Polish developer CD Projekt Red was held in incredibly high regard after the successful launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, an all-encompassing sequel that masterfully built on the first two games in the RPG series. The team's trajectory meant that hype was at an all-time high for Cyberpunk 2077's launch, a launch that didn't exactly go to plan in the end.
The game broadly failed to meet expectations on release, especially the console version, and it took months (and arguably a next-gen update) to sort things out. Almost two years later, as we begin to approach Cyberpunk 2077's first expansion, the game is in a much better state. But, has the whole debacle hurt our chances of getting a sequel?
For now, the team is moving on to The Witcher 4 as its next big project, or as they like to call it, a "new Witcher saga". After everything that's happened with Cyberpunk 2077, the studio has no doubt taken a reputational hit, and we'd be surprised to see them rush this upcoming Witcher title. Still, we're already left wondering about what's to come after The Witcher 4, and whether this team will ever return to the world of Cyberpunk.
It was thought that the two series could potentially alternate, much like Rockstar has done in recent years with Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. This idea still seems plausible given that interest levels in Cyberpunk 2077 remain high, but the question is, would it be worth revisiting a series that hurt the team's reputation as Cyberpunk appeared to? We're not so sure.
For now, we still have plenty of Cyberpunk 2077 to come and go. As we mentioned, a major expansion is in the works, along with a few gameplay overhauls in the pipeline now that the team has all-but ditched the last-gen versions of the game. Once the sun has set on Cyberpunk 2077 updates, and the upcoming Witcher 4 is out of the door, we'll be keen to learn what's next for CDPR and if the team will go 'back to the future' for more Cyberpunk.
But, what do you think will happen to the series? Will we see at least one more mainline entry? Vote in the poll and let us know!

Don't think so. Way too much hate for the original one. My guess is they'll go for Witcher 4,5 and 6 because it's safe. Unless they mess up Witcher 4. Then they will probably become the next Bioware.
Well what’s happening with cyberpunk multiplayer now? Maybe more chance of that will coming as a stand alone thing after Witcher 4 hits
Forget making "another one". Rather see them do the one they did properly this time around.
One trouble with series alternating is that development time is now so long for these behemoth AAA games. It's why we haven't seen a new GTA in almost 9 years and 3 generations. That doesn't work well for an ongoing series. It's why Sony Santa Monica have, rightly in my view, made God of War a duology instead of a trilogy.
No one wants to wait 6+ years for the next part or 10+ years to complete a story.
They've been pretty consistent on being a two franchise studio, they expanded their staff and switched to Unreal to accomplish it.
Yes, Cyberpunk had a very rough launch but I also remember them having to completely overhaul Witcher 1, so its seems very much in keeping with the studios history
Personally, I think it speaks volumes that 2077 will only be getting the one major expansion. I don't think CDPR wants to linger on this game/franchise for any longer than it has to. Their pride and reputation both took a major hit.
Honestly sales figures for CP 2077 were strong and CDPR recouped their costs. The impact the game had releasing in a broken state wouldn't have been that big of an issue if it weren't coupled with the fact that they were revealed to have gnarly crunch expectations. With that being said, aside from the expansion coming out, we also have the Edgerunners anime being produced by Studio Trigger, so I seriously doubt this is the last we see of Cyberpunk; though it's possible that CDPR wouldn't make the next game nor the scope may not be as large. I personally think Rocksteady should pivot from DC and make something in this space.
They should make another one. It is a cool world. I enjoyed my time with cyberpunk.
Forget the cyberpunk fiasco red dead where is the nest gen upgrade of Witcher 3?
Man the hate is real for what is essentially a excellent game. If they are given the hardware and time to make it the right way why wouldn't you want another one? Im sorry I've been a gamer my whole life my first console was a Sega Master System. Point is I've played a LOT of games in a LOT of generes and generations and to flat out hate Cyberpunk is just being to harsh. I played on XBSX and PC at launch and had no crahing bugs ect. The world and concept of the game is undeniable especially in the it's current state. I just realized yesterday that i have a 188 hours in the game and havent even finished the story or half the gigs. So I played to understand how and i just find myself driving around the world. I would love to see this game/CP2 on Unreal 5 and exclusive to hardware that can run it. They really have something special with the IP it just needs more of the promises. Such as filler/NPC roaming the city more cloths, weapons and builds. I cant grasp why in this future i cant wield a gun and mantis blade/melee if i so choose. Little things could set this beast apart in a huge way with a gun/melee/quickhack combo. Good bones here as someone said already and the game has followers as is. So i pray I get to see a sequel and this cancel culture crap is for children and self entitled ppl sorry not sorry. Stop comparing it to Witcher thats why developers don't make anything new anymore its you all holding them back. Its not the Witcher never was the Witcher. Yes im aware of the launch and all the issues it had but thats not my point so don't make a rebuttal about that. I never NOT see multiple comments that mention Witcher when it comes to this game.
Unpopular opinion : i didnt play the game till the large update fix this year so take that in account....
Its one of the best games i played last 3 loved the story the characters the huge world the diversity in fashion style its very to see an npc twice but what i liked more is the huge rpg elements and how it affect the playing style! I love it and got attached to it
I actually played this game on my PC, since I didn't have a console yet. It was one of those "PC master race" moments, when I saw all those bugs and loading times on consoles. I remember the most annoying stuff for me were the cops spawning in the weirdest places, but other than that, I had a great time with the game.
Don't let other people say what you should like. Bugs aside, the gameplay, world and story were excellent and I wouldn't mind a visit in another cybercity.
I seriously doubt it. It's pretty obvious they didn't care at much about it as The Witcher and only saw it as a cash grab. Hopefully Mike Pondsmith can partner with a different studio for any future games set in that world. Id love to see Obsidian get a shot with the IP.
They should make another cyberpunk but with honest marketing and not BS like in the first games. Let youtubers play with the game demo, then 1-2 month before release date, put the demo on pc and console so gamers can play and see for themselves is the game is good or not.
And do not release it before it's ready.
@Bleachedsmiles I am pretty sure they already said the multiplayer is cancelled.
I can see it coming but probably not as their next project in line. Underneath the bugs and shady marketing cyberpunk is a very good game (altough not to the extent of wild hunt)
@Balta666 That’s a shame if it is. That could have been interesting
@Bleachedsmiles actually I checked after and it appears they never said in all words but that they scrapped development on engine red (their own) and were totally moving to unreal which let many to speculate about what that means to the MP version. Don't know but I wouldn't expect it and if it comes it will be a nice surprise (hopefully)
@Balta666 That’s why I was thinking we could end up seeing that now as a stand-alone after the Witcher 4. I can’t see them doing a traditional sequel to this…but then years from now they’ll probably be more appetite for another cyberpunk as it still has plenty of potential
@Bleachedsmiles bearing in mind their fall from grace due to the disaster launch I don't ser them going for a multiplayer with added monetization
After the two recent updates, I guess even more people on PC and XBS/X would give this another try. The inclusion of REDMods for PC helps. CDPR is more mod-friendlier than Rockstar.
I held off until after I got an XBX, and its a good fun game underneath all the bugs.
I guess, CDPR would make another Cyberpunk game, but it could be along time down the track.
