Backwards compatibility has been in the news once again this week following the announcement that Sony's refreshed PlayStation Plus service would be including select PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games as part of its "Premium" service. Of course, Xbox Game Pass already includes select original Xbox and Xbox 360 games as well.
It's well-known that Microsoft has treated backwards compatibility seriously over the past few years, although there are no further plans to add extra titles to the program from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 due to various roadblocks:
The question we want to pose to the community is, how often do you play these games? How important is backwards compatibility to you, and was it potentially even a factor in why you chose to buy an Xbox over a PlayStation console?
Here at Pure Xbox, we've built up a massive library of backwards compatible games, and we're still enjoying them to the fullest in 2022 — to be honest, we want even more! But how about you? Tell us down in the comments below.

I play them just as much as I play 'modern' games.
All the freaking time! So many legends I haven't got to yet. I love that about Xbox.
@Qphlat27 Me too.
Constantly. I revisit games I love on a regular basis, and it’s the area that Microsoft does best of the big console manufacturers.
Funny enough, I've actually been playing a backwards compatible Xbox game for the past couple weeks. I managed to find a copy of OG Xbox's Dead or Alive 3 and finally got to test out the Xbox Series X's Xbox backwards compatibility. I've been tempted to try out Lost Odyssey (which I own but have yet to play) and I'm constantly on the look-out for a copy of Blinx the Time Sweeper.
I have a handful of 360 games I'll get around to playing on my Xbox Series X at some point but a part of me ponders whether it's best to wait until I've got an expanded storage/memory card before I do so. You never know when I might need that space for a heftier Xbox Series X game (still waiting on Bright Memory Infinite's release).
Actually downloading Rare Replay as I read this article so I'm planning on playing a few.
I play BC games quite often mainly because of my backlog or games that I some how missed. Even as of late I have been playing Forza Horizon 1 as I never played that one before.
Very very rarely…in fact the only time I’m really reminded of backwards compatibility is when seeing what MS are offering with gold each month. It’s a security blanket for a ‘just in case’. It’s nice to have but not the reason I spent £450 on a new console. The only bc game I’ve ever gotten from gamepass is dead space which I liked the idea of playing through again but haven’t ever gotten round to.
Actually, and it’s kinda weird thinking of PS4 games as such, but I have definitely played more PS4 games on my ps5 than I have ps5 games. And whenever I look at my friends list those that have ps5s are usually playing PS4 games on them. And I reckon that’s a pretty common thing. So yeah, maybe bc is more important to me than I realised.
I bought the Series X in part because of my backlog of disc-based 360 games. It plays almost all of them well and the digital ones I have are all great, too. While I don't play 360 or X1 games all the time, the option is great. In short, it's been a great feature even if I don't use it all the time.
There all I play, I haven't - to my knowledge - played a single Series system only game since I got my S in December.
I was just playing some Pacman Champ DX+ yesterday. Still the best Pacman!
I don't play them that often, but I do buy a lot of them. Last ones were the FFXIII trilogy, even though they are on game pass I wanted to own them and play them at my own pace.
If we're talking og xbox and 360 titles, maybe just the one game each month. Currently playing fallout 3 for example but haven't gotten far yet. Might go on to play da2 as well sometime soon.
All the time. I always have a backwards compatible game in my rotation.
I do play a lot of my old 360 games and a handful of OG Xbox games all the time.
I would play Project Gotham' and Blur... but they aren't available and probably never will be 😓
As much as I love the games of years past... they should stay in the past. Every time i try to play an old game i realize how the times have changed and how spoiled i am with quicker loading, better graphics, and just all around better games now-a-days.
Considering I’m replaying the FF 13 games; all the time.
While I am spoiled by “modern games” and their features; one trip to my Switch library ends that issue so
The only backward compatible games I have played are the 3 Dead Space games, and the Master Chief Collection. Other than that, I'm already way too busy playing recent releases to even consider older games...
A handful of xb games
400GB+ 360 games
1TB+ xbo/xbsx games
FPS boost helps with some of the older games, too
Just depends how I feel. Last year did a play through of the Gears games, Lost Odyssey and Psychonauts. This year I have played Blue Dragon. It is nice to look at my digital library and see 4 generations of games available to play.
All the time! ✨ Back compat is one of the best features of Xbox for me. Working my way through the original Splinter Cell Trilogy 🎮
Also love playing arcade style games like Crazy Taxi, DaytonaUSA, TekkenTagTournament & FPS games like Unreal Tournament 3 & Unreal Championship 2 🎮🌈🚀
Not that much though a lot of this is to do with Switch getting lots of 3rd party ports and remasters from OG Xbox and 360. Most recent situation was a bit before the February 2022 Nintendo Direct I considered getting the Portal games via backwards compatibility on Xbox but when the Portal collection was announced for Switch in that Direct, I decided to wait for the Switch version.
I do think backwards compatibility is extremely important though.
I play Digital Binary and Gears Of War up to 5 of course on backwards compatibility. I’ve got some other Xbox One games too I play. And some old Xbox Arcade games I play also. Love it!
@BBB I just beat Sacred 2 recently. Did you like it?
I rarely use my now series S for anything other than back compat games as i most play on PS and few 1st part games on xbox are for me. Think only Starfield this year will be the only new game for the system which works as i can just use reward points to get for free
All the time, but I don't really view them as being any different to modern games. I don't really regard the Xbox (series S) as backwards compatible as such - more a machine that plays everything if that makes sense. If I want to play SSX3 or Portal 2 then I just play them, I don't think of them as BC specifically.
Depending on how you count it (Do remasters of old games count? Are we talking any system/console or just Xbox? Where is the generation line for PC? What about "new" games that are actually full conversions of old games?), I've played somewhere between 35 and 55 games and DLCs from generations prior to Xbox One/PS4 in the last 12 months. So, very often?
@SacredPYRO Lost Odyssey, Psychonauts, Blue Dragon... all excellent reasons to spend some time in the past. LO and BD are in my 'must play' list. Beat Psychonauts waaaaay back during it's original Xbox release. Playing part 2 now.
I’ve played 3 games in BC. The Dead Space trilogy and that’s it.
I pretty much have my old Xbox One X dedicated towards backwards compatibility duty. It's where I got all my original Xbox and 360 classics, as well as anything I really like from the Xbox One that never got XS enhanced. I love that setup, thanks to HDMI pass-though it's also what I use for cable box duty.
From a consumer point of view and moral point it is great. If you have purchased say a 360 or Xbox one game you can still use and play it on your series x.
Basically the game goes to your new console with you. That can never be a bad thing or a thing to complain about.
For me personally I hardly use the feature maybe once in a blue moon.
I’m more of a once I’ve played and finished a game I want to move onto the new big games for the new console. The old games I wanted to play I purchased and played on the original console they were intended for.
Xbox have done great with the feature though but need to step with some new big AAA stuff from their studios.
If what we see so far this year, we would go a whole year and to the end of this year until we see just one big AAA game Starfield. If that happens that is a very poor showing for new big AAA games for our shiny new 12tflop console. In fact if that is it for 2022 it really is a bit of a disgrace considering it will be year 2 at November 2022.
Maybe it's just my age and the fact that I've been playing the same games over and over and over again...but the nostalgia is gone. I played Mario when it first released. Grew up playing Wolfenstein 3d and eventually designing levels for DooM. Played Street Fighter II in the arcades. Warcraft and Diablo on the pc. You name it, I played. But it gets to a point where I just have to say, been there, done that.
I'm not 12 anymore, where I could sit and watch the same movie or show over and over and over again. I want something new and original.
That's why I just purchased an Xbox Series X and downloaded Cyberpunk 2077. While it isn't completely original, it's kind of what I imagined, as the future of gaming...some odd 35 years ago.
I play fight night champion almost every day
I bought my first Xbox because of backwards compatibility. That says it all. That only gets better knowing that I keep all my games as I upgrade. Xbox is the best console environment because of all these consumer-friendly features.
If it’s Xbox one game on the series s then i play it often
What counts as BC? I'm new to Xbox so I've played a handful of 360 titles and a bunch of Xbox one games...many after they got nice enhancements just by luck. I still have to play through the gears franchise so luckily it's all available. As a non hardcore gamer I can say that i really appreciate not having to own multiple device's to play these games as i would honestly never do that and would miss out on a ton of stuff. Guessing that's where the remasters and rereleases would have to come in but even then i would never pay full price for an old game to play on a new system. It's definitely a very convenient option that just allows me to play games without any hassle.
In about 15 months I've played:
Dungeon Seige 3, Dead space 1 - 3, Fable 1 and 2, Dante's Inferno, splinter cell, Panzer Dragoon Orta and Risen 2. I've probably forgotten a few and really like the feature.
I play back compat games pretty often and it helped me play a lot of games i wouldn't have normally played. The Mass Effect trilogy (before the legendary edition), Splinter Cell, Fable, Witcher 2, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and a bunch of others i missed out on.
I would like to do it more often, but because of time constraint I can't, my kids play a lot of them, like all the old lego games.
I play them all the time! The games may be old but they’re new to me! It doesn’t matter how old the game is, if it’s something I like, I’ll play it!
What do we count as backwards compatible?
If we're counting Xbox One then most days.
If we're talking Xbox 360 then once a week on average.
If only OG Xbox then not often, but i'm glad it's there when needed.
Would play them more if they added more titles. Still waiting for Condemned 2 and Blur. I can but dream
I recommend the Witcher 2: Assassins of kings if you haven't played it yet.
Much more so then newer games, I use my Series S primarily for playing these older games such as Rare Replay, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Dead or Alive 2 and Radiant Silvergun. For modern titles I have a good gaming PC
It's absolutely not something I use a lot, but when I do use it I'm very grateful to have it. More options will always trump fewer. Its also good for the sake of preservation.
Loads. Absolutely loads. I don’t have the fascination with only playing new games hat some gamers have.
Ive always got at least one or two back compat games in my currently played titles.
It will be intresting if and when the Activison acquisition goes through if we will see some more games added from their catalogue of games from the 360 and OG Xbox.
I have a group dedicated to games from the 360 that I need to play/finish.
And lately I've made EDF 2017 my game of choice to have a few blasts while up in bed before I settle down. I somehow lost my old game save (even though I made sure to transfer all my saves to the cloud when the BC program started) and I have a lot of catching up to do before I can carry on, and hopefully beat, the harder levels.
Play SSX 3 more than anything else. It’s constantly in my rotation and in last year I’ve completed more BC games than modern games
It's why I love the Xbox Series X. FPS Boost, auto HDR, it's a beautiful thing.
Never. Just not interested in old games when there's so many current ones I haven't the time to play. I'm not suggesting that old games cant be brilliant - quite the reverse, but we are blessed to be in a time when there are more interesting titles than I have time for, so I'll always pick new.
I preserve the older generations of games (more than 2 gens old) as its part of my past and one of my great passions, but I seldom see the need to play one. Sometimes I'll dig out a schumup from the past for 15 minutes of fun, but its a rare thing. I do admire those that still play their favourites - I'm always too ready to move on!
Some of my favorite games are the older retro games. Specially the racing and arcade ones.
Bought my Xbox Series S to play Cities Skyline and some 360 titles.
I love the back compatibility. I am like 50/50 current games to old games on Xbox. I’m currently playing the Orange box to replay Half-Life 2 for the first time since I played it in the OG Xbox. Still amazing today. I’ve come to the conclusion that games are games. New or old they are still fun. So now instead of trying to keep up with everything I just play what is fun what ever that may be. I’ve actually played more on my XBOneX lately than I have on my PS5. Mostly back compat games. Plus new stuff on game pass is just too convenient.
I wish they would bring Bubble Bobble back. Switch and PS5 have it. I used to play this for hours I the arcades on Barry Island
