way forward, similarly to what PlayStation does with the shells, it would just make sense that people could make a console look like a game that they were invested in without going and having to spend full price for a new console (which I did 6 times last gen).
One thing is for sure, there will be limited edition controllers lol. I think they will do another limited edition console at some point. Definitely some for giveaways but probably some for sale too.
I would guess major anniversary dates could be possibilities. Fable is 20 years old next year, Gears will be 20 years in 26.
I'm curious how well the wraps are selling.
Internet scalpers have really ruined the concept of limited edition consoles. The last limited edition console I got was the Halo 4 Xbox 360 slim. Not exactly pre-internet but it was something you could go to your local GAME and pick up.
Maybe I'm just salty because Xbox Series X|S launched during COVID when scalpers were at an all time high.
Honestly hope not, as others have pointed out the scalper market has destroyed it for many people. I've been lucky enough to get the limited edition console/controllers I've wanted but so many real fans have missed out. I like the concept of wraps & plates on PS5 more overall.
I want them to release an Xbox series X elite edition
They did release a bluey series x and loads others according to this site so I don't get the story here?
I really like my shiny Starfield wrap. It's really high quality and looks gorgeous. I think it's a nice alternative.
