It's been a crazy week of rumours and speculation about not only the third-party 2025 Xbox handheld, but also the next Xbox console and first-party handheld that are apparently arriving in 2027 - if the timeline doesn't shift again.
The 2025 Xbox handheld will probably have a name that resembles something along the lines of an ASUS ROG Ally — we're not expecting too much of a deviation for a third-party system — but Microsoft has a tricky task on its hands for naming both the new Xbox console and the 2027 handheld... especially if they both launch at the same time.
This is just my opinion here, but I don't think they've named a console very well since the Xbox 360! The Xbox One made sense on paper but perhaps just got tainted by all the mess that happened back at launch, while the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S felt too confusing after having the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X just a few years prior.
Whatever happens with the new console (or consoles), I'm just desperate to see Microsoft ditch the whole "X" and "S" thing for the next generation. If this is to be a more Windows-like system as speculated, it makes sense to differentiate in a big way by going with something totally unfamiliar - I don't care what it is, just make it stand out!
Ben, our staff writer here at Pure Xbox, said to me recently that he'd call the console "Xbox Home" and the handheld "Xbox Portable", which seems to make sense to me! it might be a bit on the nose, but it would (hopefully) get rid of any confusion about which system to buy compared to the likes of the One S, One X, Series S and Series X.
Anyway, nothing's official yet and most of what we're talking about here is just based on reports and speculation, so who knows what the future holds? It's fun to talk about though - we're really keen to hear what you think the next Xbox console and the 2027 Xbox handheld (and the 2025 handheld if you wish) should be called when they arrive.
Go on then, what are your name choices for these Xbox devices? Tell us in the comments below.

If it’s hand held…. Just call it the Xbox handheld
Do away with confusing names. Keep it simple. And let everyone know it’s an Xbox.
Xbox (2027)
Xbox Portable (2027)
Xbox Portable would probably be seen as too close to sonys name but I like the sound of referring to it as the XP. Xbox Series P or Xbox Series H are okay. Boring names but I think that's the move here. They are probably going to have a wide range of devices soon and the Series would probably be the best way to differentiate them.
Of course everyone is going to come here with some stupid and immature examples like S*xBox, TripleX box, Xbox series Y, XOBX, Xbox: The Freshmaker, Xbox Xtra S, Series X the Boxilicious, XboxStation, PlayBox, Xbox series Switch, I can’t believe it’s not an Xbox, PCBox, XROG Ally X, The Fresh Box of X Air, CloudBox, Xbox: The Series
But not me, i won’t stoop to that level
Something easy and not confusing.
Playstation really nailed the naming.
I don't really know, my naming convention would likely be worse than Microsoft's, a very low bar😉. OK, how about Windows Handheld PC (HPC), I'll see myself out😁.
Xbox PS (Portable Series), stick it to the man.
Xbox PC (Personal Console) for the main. Screw it, use the popularity against them 🤣
Series Y and Series Z. Keep it simple, but non numbered.(letters > numbers)
@Lup I hate playstations naming. Its dull and unimaginative. Basically one step worse than ea sports naming
Xbox
Xbox Mini
Xbox Range H and Xbox Range P
Continue the streak of consumer confusion.
@Runex2121 Got to disagree, Sony have the naming nailed down. At least most people can say what the latest console name is. 😂 Also PS5 / PS5 Pro is easier to understand than xbox series X/S. I was asked by a non gaming friend who was looking to get a console if the Xbox one or Xbox series was the latest. People that are into gaming know, but those casual ones that are not have no clue.
@Coletrain I'd vote for these names.
XxxXBoXxxX Twin XxX
XxxXBoXxxX Twin XxX Handy XxX One xx
Alternatively PS6 because everything is apparently an Xbox these days.
@LogicStrikesAgain You forgot the XBox U!
@Runex2121
Hate it all you want, but even a mom/dad who never played a videogame knows that PS5 came after the PS4.
This is an Xbox
It should be Xbox ‘randomizer word’ X and Xbox ‘randomizer word’ S to keep it aligned with previous names
XboxTwo - Console
XboxToo - Portable
Portable - Xbox 2G
Console - Xbox Linked
First of all I would establish: 1-Xbox OG/ 2-Xbox 360/ 3-Xbox One/ 4-Xbox One X|S/ 5-Xbox Series X|S
Then I would call the next generation XBOX 6 and XBOX Portable. That would keep things simple and 'match' the rival console.
The Xbox Gone.
Xbox Handheld- Xbox Surface Portable
Xbox Console- Xbox Surface
Since they are leaning into PC. Now’s the time to get the surface branding included. However surface isn’t a huge seller. So maybe the name would do more harm than good. Not sure. I do not use windows outside of work. But if i had to or could choose my work laptop i would get a surface. They are well made and have nice features.
Xbox Gamecast
@Kaloudz @IOI nooo don’t name it the same as the Xbox (original), that will only increase confusion. You’d have to clarify which one you’re talking about each time by adding the year and Xbox 2027 edition is not a catchy name! It’d be like ‘New 3DS’ or ‘New iPad’ all over again 😅
This is an xbox.
People might buy it then.
Xbox X6 before ps6 would be funny
@Cakefish True 🤣 I agree with the author though, they've picked some daft names since 360. Perhaps stick with the codename? Xbox Prime? and Prime Lite?
Xdeck it's not a box like the consoles it's a deck I suppose so that's the logical choice to me.
Couldn't be bothered less by this though unless it's got good performance for a very cheap price why would I care when I have a series x 🤷
Super Xbox and Xboy.
Since they will eventually probably stop producing consoles if the handheld is successful just call it Xbox and as new generations of the handheld is released just number them. Xbox, Xbox 2. Xbox 3 and so on. I personally think the way they name the consoles hurts sales too. My nephew bought a One S thinking he was getting the latest console.
Xbox Handy
Xbox Go would have been good but didn't Sony use that
Xbox Phoenix
Xbox Legion
Xbox Armada
the XBOX Cast X
Xbox Dream X
maybe we should all patent our ideas and if they choose it where take action.
@Foxx_64740 honestly, a smart way of redifining the "generations" to get on equal footing. I'd listen to this pitch if I were an MS exec.
Throwing my hat in the ring for a another likely confusing nomenclature, home console is Xbox Terra and handheld is Xbox Orbit.
Xbox Series 2 (if there is only one model)
Xbox Model X
Xbox Model S
or simply:
Xbox
As for the handheld:
Xbox Portable
Xbox Mobile
Xboy
Nothing with ‘X’ in the damn title!
@datamonkey so maybe just "box"?
Well since they plan to combine xbox and windows pc fully
Call the console Xbox Fusion, and the handheld X-held
The handheld can be the Xbox Series XH (X for Xbox and H for handheld). The new consoles can be Xbox Series XX and Series XS.
I agree completely. Microsoft’s naming conventions are a little odd.
Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox One
Xbox One X
Xbox Series X
That is hardly what I would call a logical sequence, or any sort of sequence at all, in fact. For non-gamers (parents) it must be especially confusing. The obvious solution is to ask which is the most expensive? That will likely be the newest model.
As to what to call the very newest model, I have no idea.
Xbox A?
Xbox Series Y? Z?
Actually the name XBox Prime is not too bad, given previous examples. Although it does make me think of Transformers.
I got the perfect name. There's two of them, so you just call them both, the Xbox Two. Nailed it!
I would like "XBOX Go"
Garbage that shouldn't have PC anything on it and should work properly and well like a console should, not like a PC with endless fixing
Name = "Should have been like PS6"
Personally I'd like it the console to be called Xbox 5 (due to it being the 5th Xbox gen.) and for the handheld, Xbox Go has a nice ring to it.
Xbox GO and Xbox 7
Xbox Nexus. Lean hard into making the Xbox user experience universal on all devices. Don't just make an app for your modified windows handheld. Bring the console experience and expand it by adding the capabilities of PC. Make this available on any and every device. Focus on quality control. Streaming should feel seamless. The Nexus will be the central hub for your Xbox experience. Utilize the modern hardware available and add compatibility for ALL Xbox disks to run on your central hub. Windows integration into the console similar to the handheld. This allows for seamless emulation. Bind together the ease of access of a console with the opportunities of a gaming PC. The Nexus and any Streaming devices, handheld devices, PC's should have the same experience for the consumer. How you play is completely up the the user.
@Runex2121 But it works and thats all that matters for marketing. PS1/2/3/4/5/6 is simple and effective for describing exactly what it is.
Logically you go Roman numeral like the Superbowl, then you know what is the latest and greatest version & you get to use more X's without it seeming like an adult only console. 😁
Then if you want more clarity or confusion, depending on your point of view, add extra letters for different versions...
Xbox XXV series H = handheld
Xbox XXVII series X|S
Obviously like the Superbowl you don't actually say X X V I I, you say Xbox 27 series X|S 😁
@Kaloudz OMG! I love the Xbox Mini! It's so cute. lol
But hmmm.... I kind of like what they've settled on right now and they shouldn't overthink it. It should be simple and based on what we know sooooo...
Console: Series X (example X2, X3 etc etc)
Handheld: Series S (example S1, S2 etc etc)
Handheld Xbox Go
Console Xbox Series X 2.0
Since they are combining Xbox and Windows, call it the Windows Xbox Portable or just Windows XP for short.
@Utena-mobile Ah yeah those would work too. I guess it would make things a lot simpler to understand too, as the years go on.
@IGN_Commenter haha...
Sony never have this issue, they just change the number 😂
The handheld should be called The Last Grasp, and the console, the Series Finale... 🤣
If the new xbox has the new xbox os (windows optimized for gaming?) then the console should just be named 'XBOX' since it's a new start or maybe XBOX W (Windows). XBOX H (handheld) or XBOX P (portable) sounds good for the handheld to me. They should make it simple and ditch the weird making no sense naming.
Ps6 n 7 beat Sony to it 🤣
Xbox nemesis
Xbox and Ex Box
The Microsoft eXcel
Xbox Mega and Xbox Mini.
@Cakefish You already have to clarify you are talking about the original console by saying something like OG Xbox because Xbox is also the brand, same reason everyone calls it PS1 / PlayStation 1 and not just "PlayStation" even though that was it's name
I'd call the handheld Xbox Go or similar.
Not sure about the console, but simplicity rules. Series S|X is awful
Whatever you do: don't let whomever named the last 2 generations name this one. Xbox One and Xbox Series were both really dumb naming conventions. Keep it simple, which is not a thing Microsoft is known for on any products.
What about the Xbox Phoenix, since something new is rising from the ashes of the old traditional console into this new hybrid
@TheSimulator yeah nothing is stopping them from calling it Xbox 7. It would be funny and annoy Sony and irritate the fantards
@Decimateh Or the Play Serious 10, Or PS10
Whatever it is, we know it will be stupid at best and confusing to consumers at worst.
The X, The Box and the Xbox
Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One S/X, Xbox Series S/X, ….. Xbox Series 7 (which is the 7th Xbox model ?) has a nice ring to it and its one higher than PS6. Can have Xbox Series 7p / Xbox Series 7 for portable / home consoles.
