With various PlayStation State of Play events and Nintendo Directs over the last few months, it got us wondering about Xbox. It feels like an awfully long time since we've had an event dedicated to our beloved green X, and we reckon we're due a livestream sometime soon.
In fact, we haven't really seen anything of note since last year's The Game Awards, which followed the 20th anniversary event. Xbox had a major presence at the award show, with an incredible Hellblade 2 reveal along with a first gameplay look at a huge upcoming Game Pass title; A Plague Tale: Requiem.
Since then though, Sony and Nintendo have stolen the spotlight, with various livestream events in early 2022. Not to mention big releases, as Sony has just delivered two huge exclusives with Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7.
So, we're in a bit of a weird spot with Xbox right now. It won't be too long until E3 season, which has now morphed into the 'Summer Game Fest', but that still feels like a long way off. With that in mind, do you think it's time for a dedicated Xbox event soon? Will we see one before 'E3'?

Seeing how Microsoft is in the process of owning what feels like half the major players of E3 whatever event they do will be expected to be similar in scale. Best they do their own event at the beginning of summer and use the other events to reveal more details on already announced games.
I would love to see a roadmap of their currently owned studios over the next year to five years.
After the Activision news it's been extremely quiet. We don't have release dates for any first party Exclusives besides starfield. There's no confirmation of any third party Exclusives for this year either. Its far too quiet. This time last year was super exciting there was news and updates almost every week. Now its just so Dead. I hope they do a huge event.
Honestly I just want the release dates of the already announced games start to come out. I want to know when I'll be able to play Redfall, Perfect Dark, Avowed, Contraband, Everwild and everything else Xbox has announced so far.
I think it depends. If you mean any event associated with Xbox then yes I think there'll be one of those Twitch streams showing off Xbox indie games in March or April. All 3 (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) do something focused on indie games around March/April.
However if you mean one with Xbox Game Studios games, Microsoft still seems to be in the mindset of 1 massive event (E3) with mostly silence surrounding it so I think the most that'll happen with game announcements prior to E3 is:
If they have something to show real gameplay
Say 10 minutes real action.
Also with some AAA 2022 release dates.
Otherwise it’s all show and no go, and so far that’s what 2022 looks like AAA wise from their studios.
2023 news would be ok, but come on the series consoles are 2 years old this November 2022
Yes we had FH5 probably the single only game of true AAA quality all round.
It's time for some news but do they have any? Honestly we're seeing more game delays abd very poor launches.... clearly COVID/work from home is impacted the industry a lot more than they are letting the general public know. Sony is supposed to have a good year because it delayed titles from last year, and that's if they aren't delayed again. I'd say to definitely expect a thin 2022 for everyone if you're after them big AAA games. Get through that backlog while you wait.
GTFO announced for consoles!
I would like to know if there is going to be a GearsTactics 2 or similar game being worked on. Plus a Crackdown 4.
In fact any news on future releases would be good to know.
Maybe not a good time to have an event with everything going on in world right now.
@Ocat
Good point you have there.
Showing games especially like a COD might not be in best taste.
Starfield should be ok, future space etc.
Need to hear something about Forza Motorsport.
Will be interesting to see if they're ready to go with an autumn/winter launch... or, whether Sony's GT release has MS scrabbling to add to, or improve, the game before release.
Wouldn't be a good look to release later than GT with an inferior game.
Hoping that's not the case and we get some racing goodness coming to gamepass this year.
Starfield in-game footage has to drop in the summer.
I think Deathloop should be coming to gamepass as well this year (not a new game, but new to Xbox and a win for gamepass).
Hoping MS have something surprising tucked up their sleeves... but I think (outside of what I've mentioned above) big exclusives will be 2023 or beyond... maybe they can tell us what decade the new Fable will release in 😆
This year really shaping to be the worst in a long time, only one AAA exclusive in Starfield, MS really dropped the ball for 2022, at least it means that 2023 will be packed
No and any big announcements will be given to whatever thing Jeff Kieghly is hosting.
@antstephenson If anything Deathloop makes GamePass worse. Man that game was bad. 😕
@Zucaritas
But they should have not dropped the ball.
They had studios also before they started buying up others etc.
They new they were releasing a new console series s and x. Great consoles they are especially series x.
Maybe they need better management or focus teams to sort themselves out. I still can’t believe unless deliberate they did not know what they were doing.
They had a bit of lean time since release and it is two years this November.
One problem I think they have and it happened with 343i they stretch their studios to thin doing to many things to or in a game at once or to many games in development at once.
They keep saying certain studios have 2 or 3 games in development.
For god sake let them all focus on one game at a time and complete it.
We know this is how Sony and Nintendo mainly run their studios and it seems to get AAA games to their gamers.
@FatalBubbles
That's interesting... Seems to be a divergence between critic scores (good) and user scores (not as good) on metacritic.
I remember key gaming sites giving it superb reviews, but seems gamers aren't as enamored.
Still, as I have a subscription I'll be giving it a go... Nothing to lose.
@RedShirtRod id definitely be down for an in person event at the Microsoft theater. That’s live-streamed. Even as an online watcher, I miss the crowds (however fake they were). Watching the pre-filmed videos without a crowd is like watching sports without a crowd. Fine. But not as fun.
i only want this if we're going to start seeing gameplay and, dare i say it, release dates. i'm all done with the CGI trailers and "i dunno, some day maybe?" release windows.
@Zucaritas to be fair, a couple of their expected games, scorn and STALKER 2, have been pushed nearly or actually, to 2023. but yea, not great. on the other hand if Redfall is good and Forza actually drops this year ( i think it might? i dunno), it will be ok i guess.
@armondo36 the latest info was that Forza motorsport is uncertain, probably first half 2023 and Redfall got delayed to 2023 too. Those other games aren't exclusives, just gamepass filler.
@Zucaritas yea it's not looking good. Starfield better be amazing, because what else is there....?
@antstephenson I’m being slightly hyperbolic but I didn’t think it was great. 6/10 for me. And you’re 100% right, no downside to trying it at no cost, maybe you’ll love it.
Only worth having an event if there’s enough to show
They just don't have enough to show.
They wont even be getting much of the product Bethusda will be able to supply yet, and even though we all think Activision/ Blizzard is a done deal - it will be many years before MS starts to see many titles from that cash splash.
No way Starfield comes this year - I'd bet money on early 2024.
Other than 3rd parties titles launching on GP its going to be another quite year I'm afraid, which is why I play everywhere, -
theres plenty of great stuff on other formats while I wait for MS to get the big guns firing.
GP means its always worth owning an Xbox, even in these quite times.
Looking at the release schedule, Unless they have something coming up in the next 4/5 months, I don't know if we will see 'too' much from Microsoft.
The Activision/Blizzard purchase is NOT likely to go through this year so I don't expect MS to be able to say anything and I doubt we will hear anything until the deal is completed - another 'round table' chat like they had when Bethesda's deal went through.
I wouldn't be surprised though if we do get a '3rd party' partners showcase - like they did in early May 2020 (which started off with Bright Memory: Infinite and also had Dirt 5, The Medium,AC: Valhalla etc) with games like Warhammer: Dark Tide, A Plague Tale, Scorn etc and keep their own 'exclusives' for around E3. It seems that most Xbox Studio's won't be ready to release a game before E3 so keep Starfield, Forza Motorsport etc until then. The only game I can think of that may be 'ready' sooner is Redfall but that could be a 'late' Summer release and fit into their E3/Summer plans
