So, yesterday a pretty interesting report came out of Windows Central that discussed several aspects of Microsoft's next-gen console plans - including the fact that multiple handheld projects are currently in the works over at Xbox. However, what we want to talk about here is this notion that the Xbox Series X successor could be "closer to Windows than ever". If this turned out to be true, would you still be interested in the next-gen Xbox?
Of course, without hard evidence on what exactly this console will be, it's hard to know just how we'd all feel about it. Still, if you take into account Microsoft's current multiplatform moves, combined with a home console device that's more of a PC dressed up as an Xbox - is that something you'd feel compelled to buy six or seven years after Xbox Series X and S?
Here at Pure Xbox, we're always interested in the consoles Microsoft builds - that goes without saying. While adjusting to Xbox's new landscape hasn't always been easy, a more PC-like console could actually be pretty darn compelling. Imagine a hybrid of sorts; a built-from-the-ground-up device that also contains some compelling PC features like the ability to access multiple storefronts and much older Windows titles. That could be appealing to a lot of gamers!
Having said that, there are certain conditions we'd still want to see as longtime Xbox fans. We'd still want the device to 'behave' like a console with tailor-made software and stable updates. We'd still want the system to look and feel like an Xbox when we unpack it and plug the thing in under our TVs. And finally, we'd want Microsoft's awesome backwards compatibility program to work seamlessly on any new hardware - which according to yesterday's report is in the team's plans. If all of that can be combined with the flexibility of PC, we can't see why this couldn't work for Team Green.
This is all hypothetical for now of course, with this Windows-like Xbox information coming from a report at the moment - and it being pretty vague information at that. Even so, we're very curious to hear of your perspective on this. Would a sort-of PC/Xbox hybrid be a device you'd be interesting in buying come 2027, or whenever it'd launch? Do you want Xbox to stick to a more traditional console? Or, do you see Xbox Series X|S as the last Xbox system you'd ever need?
If This PC-Like Device Happens, Are You Still Interested In The Next-Gen Xbox? (862 votes)
- Absolutely, I'll be there on day one!
- I'm interested, but it'd have to be a significant upgrade on the Xbox Series X
- I'm not sure yet, I need to know more
- Not really, I want Xbox to make a more traditional next-gen console
- Nope, I'm done with Xbox consoles after Series X|S!
Vote in the poll up above and talk to us about this interesting prospect down below!

Having Xbox and gamepass already complement owning a pc really well. If we can side load steam, gog, and epic then it will be really appealing.
I am more likely to buy it if it's pc like or pc oriented.
Microsoft have to do something different to Sony, so this makes sense. There’s often been games - usually indie titles - that either don’t come out on console, or take ages, so having more parity between PC releases and on Microsoft’s next console can only be a good thing. I’m definitely interested.
Depends on the details. Does it natively support the full Xbox library without needing to rely on Play Anywhere? Does it still have an online multiplayer paywall? Is it the full Steam client it runs or some weird feature-restricted lite version?
All depends on the games for me, always have, always will.
First time series X got shown, i was set on buying it. But unfortunately the games just didn’t appeal to me enough to buy. And now most are coming to PS, so i don’t have much incentive buying a whole other console.
Only way i buy a next gen Xbox is if they go back to exclusivity. I know some disagree with exclusivity. But thats how i choose a console, for their games. And if those games keep coming to PS, i won’t be buying a Xbox. However i’m open to being persuaded by whatever Xbox comes up with for next gen.
As for this whole PC like thing, it’s all much too vague for me to even have an opinion on it, i just have to see how they’ll differentiate themselves and make it attractive enough compared to just building your own PC. But frankly, not to keen on PC myself. I want a more hassle free console experience.
But at this point i don’t really care about the hardware, both Xbox Prime and PS6 will have great hardware, it’s the games i’m interested in
Not sure, as I said many times before that type of device would need a fundamental rethink of the console business model.
If it’s at a competitive price and allows me buy and play games easily from Steam and my legacy Xbox library then sure why not, but if they make it cumbersome to do so, or it’s obscenely expensive then I wouldn’t see the value opposed to just building a PC.
One thing I have crystal clear tho, I’m not spending any cent on buying software from the Microsoft Store ever again, if I end up buying that PC/Console I’d buy all my games on Steam, with MS there’s always uncertainty about something.
All depends on the implementation.
There are some possibilities that would be amazing, the library would be huge and only Nintendo games would be (legally) off the console.
However, I can't see how this doesn't lead to a system that requires way more tinkering than a console and the idea of running anything windows is enough to put me off completely - The Xbox has enough weird unstable moments as it is.
It feels like an attempt to be everything to all people but I'm not convinced that's possible.
It also sounds expensive...
Nope I have a decent PC which sorts me for Gamepass and my digital library is almost entirely on PS5/Switch/Steam. I won’t get rid of my Series X but it hasnt had all that much use in the 4 years I’ve owned it so I have very little intention of getting the nextbox unless it offers something ridiculously unique and enticing.
I will buy two of them. Xbox dominates console market on every important metric and it only makes sence for Xbox to take over PC gaming too.
Probably not as that’s why I opted for the console. The biggest reason to own a console at this point is convenience. Slipping a disk in and playing the games physically and it just working will always be easier than worrying about wether my PC is too old or too new to play certain games.
Let’s see where we are at in 30mpnths time when it will be roughly due.
Specs? Price (trump will still be in office). Who knows how the world will be. Maybe streaming will be in a better spot by then?
Way too many variables and too far away to give it much thought.
It's super appealing and I want it yesterday. The only landmine (which will presumably need some level of widespread Dev support) is that most people would use it on a standard 60hz TV which means it to have some kind of driver level optimisation of classic "graphics or performance" modes.
That said, if it's as powerful as MS want us to believe then a 60fps frame cap shouldn't be a problem for pretty much everything!
Not sure. It depends on how things are next gen. I may just stick with Nintendo next generation, depending on games and cost. I’ll follow Kojima, Remedy, and Final Fantasy where they go too, but I’m not sold on a next gen Xbox or PlayStation currently.
@Steel76 Xbox consoles already run on Windows.
This will be a Xbox ui over windows kernel like now. But it is rumored to be able to boot full windows 11. So you could use it just like a series X like we do now. But also boot up windows and do spreadsheets in word or Excel and load steam and Epic games store. Also it will give PC dev’s a baseline to code games to which they don’t have at the moment. It was even said older Xbox games will have the flexibility to play with the graphics settings and frame rates. So i am highly interested. If it get’s rid of the online paywall then it’s even that much more exciting. The battle between MS and Steam begins. With Steam unable to run some of the biggest live service games due to anti cheat code. Hence it don’t run COD. Point one in favor of Windows. MS has a chance here to do something really ground breaking and exciting for players. But they must execute properly. Something they are know to be 50/50 with.
To me it is getting absurd to have a super powerful console and it can't also be a replacement for a PC or vise versa. Even if Microsoft did not make the next console like a PC, Series X|S would anyhow probably be my last dedicated console. PC gaming content is so much bigger & cheaper (eg. PC Game pass is cheaper & ability to buy games/keys cheaper). Future primarily gaming on PC is probably the future for me... I'm not going to be spending for figures $$$$ each for the next gen console and a PC.
@Steel76 the console is rumored to boot full windows but not run on it. It will run Xbox Os on a windows kernel, much like it does now for plug and play support. So it’s much cleaner and easy going that what you are thinking with just windows 11 as the dashboard. That i wouldn’t be a fan of and MS knows console players don’t want that. Phil don’t even want that, he said it about the current handhelds on the market.
I don't even know what that means, but after this generation I'm not going back to Sony, so yes. But I'll wait.
Makes no difference once it's an Xbox and I can hook it up to my TV it's all good!
I don't understand why anyone would care if it's more pc like what would be the downsides??🤷
PS will always be my no 1 place to play games.
But I'd like a PC option that fits under the telly and has a OS with no keyboard mouse requirements and no need to faff about with drivers, so if they can deliver on a decent OS experience I'd love the new Xbox machine and I thought this was what they were referring to the moment they committed to a new machine. It was clearly never going to be another Xbox as we have known it, that's dead for the future, but this could be so much better. Its either Xbox, or a new Steam machine, but one of them is going to do it. I don't think it will cost less than £1200 though...
Its all depends on the games for me not the box I play them on. Even if it was a shoebox stuffed full of wires as long as it has the content it would have my interest.
It would take a lot to convince me not to be there Day 1, but i'll wait to see what they are offering.
Another thought.... I wonder if going too far down the PC route leads to more security concerns?
Are we going to be buying anti-virus and malware software. Surely the closer we get to windows the closer we get to all those security vulnerabilities?
I will admit my tech knowledge on such matters is way more year 2000 than 2025 so happy to be set straight.
Duh. It’s more, not less for being a pc
The Switch era showed me that for the most part if you wait long enough for games to come to your preferred system of choice, it'll happen eventually. So I think regarding Switch 2/PS6/Next Xbox, I'll only get Switch 2.
@Titntin Yes this is pretty much what I want. An under-tv PC that removes most of the faff of owning a PC (driver updates, shader compilation, fiddling with settings, bad ports) and just lets me PLAY GAMES faster and more smoothly. Convenience is a HUGE factor and a fixed spec PC has many advantages over normal PC. e.g.
Microsoft and Sony still haven't convinced people they need the current hardware, I doubt many are anticipating the next that aren't already gonna buy them regardless. If anything they might sell more PS5s and Series Xs when the new consoles launch for the people still playing on PS4 & XBO.
Honestly going to need more details before deciding. Very disappointed with Xbox’s hardware this generation from a support/exclusives perspective but impressed with overall Microsoft Gaming software offerings. My biggest wish would be to play my Steam library on it though I understand that there are alternatives to that currently.
I dont really care what they want to call it, console, PC, paperweight...as long as it plugs into my TV and plays games that's all I need
These are MUST HAVES for me to even consider the new "console".
It MUST be able to plug into TV. No desire play handheld gaming rubbish. Not negotiable.
It still needs feel like I'm playing on an Xbox. Not negotiable.
It needs to function AS IS. None of that needing upgrade it every year. That is the VERY REASON I quit PC gaming and have ZERO desire ever go back to PC. Not negotiable.
As someone that already owns a decent gaming PC, the Prime would have to be something closer to a console than a PC to interest me.
There's a few reasons:
The upshot is that I will need a lot more detail than we have right now...
Nope. This gen has basically ruined my desire for next gen consoles going forward. I am just going to build a good gaming PC whenever my Series X and PS5 are getting too old by the sound of things. Xbox won't even have any real exclusives anymore anyways. Their entire plan going forward seems to revolve around services and I am tired of dealing with services and paying for them. To top it off Microsoft just isn't making nearly as good of games as they used to IMO. Time to move on I guess, wish it didn't have to be this way but Xbox is going in the direction they're going in and I guess I will just go in my own direction as a result.
When you say PC like, does that mean,
1) different hardware installable depending on how much cash you have?
2) trying to get games to work and constantly updating drivers?
3) random slow downs because you forgot to close Chrome browser?
It's kinda depressing that it feels like MS screwed the pooch to the point they just decide to ignore a generation and move on.
I'm all for new tech but can anyone really say they used what we all bought to it's full potential?
I'll hang fire for more details. There's been rumours and reports on rumours, yet everyone is now throwing out things in this thread like they have the exact details of the system. They don't. Nobody does outside of MS. Let's wait and see what's coming and, more importantly, what it costs.
They should just release a configurable PC with components you can remove and upgrade yourself. Keep whatever Xbox form factor on the outside and make it a freaking PC. If Microsoft was able to make it easy for me to pick a PC rather than build one which I want to do in 2027 then that's a no brainer. Then they can focus development on just PC. Make this easy for us guys! I still like the Xbox brand so if that's slapped on there even better.
@Weebleman for real man, I feel the XSX is underutilized and we aren't getting the bang for our buck. No 8k games and they skimp on all the promises on the box with 120fps, 4k and Ray tracing as they're all full of compromises. Want them to really develop more games to take advantage of the hardware's unique power and capabilities.
My main system has always been / is Xbox. I have a huge digital library, love the ecosystem and if they decide to go with a PC like experience I don't mind. Will be there day one, bar some colossal fudge up by Microsoft.
I'm going with 'done with Xbox after this gen'. I'll have a series S and will assume I'll be able to play the next gen for a good 5 years after it starts and longer, and after that I assume I'll be able to stream games and the quality of streaming will have improved by then. I also expect the price of the nextbox to be far too much for me to spend the money.
Representing the minority here, but I really don't want a branded PC. Reason why I exited the PC master race space was because I wanted a hustle free gaming experience. I'm already bothered with multiple performance modes (it exists so I can see in 30FPS how game could look, but as I can't stand it I need to switch to perf). Making next Xbox a tinkerbox is only going to make that far worse. Please move away as far as possible from Windows, open platforms, driver updates, shader compilation, and all other annoyances taking attention from actual gaming.
At this point I am stepping away from xbox and sony for next gen (ROI has been on steady decline for me and with Sony investing in PC, no need to keep buying boxes that I can play all the same games on PC) and moving back towards PC, so if anything I hope a "PC like" xbox means better integration with windows and PC gaming.
Don’t have the knowledge to really understand.
But if I turn it on and it does all the same things as the series x and just plays the games, then what really is the difference?
Much like the Steam machines before, it would have to justify its existence vs a regular PC.
Is it cheaper than that a PC of the same spec? Because that seems unlikely as consoles are sold at lost and make money from game licensing and store sales, if it supports other storefronts why should we (customers) buy from the Xbox store if the Steam/GoG/Epic version is cheaper? why should they (developers) bother making a Xbox version when the PC version works "fine"
That being said, creating a weirdo Psudo-PC that plays BC console games and has access to PC storefronts is the best way for them to leave the console business as our console libraries would (presumably) be accessible on PC in the future
From my perspective, I've owned every Xbox since Day 1 OG Xbox and as such have numerous games spanning the entire Xbox era of gaming. Whilst some may not be Backwards Compatible (right now), its still a LOT of games and a LOT of History with Xbox.
Coupled with Game Pass Ultimate, it makes so much sense to consider upgrading if/when MS bring out their next Hardware. GPU has enabled me to branch out to 'PC' - even if its just to Stream to my Laptop whilst my TV is in Use or maybe play 'on the go' with my Handheld PC - all saves synced so I can carry on playing 'anywhere'.
The fact that MS could release more games on Playstation doesn't make PS6 a 'more attractive' proposition than the next Xbox for 'MS' owned IP's. They'll all be on 'Xbox' Day 1, ALL be on Game Pass too and built for Windows/Xbox as the lead platform before 'porting' to Sony's hardware. I'll probably end up with a PS6 too - but not for Xbox/MS owned games and if it is more 'PC' with Steam/Epic store too, then it will likely have the biggest library of games.
Xbox runs on a version of Windows, uses DirectX and was initially designed to bring 'PC' games/gaming to the Living Room, make them more accessible. Now it maybe more beneficial to merge Windows 'PC' with Windows 'Xbox' and come full circle - after all MS were making Games before they made a Console and even before Sony entered the Gaming landscape. Now you don't need a 'expensive' PC or even a Console (streaming) to play, their games are accessible everywhere so a Windows PC/Console Hybrid probably makes most sense for MS...
I bought my first Xbox last year, a series X.
I have zero plans to buy another XBox after this. Partially because I’m a PS/Nintendo gamer first and foremost, partially because I got the Series X to play some previous exclusives for the first time ever…and now that MS has apparently given up on those, I have zero reason to buy MS hardware again.
I also REALLY dislike Smart Delivery. Like, really dislike it.
Yeah, I reckon, I’m pretty happy with Xbox to be honest. Personally speaking, the Series X (with Game Pass) is the best console I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned most of them, starting with the Atari VCS!
@Fiendish-Beaver Agree with all your points mate - my PC was £4k 2 years ago and I never use it for games. I'm typing on it now, but could've done that on a phone
If the OS hides all that though and I can just get into a game easy, I'm up for it. I'd prefer Steam as I own quite a few games on that..
@shoeses GTA 6 will move a huge chunk of those players on last gen consoles. Now that we are starting to finally get the bigger titles that only run on PS5 and series X. I suspect we will see loads of players coming in. However you could still be right that the Series X and PS5 will still sell well as it’s rumored the next Xbox PC hybrid will be $700-$800 and we know the PS6 will come in fairly high as well if the Pro is anything to go buy. Neither Sony or MS are willing to subsidize the hardware at a loss anymore.
I feel like this is the natural evolution for Xbox, it was always penned as the PC for your living room I would think it would be cool if they leaned into the game preservation aspect of it, give the new console full backwards compatibility from all previous Xbox consoles and maybe link up your game libraries from other services like Steam, GOG etc. (probably wishful thinking though)
I hate everything about PC gaming, so no thanks. My Series S does everything I want (and fits perfectly in my TV stand).
Absolutely:
1/A portable console with Windows, featuring an Xbox-like interface that is truly optimized for use on a portable console. For now, this doesn't exist—Windows is not optimized for a user-friendly experience on a portable console.
2/A console where you can easily play your Xbox games locally, on the cloud, enjoy Game Pass, AND also access other stores like Steam, Epic, etc.
Wow, I’m sold immediately! 🚀
I'm pretty excited about it to be fair. If there is one thing Xbox does best it's features like Quick Resume and it's implementations. What really impressed me is how this generation on the basis of that they were ahead of Sony. So if they match that momentum and go free online. They'll definitely have the cards for sure to make an impact one way or another next generation depending on how they deal them.
It has to be cheaper than building/prebuilt and run better. If building/buying a 4060(or whatever is equivalent at release) pc is cheaper than the neXbox, and runs games better, then why buy an xb?
Right now I think the next Xbox being a console/PC hybrid is the only way I will be buying it, so yeah, I hope it happens.
They have to be different to Sony, and they have acknowledged that, so I think this will happen.
The argument was being made that the PS5 Pro was getting close to a PC in pricing. If the next xbox is just a pre-built PC that u can't upgrade or change with new parts. I'd probably just get a PC for GPU and PS6 for the next generation.
No physical games basically means no , digital games are only worth a ten to twenty pounds to me. . I refuse to pay anymore. With a disc even if the game is part only on disc and the game installed. I have the license on the disc. I can play it when servers are down. and if they all get taken off line.
I haven't bought Avowed because of no physical. And i wont till its dirt cheap in sale. but by then i probably wont bother.
Looks like Ill be getting the new Switch. cause at least it will have a physical library.
Thing is PC gaming is cheaper because of all the deals and humble bundles and such like. I'm sure a more PC like Xbox wont see us getting more affordable games. Often PC versions of games are hugely discounted digitally long before the console versions are.
Maybe I'll just game on my old systems in the future and forget future generations.
It seems to many Microsoft titles are only digital now which I think looses them more sales then they think. Or if they do go physical many are produced in such low numbers that tracking down a copy physical is game in itself.
@Dalamar73 I don't game much on PC anymore, last built mine in 2018. I mostly use the series X and PS5 Pro. It would need to be subsidized to make me get it and not a similar or more powerful PC. A 4080 will probably still be more powerful than the next xbox and playstation. So that could be a tempting option.
I've always had a gaming PC going back to the early 90s but sometimes it's top of the line and sometimes I let it age as I play more on consoles. My current PC is extremely long in the tooth (RX 580) as I've been playing almost everything on console as my lifestyle changed the last 5 years or so. Next gen I will certainly be going back to PC. If Microsoft somehow packages a PC as their next Xbox, I might still be on this train that I got on in 2001. It will have to be affordable and support Steam. But with no exclusives, an Xbox only console has no appeal to me or most of the market anymore as sales figures have made clear since they threw in the towel
Ive been an xbox person since the og release day 1. (Though a gamer much longer)
Saying that, I dont like pc gaming all that much despite having a decent rig. For me to buy an xbox that is more pc like they need to remember the golden console rule. Keep it insanely simple. If i need to think everytime i turn it in i dont want it. If i have to press more than a couple buttons to get inti a game i dont want it. If i need to adjust settings everytime i play a new game i dont want it.
I am struggling to see how a more PC like Xbox works financially,
If MS allow other stores such as Steam on it, they’re going to lose revenue, which will only pressure an increase in the retail price of what is likely to be a costly piece of hardware. If they don’t allow other stores, well that’s not very PC like
Follow the logic:
If all Xbox games going forward are going to be on PC and Playstation, then what even is the point of buying another Xbox?
It doesn't really matter how "PC Like" the next Xbox is or not, I can buy or build a PC that will out perform it.
Or not, and just buy the next Playstation.
There's no incentive to invest in the next Xbox if there's nothing unique to offer.
That would be my preference, actually, all of the above. Of course we have no idea, but if the above speculation holds true, that’s not just what I want but what the market wants. Anyway, Xbox has always been the most PC-like console from the first generation onward.
Probably won’t get it but I’ like to know how they would implement the PC-Like behavior.
No probably not. With the way things are headed I doubt I'll ever buy any more Xbox hardware in the future, no real point based on current circumstances
If its still a console, yes I want to. And if they still integrate a disc drive and backwards compatible, I absolutely want to.
I'd have to know more about what "more PC like" would mean. Console hardware has been becoming more like PC hardware for decades. I mean you can run Windows NT on a Gamecube.
The advantages of gaming PCs are the flexibility and upgrade potentials, but I don't think we'll see that in any future console as that defeats the point in many ways.
I think it'll end up being pretty much standard PC components running a special Windows version in a console looking box. That way it'd be cheaper and easier to make and program for.
If it helps devs, it helps us. For instance, we could learn that Blizzcon 2026 brings WoW over to next gen Xbox due to it being closer to PC than ever before. We may also get a heap of games consoles may not usually get due to it being so seamless to do. I'm all for it. The PC is the biggest market of gaming (I believe), so it makes sense to cater the console in that direction. Best of both worlds.
I’ve owned every Xbox since the OG (and every PS since PS2) so regardless of what “form” the next Xbox takes I’m gonna buy it since it most likely will be the final Xbox and I want to be able to say I owned every generation of the console through Xbox’s lifetime
As long as I don't have to deal with windows, update drivers and visit multiple stores I've very much for it!
I have to admit I'd be keen on accessing steam through any such device as that's where my PC library is, so if there's no Steam and Steam launch there own box, then I'm likely to choose that.
For Microsoft, such a machine makes a lot of sense and I've been championing the idea of this since they confirmed they would release another machine. If they get it right, this could define the future of Xbox, and it doesn't matter where I play my games , I want Xbox to have a future in our industry.
I've owned Xbox console so as long as the next one is reasonably priced, has a disc drive and MS keeps backwards compatibility so I can play my old Xbox discs from previous gens, yeah, I'll consider buying it.
A living room PC gaming console, compatible with Steam. That means being able to play PS games on PC too. Plus a companion handheld device. When will Sony fans realize MS is playing long game Chess?
I'm going to pick up the handheld and the pcxbox console.
I bought my first Xbox, instead of PS2, because it was superior hardware wise and it delivered. I still keep it and never gonna sell it.
I bought Xbox 360 Halo Reach Limited Edition, not just because it's GPU was stronger than PS3's, but also games were lovely.
I bought Xbox One S because it was affordable and natively supported 4K BlueRay Movies.
I was going to but Xbox Series X but I was waiting for disk driveless model which never release in time.
So, I am waiting for next gen flagship xbox console. I am hoping that it is going to have better hardware components than PS6.
I'll gladly consider to buy it, in case it (hardware wise) it is superior and diskless model is 100 $ cheaper.
Not really. I'm a console gamer for a reason. Also for those who think that even if it has Steam integration that would mean access to Sony's 1st party PC ports, don't hold your breath. Sony will block those games from the Xbox console, so it'll be a curated version of Steam.
To me, molding PC and console gaming together as one is inevitable. This helps ensure games will ship on XB because there will be no technical barriers to ship on the platform.
$500 (or even $600) worth of gaming box that last you the whole gen & some of the next gen, access to previous consoles games, and ulfiltered access to Steam + other stores library is amazing value. Though that might not be the case especially the latter part.
If it's a decent upgrade to the current hardware, runs around $600 or so, and I can run Steam games on it, I'd probably buy it, since that's where my library already is, and GPU prices are insane right now.
No, I don’t need a PC.
