It feels like the topic of the week has been centered around whether Steam will be coming to the next Xbox console, and although it's probably going to be ages until we know either way, it's still a fun thing to discuss!
Personally, I've got quite a few games in my Steam library that would be a great fit for my Xbox console, although some would definitely require a mouse and keyboard too. Football Manager 2024 comes to mind, for example, as does a big MMO like Star Wars: The Old Republic - the possibilities are endless really. Just looking at the "Top Sellers" list on Steam right now, games like R.E.P.O. and Wreckfest 2 aren't on Xbox at all yet, so Steam integration would allow us to access these titles much earlier than we can today.
I think the modding possibilities are really exciting with something like this as well. eFootball PES 2021 is a game that I own across both Xbox and PC, but it's the latter version that gets all my attention because of the mods. Some Xbox games have mods that work really well, but opening things up to the Steam Workshop and beyond would be incredible!
Of course, the other part that would make Steam so useful to Xbox players — and it's possibly a reason why it won't happen after all — is that it would provide more opportunities to get games at lower prices. The Microsoft Store would suddenly be in competition with Steam, the Epic Games Store and everything else, which feels a little counter-intuitive.
Who knows, though? It's hard to know what Microsoft is thinking at this point, and the leaked image that showed a Steam tab next to a bunch of devices including two Xbox consoles was always bound to get everyone's hopes up.
It's probably nothing... but if Steam was to come to Xbox, which games would you want to play on there?

Would it not just be the whole Steam storefront? Through the app? An interesting discussion point that a few have bought up here is price competition when in it comes to Steam Vs Xbox stores.
All the ones I have gotten at a ridiculous discount either on steam sales, cd keys, humble bundles, etc.
For the stink people make about the cost of PCs upfront, not enough people mention how cheap the actual games can be. Just signing up for a free Epic account has gotten me a library of over 500 games, many of which are very good AAA games.
Easy football manager
None. If I wanted to play Steam games I'd play on a PC. I buy and play consoles for a reason.
I still don’t quite understand their play here. Is the Steam integration the only thing that is supposed to save Xbox? Is this their trump card? Are there even any notable games on Steam that aren’t available on console? Football Manager hardly gets me excited.
I’ll say it again, they can do whatever Steam integration they want, but if they want to sell Xboxs, they need to have exclusive games. Exclusives sell consoles
@LogicStrikesAgain I mean, you'll be able to play key PlayStation games without buying a PlayStation.
It's also another step towards a hardware agnostic future. Which is where, I believe, the industry needs to head.
@SMJ - Was just going to say i'd find it funny to play Spiderman, Horizon, Last of Us, God of War, etc on an Xbox device that supports Steam games.
Returnal returnal returnal...
Xbox being part Steam machine would go pretty hard actually.
@Dalamar73 Never used it mate. I literally use it (with no account) to read reviews for games that come to Xbox from there - because the store reviews on Xbox are always about someone's nan...
I'm confused as to who has the say about how much of Steam would come to Xbox. Surely that's a Steam choice? But then, why would Steam want less revenue? It's also not going to be a developer / publisher choice, because Steam is Steam and if you're releasing your game there then it'l be universal, right?
@ThatOneSneak You evolved your Eevee wrong. You should have used a Thunder Stone.
P.S. I totally agree. I think the next Xbox is going to be flamin' epic and turn a lot of heads.
@Dalamar73 I'm sure they would. However, I also believe that there will be a PS6 and next Xbox and then that will be it for bespoke home consoles.
We will have the equivalent of what Microsoft are doing with the next Xbox - a user friendly PC in a console shell under your TV.
Once that happens, all store fronts will be available to buy and download from. This final Xbox is just a bridge to that future.
@Dalamar73 I disagree. I think more choice and less barriers is a good thing, and I firmly believe that the next Xbox is going to be a head turner. I think expectations are lower than what they should be, based on what we know so far, next gen Xbox is going to be outstanding. I think MS are two steps behind on hardware sales, but ten steps ahead in prepping for a future that all will be leaning in on.
If all the half life games are on it that's definitely what I'd go for!! Are there any playstation games available on steam??
I'd definitely play some ps exclusives if they where there especially drakes uncharted and Bloodborne.
I might just buy a PS4 for them games in the summer but my misses thinks it would be weird for a guy my age to have two consoles 🤷 maybe I can change her mind 🤗
@SMJ I don't know man, maybe you’re right. But having exclusives is basically Sony’s modus operandi and the reason they sell consoles. I have the feeling they would step in if all their games could be played on a Xbox. Because that would indeed be disastrous for Playstation
@Dalamar73 Maybe your not the audience for the machine so when it comes out 🤗
It's all good I'm sure there are many out there who will be interested enough to purchase it and life will move on as it's meant to🤔🥱🤗
Will be all very interesting if the new Xbox is a plug and play PC with steam etc.
Especially if by then all Xbox published games are day one on other consoles.
I can’t see who this new device is for, ok the must haves and a few more but not even a 20 million total sales worldwide device.
So all the games are already on steam. Cheaper than Xbox. With a well built user base.
Majority of games by 27 will be on switch2/ps.
So who exactly, outside of current Xbox users are going to be that interested?
Obviously on a publisher/software side of thing they are in a good place.
But hardware is showing to be another story. It’s not even like there is a big user base to lean on.
Personally I can’t see how it will have steam, run the games anywhere near equivalent to a PC version. Or be at an affordable price.
@LogicStrikesAgain I'm sure they'd try to do something but it's difficult to see what that would be if the games are available on Steam.
@Dalamar73 I mean that's totally up to you but at the very least, it has you here, right now, on an Xbox site, discussing it.
My point is, accessibility is always going to be a major selling factor for any brand. If you can nail that and cover other bases, it's win win.
We already know Xbox has handheld, new hardware, and new controllers on the way - on top of an increasingly impressive game output (so much so they have to delay their own games to make space for others).
Mix it all in with what we know so far about what they're working on and you never know, it may even surprise and entice you, who've already made up their mind.
I still really don't see this happening. It just doesn't seem like something Valve would be interested in doing at all.
All of them. Literally all of them. Steam is pretty much always cheaper. Steam has no online multiplayer paywall. Steam has vastly superior profile customisation and community features. Once Xbox allows Steam there is simply no longer any reason to buy games from the Microsoft Store whatsoever, aside from when taking advantage of Microsoft Rewards points (if that scheme still exists in 2027). It’s really that simple, Microsoft Store can’t hold a candle to Steam.
So many expect some kind of Utopia with the Prime. So many will be so very, very disappointed...
@Dalamar73 Oh I mean yeah when we go that far off the beaten track then I can agree. That will never happen, but this started off with chatter about simple Steam support lol. To that end, I say let's wait and see. I can't see them implementing it and it not being fairly vast out the gate.
@Fiendish-Beaver Did you say utopia? 🥹
SteamVR games would be great, although I'm not confident about Microsoft supporting VR headset functionality on their Xbox-Windows-Steam platform, at least natively.
I don't have anything in particular, but given the way PS does exclusivity deals where the games come to PC as well as PS, if this could circumvent that then that opens up a lot of future potential.
Obviously execution is all important but in theory I'd be up for this set up with a Switch 2 rather than a PS6.
Unreal Tournament 2004, Emulation Station 😺
I haven’t used Steam in like 20 years because I play on console, but I’d happily replay the Half Life games and Deus Ex. Realistically anything new I’d want usually comes to consoles though!
That said, I’d love to play modded games like Fallout: London.
So many games that I see people playing. Quirky new ip that’s trending I would like to get hold of and play but always on steam. So really excited if this happens
euro truck simulator 2 or american truck simulator already have the wheel setup ready to go
Gary’s Mod for me
Will any of them actually work fully and properly without the devs needing to modify them first for the new fixed-hybrid-PC-Xbox-hardware?
It goes without saying that PlayStation wouldn't let a single PlayStation Steam game be played on Xbox, I don't know why people here are even entertaining the conversation.
If there's one thing certain in life is that Sony hates Microsoft and would never give them a inch 😅 they probably cry every time they have to make the baseball game.
@Dalamar73 an open console pc hybrid might not tempt you out of PC gaming, but the vast VAST majority of PC gamers are not playing on high end systems. You give someone a £/$700 device that can upgrade them whilst playing on monitor or TV, remove the online paywall and stop them having to scrap for overpriced GPUs or other components and you've opened up a compelling market.
Don't get me wrong, it's not gonna move the needle for someone rocking a 4090 setup but those 20 series Nvidia users, those 4060 guys? Done right it's basically a hassle free upgrade.
Dave the Diver and Pacific Drive would be my first go to games. But I'd still prefer an actual Xbox release.
Hades 2
Many other indies, but the big one would be Hades 2 early access
@M20B25 I just rolled credits on Dave the Diver on switch last week. Such a fun game. Really hope it comes to xbox soon, with all the odd dlc and cross overs. It would be a fantastic game pass addition. Playable steam version on xbox would be nice
Having to renegotiate royalties with every single publisher on Steam sounds like a gargantuan hassle.
@Dalamar73 I think you are kind of grouping all PC players into a fairly small bucket.
If Microsoft can make a console that plays PC games - even at just "console settings" - and can be affordable, it would be a huge draw for:
Sure, the hardcore, emulation using, hardware updating, DRM-fighting PC gamers are probably not going to be swayed into a lower-spec machine that is more designed around couch play - they will continue to pay the premium price for the premium experience.
But the more budget-conscious PC gamers may see merit in what this accomplishes - especially if it has a great price to performance ratio.
The truth of the matter is, Microsoft can't "out console" PlayStation. They've tried for 2 generations now (well I guess 3 if you count OG Xbox, too) and the gap between Xbox and PlayStation continues to grow more and more in Sony's favor.
Microsoft HAS to take a different lane.
Microsoft can "out PC" Sony, though! And this potential future actually expands the market rather than continues courting the same people - who are very much jumping to PlayStation at the moment.
...F.E.A.R.
I still think everyone is expecting too much from this Steam-Xbox thing though.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Dalamar73 Might be a feature of a console/PC hybrid though. Depends on how PC the console would be.
@GamingFan4Lyf I just don’t really see the difference between Xbox making a “PC like” console, if it still has a fixed set of specs they will need to develop for, compared to a regular console also with a fixed set of specs you need to develop for.
People will still want to buy a PS6 for their exclusives, and if Xbox keeps porting their games to PS, who is this targeted towards?
It’s honestly really vague to me what they are trying to accomplish here, but if true, it really looks like they are just building a console for Valve. Because who would still continue to buy games from the Xbox store if Steam is available on it? It’ll effectively just be a new Steam console
All I want is BeamNG.drive on Xbox
@Dalamar73 yeah I'm really nervous about what they do with online paywalls, it'd make sense for me that they scrap it for new hardware but keep it in place for series consoles. Sort of a go big or go home scenario. Obviously you'd expect the UI to be littered with game pass ultimate ads too.
That's what I mean when I say "done right", because done as a greedy upgrade just won't sell. You're dead right to be skeptical though, I'm feeling the same way, but remembering that it's my money and I can move to PS6 or PC if I want
@Dalamar73 Very true on all fronts. As of right now, I can’t figure out a plan Xbox has that would include consoles as a 10 year goal to continue unless technology dramatically slows down. I’m not sure how financially Xbox could justify two more generations without there being a dramatic shift, given how sales have been trending the last two generations.
UBOAT, Endless Space 2 and a lot of other strategy games that rarely leave the PC (Old World, Terra Invicta, etc.)
@LogicStrikesAgain I know to many people who bought a PS5 to play CoD, NBA 2k, Madden, Fortnite. So no, exclusives are not the only selling point. But to your point the square enix exclusivity deal is what made my other friends get a PS5.
@Seioni Sure, but i disagree that those games are the reason they chose Playstation, because those are available as well on Xbox. They could have easily bought a Xbox to play their Fortnite and CoD right? And yet they didn’t.
Most people are overwhelmingly choosing Playstation because of their reputation of delivering high class exclusives, and since Xbox started porting their games last year, you now have acces to both Sony’s exclusives and Xbox games.
It’s similar to the tv streaming world. Even if you only watch a couple of shows, you still have to pick a subscription. For example, why would you subscribe to Netflix if every show they make comes to Disney+. You’d just subscribe to Disney+, that way you have acces to Disneys catalogue and Netflix’s.
Look, i may be wrong. But the way i see it, one way to entice people to buy their next gen console is to offer good exclusives games.
Edit: However, i will say you’re right that exclusives aren’t the only reason. Some people consider Playstation out of convenience, as it might be more readily available in some regions of the world, some (especially younger people) will look at what their peers have and some are just loyal to the brand or have built up too big of a collection in their ecosystem to switch to something else
I think many want Steam because its a great store.
However, I actually realized aside from PS exclusives (that you can play on ps5 instead and day 1) there are not many games on steam that would be a good experience on console. Many are purely PC games designed for MKB, especially the older games.
So the better spot for this xbox with steam hybrid is near your monitor on the desk…meaning you can just buy PC.
@Dalamar73 exactly. Most people dont care. Its not an argument for average gamer to buy xbox with steam
@LogicStrikesAgain i think aggressive marketing against the console by MS themselves as well as not restocking xboxes do way more damage than exclusives porting. Average person convinced anyways that “xbox does not have games” already
@Millionski I don’t think stock issues are the problem rather a consequence of no one buying a Xbox. But i do agree with the marketing, that has definitely not helped.
Ironically Xbox, by acquiring two of the biggest publishers, now does have a lot of games. But they (understandably) decided to go multiplatform. And i don’t know if they can go back from this decision next gen
@LogicStrikesAgain Well there is no extra version to develop. Developers can test the PC version against the Xbox hardware and even have Xbox presets for the games (but still allow those who want to tweak to do so).
It essentially eliminates the whole “not worth porting to Xbox” problem since testing a PC build against a fixed hardware set is a lot easier than dealing with a whole separate version that may or may not get sales.
@GamingFan4Lyf Yeah, that sounds good, you may be right! But i think they would still need to optimize it for it to run in a way that they would want it to run. For example, to run at 60fps with a certain fidelity on that hardware configuration they would still have to develop the game specifically around that set of specs in mind.
I’m far from an expert on this, so i may be talking nonsense here. Honestly this whole thing is still so vague, i don’t know what to think of it. I will reserve further judgement until i know more of their plans
@LogicStrikesAgain Think like how developers get Steam Deck verified only for a full-fat PC hardware.
So it would be “Xbox PC Verified”
@GamingFan4Lyf Hmm, i’m not that familiar with it actually. I thought games needed to be tweaked a lot to work well on a SteamDeck. So some games are verified so that they automatically work well on a SteamDeck, is that correct? That does sound good. I dunno, that may work.
My question would be how they would sell their games. Because if they do sell it through Steam, then how is this still a Xbox rather than a Steam console. I just can’t see it clearly now, but hopefully when we get more info on everything it’ll be more clear
Total War and Old World
@SMJ not on Xbox. Not that I care either way. Done with consoles. Series X is my last one.
@Fiendish-Beaver why!!! Xbox is heading into a digital only future. Which if it carries on it's current strategy would make it a gatekeeper under the EU's Digital Markets Act.
Microsoft allowing Steam, GoG, Epic & others on the next gen hybrid Xbox device would follow a key law that states that gatekeepers treat third-party services in a “transparent, fair, and non-discriminatory” way.
Sorry, @cragis0001, but you've completely lost me!
My point is, that many people think that Microsoft will allow all the companies that you mention on to their next console. I don't think they will allow it as to do so will see them lose billions in lost revenue due to games being available more cheaply on the likes of the sites that you mention. Thus, all those that believe that Microsoft will include other store fronts, such as Steam, are likely to be exceptionally disappointed.
We may both be saying the same thing (or at least thinking it), but like I say, you lost me... 😂
The only obvious ones are God of War and The Last of Us games.
Maybe Sackboy.
@Dalamar73 @LogicStrikesAgain I am with you guys in that I just cannot see how this next device will incorporate steam with full compatability unless its just a 100% pure PC. If that is the case then you will just end up paying more long term, and if its a hybrid device then its not suddenly going to gain access to this mythical trove of 10,000 games.
As for PS games they will find a way to block it out if they need to and it likely will not even be that hard. The only way the allow it is if MS goes pure PC because at that point they are basically out of the game anyway.
I still think the steam screenshot was just a mockup for the new MS Ally UI and nothing more than that.
All games is the right answer because they would all have better sales than Xbox
@Fiendish-Beaver I get your point 100%. Plus your also correct. As it's probably one that Microsoft would gladly like to follow. As like you said before. It makes little sense to allow Steam available on Xbox. But unfortunately if the next gen hybrid is more PC than console. Then it's likely to be a digital only platform. So Microsoft is being forced to allow Steam, Epic, GoG etc on Xbox. As you just have to look at the recent lawsuits against PlayStation for ripping off UK PS store customers. Another lawsuit against PlayStation. Is for not allowing digital game sales outside of the PS store. Then you have Apple & Google being forced to open up their walled gardens by new tougher anti consumer laws like the Digital Markets Act in the EU.
Phil Spencer first mentioned steam just days after Microsoft themselves got named as one of the 6 Gatekeepers being investigated by the EU's Digital Markets Act.
