Weekend time! We've got loads of great new content on Xbox right now, including a bunch of Xbox Game Pass additions, four Free Play Days titles, and the big release of Assassin's Creed Shadows on Xbox Series X and Series S!
Here's what we're playing this weekend:
Fraser Gilbert, Editor
I have to admit, despite having the likes of WWE 2K25 and MLB The Show 25 to get to, I keep reverting to Balatro on Xbox Game Pass at the moment. I recently said how it's become my Game of the Year for 2024 quite unexpectedly, and it's probably going to take a while before it leaves my rotation - it still feels like I'm just figuring things out!
I do have a desire to play World of Warcraft via NVIDIA GeForce Now as well. Once I've plugged a mouse and keyboard into my Series X it works pretty well for the most part, so that might end up taking my time over the weekend.
Have a good one, folks!

To celebrate 19 years of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I think I'll be revisiting Bethesda's Xbox 360 title with Game Pass this weekend. As Sea Of Thieves is now also seven years old, now seems like a good time to return to the pirate life and check out the latest season.
Happy gaming, everyone!

Since it released I´ve taken every chance to play
Assassins Creed: Shadows - Im around 4 hours in and so far this is really good. First off it looks amazing on the Pro, been switching between 40 fps and 60 fps and Im settling on the balanced mode of 40 fps. Last night as I was climbing a tower there was a thunderstorm, and I ended up just sitting there enjoying the show. Very beautiful game. I also tuned the hud, removing health bars on enemies for example which makes it a lot more immersive. Gameplay and combat is great, combat is a lot better than I expected as playing as a ninja really means you need to be sneaky most o the time as open conflict against several opponents (they´ll come running from the noice) often ends with me dead. Exploration is fun, but its been done before as it’s an AC game. Cant wait to play more, I love these kinds of games and this one is very good on top of that so Im probnably looking at 60-100 hours of pure fun here 😊
Split Fiction with my wife, then hopefully I'll be reach another Star Wars Outlaws planet. I've been dabbling with Dirt Rally 2.0 in VR using PS5 controller 'gyro' to steer. Surprisingly immersive.
Happy gaming fellow gamers!
Xenoblade Chronicles X currently, then Atelier Yumia eventually.
I like my Japanese games MADE by Japanese people, with Ghost of Tsushima being the sole exception to that rule.
Almost done with Sea of Stars on Switch, I was recommended to pursue the true ending.
Not sure what to play next yet but Octopath Traveler 2, Elec-Head, Grapple Dog, Jedi Survivor and Princess Peach Showtime are all on the shortlist.
It's Assassin's Creed Shadows for me. Really loving it! I think I'm close to 20 hours and I can't get enough.
Been on a bit of a Warhammer 40K push this past week or two.
So will continue with WH40K: Rogue Trader & WH40K: Inquisitor - Martyr over the weekend. (Also I did get Space Marines 2 in a sale and completed the campaign. Best I can say is I am glad I didn't pay full price for it.)
Can't wait to get stuck into Atomfall next week. Will probably sub to ubi+ to give AC: Shadows a go once I am done with Atomfall. Too many games I want to play but that is a good problem to have.
Spending some time on River City Girls 2, Rainbow Six Extraction and Star Wars Outlaws, which I'm enjoying quite a lot
I’m hoping to start Split Fiction or Assassin’s Creed Shadows this weekend
Had an itch for a run through RDR2 again that I needed to scratch so just enjoying the first 3 chapters of that before it all gets a bit intense and depressing. Chilling out in the wild west for those first chapters really is one of gamings great, cathartic experiences. Just perfect.
And Balatro, which I'm now playing on my phone for ease of access. Which I don't recommend actually. It would be like John Frusciante moving in with a heroin dealer. Good game, mind.
I'm about 8 hours into AC Shadows and it's pretty great so far barely touched the story I've just been exploring and petting loads of dogs lol.
This weekend I'm playing Condemned: Criminal Origins and Trails through Daybreak(finally back at it) with some Balatro on the side.
Shadows. What a game it is so far. The amount of changes they've made (albeit small) round up the strongest AC entry in years. I'm having a blast, and man, is it gorgeous.
Avowed (Series X) Finished up with Dawnshore and now heading to the next area. Currently level 9
WWE 2K24 (Series X) Doing some GM Mode against my son and two computers. We just had our first PPV and I am currently on top with WCW.
That's probably it for me this weekend. Whatever it is your playing I hope you have a good one!!!
@FraserG Wait what WoW on Series X??? Did I miss something?
Second playthrough of Split Fiction with a second person. It’s just as enjoyable as the first time around honestly, even without the surprises, it’s just that good.
Also have Horizon Remastered (PC, obviously) and Pumpkin Jack on the current rota.
Avowed and XCX:DE two giant games that will be taking me well into may. At least XCX will. I'm hoping I can finish avowed by the time South of Midnight launches.
I planned on buying AC Shadows...but when 33 immortals dropped on GP I had no idea what it was and downloaded it anyway to check it out. Needless to say, I'm hooked. Excellent game and I know/hope they continue to add to it. I'm addicted to it at the moment but when it wears off in a couple weeks I'll then join the AC shadows hype.
Battlefield 1
Gotta work today but took most of Monday off so AC Shadows tomorrow and Monday. It’s soooo good!
I’m loving the game. It’s gorgeous, the stealth feels like stealth (AC’s brand of course), the game doesn’t hold your hand and you have to look for clues, base building that feels meaningful, lots to do without making the map an icon fest, and so many narrative callbacks. Plus the characters are fun to play as and feel different. Their backstory is explored in a way that doesn’t feel like an exposition dump (I like those mind you) and is fun. Art direction is great. Sometimes it is a pure simulation, taking AC’s brand of realistic “program” to a wonderful display, other times it feels like a jidai eki with the music and cinematography choices, there’s “Kurosawa-eki like elements” (without framing the game on them the way GoT does) and there are moments of sumi-e and somehow it never feels jarring. I feel powerful as ether character but grounded because the game will punish the character’s weaknesses if you just go in willy nilly. (The first AC game where I have died (not failed a mission) more than twice). Best part is I haven’t even scratched the surface. Gonna be playing this for months.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 (PC)
A rare treat in this increasingly nonsense industry. Easily the best game I've played in some time and an RPG that surpasses pretty much every other RPG released this generation by a country mile.
Will definitely be double dipping once the GoG version is released for the offline installers.
Hello there fellow gamers.
This weekend is all about Assassins Creed Shadows.
Can´t get enough of it. Been awhile since I played a game that hooked me like this. And the imersion mode were the characters speak their native tongue is just perfect.
I might also dable in Bleach Rebith of Souls..... If they fix the subtitles that is. I do understand most of Japanese, but I´m not fluent enough, so I need my subtitles to help me out 😜
Cheers and happy gaming weekend everyone
KCD2 - I had to go back to a save before the big wedding when it became very clear I wasn’t levelled enough for the ensuing sections! A bit more grinding - including actually learning how to sword fight - and I’m much better levelled and equipped to progress. I really enjoy the pace of the game.
@RaZieLDaNtE yes the subs are “interesting” aren’t they? It makes sense for the English language version as one can say it was localized but right now that is my only complaint.
Assassin’s creed Shadows, of course. Ngl, the first few hours have been a little boring. Also, not sure what to make of the map. Admittedly I’ve only explored a small area so far, but you almost always seem to be following a road/path, making it feel like you’re just being funnelled from place to place. Hopefully the map will open up over time. Don’t even get me started on night time in the game, especially when it’s raining - I can’t hardly see a thing 😡 there should be an option to carry a torch to light the way. I’ve enjoyed almost every AC game though, so hopefully Shadows will grow on me.
Update. Well, after playing it most of this afternoon I can happily say the game is growing on me. I’m getting used to the map, and that there’s some areas which are simply impassable because of cliffs/trees, which means you have to read the map looking for paths/roads. I still think the brightness/contrast needs sorting out. It’s often too dark at night, and after adjusting the levels it means it’s too bright during the day. Still trying to find the sweet spot. I still think the opening few hours or so are a little boring, but yeah, I’m getting into it now 😀
I’m finished up the second zone in Avowed and at 40 hours. Is every zone gonna take me 20 hours??? I thought people were saying this game was short!
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 for the final few missions and Assassins Creed Shadow - which I am finding really enjoyable so far. It's right up there with Ghost of Tsushima and probably a bit ahead of it too. I do wonder if Yotei will live up to Tsushima which is a concern. It's probably the game I'll get a PS5 Pro for ahead of GTA 6
I’ve just finished Jusant on Game Pass and loved it. Going to play Still Wakes the Deep next.
Also, midway through Gears 2 in coop with a buddy of mine. Having a blast.
Monster Hunter Wilds and Disney Dreamlike Valley.
AC shadows & WWE 2k25 for me.
I'm going to be hitting the backlog trying to finish off the main campaign on dead rising 3 it's a really fun game and a little bit of gears 5 multiplayer aswell getting some achievements polished off on that happy weekend peoples 👍
@Ricky-Spanish how's the scene on gears 5 multiplayer? Still easy to find games? I've thought about hopping back in for a bit now but just haven't done it yet
@jesse_dylan I thought the same thing. Each map in Avowed took me about 18 hours. It's not the short game everyone was claiming if you do every side quest.
@Blastfemur I definitely under-budgeted the time commitment! At the same time, I don't really want to skip the side quests. It's odd to me that most gamers apparently don't do side quests?? (and then complain games are too short
@Tasuki Nope, it's been possible for a while now! Planning on covering it more over the next few days 👍
https://www.purexbox.com/news/2024/06/yes-theres-a-way-to-play-world-of-warcraft-on-your-xbox-console
@FatGuyInLilCoat Yeah it not to bad on quick play especially over the weekend then odd few bots but that's to be expected jump back on mate 👍
Microsoft Wordament (Android) - Dailies and Adventure mode as usual
Final Fantasy (Windows Phone) - Finally just started it this weekend.
Droplitz Delight (Windows Phone) - Having problems getting this to run without crashing...
I’ve been playing Avowed with matches of Marvel Rivals and Street Fighter 6 sprinkled in. I also finished the Princess Peach game with my daughter earlier.
Away on a rugby tour this weekend but managed to put a few hours into AC Shadows on Friday morning. Visually stunning and the combat is slick and fun. Lots of other positives and a few quirky bits that might grind over time.
Will probably end up being another of those big games that I enjoy up to the 20 hour mark then feel like I’ve seen/experienced enough of it.
@FraserG Ah ok I heard about that before I was hoping that they finally brought it over to console. Still will be interested to read how it goes for you.
Over 50 hours on Avowed, I Will finish the game this weekend.
@Tasuki hopefully that never happens. Would be too restrictive, wow is too complex for the console not to mention addons. Speaking of which, WOW is what I have been playing.
I picked up Shadows, Xenoblade Chronicles X and LoZ: Echoes of Wisdom! I'm not sure what to play first. A good problem to have!
@Hexamex-Tex It depends really. I can see them doing Classic no problem retail that's a whole different story. As for addons they are not necessary to play WoW.
PC-
The First Bersker Khazan demo to finish or until early access is available then continue.
XBOX-
Maybe finish up Elden Ring SotE too.
Ps5-
More Death Stranding or nothing.
Switch-
F-ZERO 99 or nothing.
Bloodborne on the PS5 and some Hotline Miami on the Series X which I'm loving it so far.
Well here we go with another wild WAYP. The week was some awesome games all around. Mostly Trails Through Daybreak, Mario and Luigi, Monster Hunter, Pirate Yakuza, Emio and FFXIV Dawntrail. Was able to wrap up the current patch of XIV so I’m gonna put it down for a little. Also got to start Disgaea 7 and that game is really charming and cute. Oh I also finally beat Emio and man lemme tell ya that is a hidden gem of the switch generation and a dark horse of last years releases in terms of GOTYs. The story was easily the best of any of the Famicom Detective Club games. Most of the weekend was spent with the GF so the only game we even thought of was maybe some Split Fiction. Didn’t end up doing it tho we did have a fun day at the mall where I got to complete my JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Manga collection. Rest of the weekend I’m thinking is gonna be some Trails Through Daybreak and Monster Hunter Wilds. Trails I really wanna beat soon so I’m just gonna keep chipping away at it with even the smallest of sessions per day that then maybe one big session can knock it out. And Monster Hunter is still crazy fun man the gameplay is so addicting I don’t care if it’d easier them other games it’s way more fun now too. Otherwise I’m thinking this week is mostly gonna consist of some Trails Through Daybreak, Mario and Luigi Brothership, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, Tales of Graces F Remastered, Split Fiction, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, Dynasty Warriors Origins, Monster Hunter Wilds, Disgaea 7 and Pirate Yakuza. Still wanna knock out Mario Party before the Switch 2 Direct. Also wanna try to start WWE2K25 to coincide with RAW from Scotland this week, Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition, Atelier Yumia The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Then that’s the lead up to late April with Fatal Fury City of The Wolves and Clair Obscura Expedition 33.The wrestling thing this week being WWE2K25 and the Road to Wrestlemania again. As stated I really am excited to start up WWE2K25 and see all the fun new stuff in it like The Island and try out stuff like The Bloodline Dynasty Showcase mode. As for the Road to Wrestlemania honestly it’s getting semi boring but we did get a really hype match announced in the Triple Threat of Roman Reigns Vs Seth Rollins Vs CM Punk so I am still really hype for Wrestlemania 41 in Las Vegas. Anime of the week gotta go to Solo Leveling, 100 Girlfriends and Sakamoto Days. Trying to get back into the swing of things with anime and those are the three that really hit right now like they’re really really good. Mostly still working on shows on things like Netflix and Disney Plus like Daredevil Born Again or Running Point. Podcasts of this week gotta go to Castle Superbeast, Big Think Dimension, Into The Aether, RPGsites Tetracast, Minnmax, Jeff Gerstmann, Kit and Krysta, Last Stand Media, Easy Allies, Second Wind, Nextlander, Cultaholic Wrestling, Weapon Wheel Podcast and Remap Radio. Still shout to Weapon Wheel it seriously has come out as like my new favorite podcast right now. As always yall stay safe, be amazing to each other. Have a totally safe and amazing weekend and of course Happy Gaming.
