There was a lot going on at the Xbox Showcase last Sunday including reveals for the likes of Gears of War: E-Day and DOOM: The Dark Ages, so to a degree, the re-reveal of Fable was perhaps a little bit overlooked in general.
But hey, we've got a release window now! Fable is officially expected to release on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S at some point in 2025, and for a game that we've been so hyped about for so long, that's extremely good news.
The latest trailer (seen above) gave us our greatest look yet at what Fable is turning out to be, with a decent amount of (what appears to be) raw gameplay sprinkled in. At least from a visual standpoint, it's a stunner so far.
Fable's biggest challenge is trying to live up to the expectations of a franchise that dominated back in the Xbox 360 days though, and that's where Playground Games really has their work cut out for them. Fable could be good, but unless it's really great, you can already imagine the negative comparisons that are likely to crop up post-launch.
So, how are you feeling about Fable after the Xbox Games Showcase? Tell us in the comments below.

I think it's looking great from what we've seen still not sure if it will come out next year I hope so?
100% hyped if I can choose a male protagonist or even better, create my own.
0% if not.
This was my most anticipated game when it was revealed for the first time, seriously, second only to anything Rare, but I'm not sold on the protagonist (?) now.
@Lup ^^This
What’s the point in Fable if you can’t create your own narrative? That was half the fun of the Fable 2 and what still sets it apart from more modern RPGs.
It looks like they're just making a generic fantasy rpg
I was hyped last year seeing Richard Ayaode in the trailer and now even more hyped hearing Super Hans.
Gameplay looked good too. I think they'll nail the British humour that Fable is known for and I can't bloody wait.
It seems to be shaping up ok.
But being honest unlike years ago any game by any studio should be approached with some cautionary.
There was a time certain studios, certain games you just knew, day one no doubt this will be amazing, run well and bug free ish.
But not nowadays, caution is advised.
i think the devs are trolls and won't touch fable without a character creator.
I've only played 2 and I quite enjoyed it, so kinda looking forward to see what comes out. Style is cool, but would be good to have more details about the "real game"
@Lup
I sincerely hope we are stuck with the female character shown in the trailers. I don't want people who care about outward looks or gender of a character to have fun
I thought it looked fabulous! Fable and Perfect Dark are two of my most anticipated Xbox Studios games. Super hyped 😁.
I got the feeling that the "protagonist" they've been showing may not be the character we play as. Just my thoughts.
@OldGamer999
Playground Games have a stellar reputation with their games, albeit they're pedigree are the fantastic Forza Horizon games. I trust they'll deliver 🙂.
@ZuneTattooGuy
I sincerely hope you can create your own character so everyone can have fun, no matter how that person perceives themselves.
@ZuneTattooGuy That's why Mass Effect Andromeda is the greatest game ever! Because, I don't care about outward looks of a character ;P
@FarmDog08
That would be a cool "twist"! Wouldn't mind that at all.
Think it's gunna be great 😎 think literally every game got be excited to play near enough form the show 🙂 I usually play indies and smaller games but with some of these games they showed think gunna be playing some bigger AAA games aswell now😂
It looks great. Really like the cameos.
I’m hoping we can create whatever ugly character we want though.
I got my Series X recently. It's my first Xbox, so I've never played a Fable game before.
That said, I am absolutely stoked to play this one. Looks great!
@ZuneTattooGuy Honestly? Yeah, same.

This game looks like it's going to be awesome. I vaguely recall playing the first one on my younger brother's Xbox back in the day but I've really never gone far in it....so I'll say I've never played one. I'll have to play through them as folks are speculating that the sister of someone from the first games is the evil villain? Also the Don't care if we play as the female on the game, seen some arguing that they should have multiple characters to choose from.
I've observed something if the Protagonist is woman and looks good and have good physical shape so called "Gamers" have no problem. But once the female Protagonist doesn't have those attributes the moaning and groaning becomes pathetic. That being said I'm optimistic for this game as the brief bits of dialogues we got It's evident there's the British humor present. And I do hope they give us the chance to become whatever I want to become. A narcissistic bad person or a saint.
Really looking forward to this one. Im such a sucker for fantasy adventure games like this.
@LadyCharlie welcome to the Xbox community. You'll be more than satisfied with your console and the games...as long you keep a healthy distance from the internet where people will make up a Xbox Crisis every week.
@Tonmoy
I can speak only for myself, but I don't care about how hot the character is.
I like creating my own character when it comes to RPGs, that's half the fun.
And if it is a game I really like, maybe I play again with a different character or sex and try the different romances.
I also just want to point out how I'm not trying to diminish anyone's enjoyment of the game (just asking for choice) vs how I don't deserve to have fun because I don't think like someone else does. 😂
You know Hogwart’s is the most current Fable game. That was a joy to play!
@Aniscape
It was a crime how that game didn't receive even one award. It was magical experience. Might play it again soon.
It looks good so far. There hasn't been a ton of details yet but everything shown so far looks great. Maybe they will feature it in a dev direct in January.
@Sol4ris
Totally agree FH5 is probably one of the most AAA games on my series x. A master class.
It’s probably just me with recent releases all round over the last couple of years.
Looks great to me.
Obviously it will feel and play different since not Lionhead. I'm optimistically cautious at this point.
Haven't watched anything for it after that horrible previous trailer.
Generic looking environment.
Ugly characters.
No sense of fun or urgency.
In the showcase trailer around the 52-58 second mark is my clearest indication this will indeed be a Fable game. With fans and non fans. “It’s like a fan club, but we hate you” loved that bit. And also looked like they showed an empty Heroes guild. So all told just a small glimpse but starting to feel like Fable. 🥰
People caring about playing as male or female. In a make believe game.
I'm sure it'll have a character creator. The "Miivatar" is the entire backbone of the Fable franchise, right down to the "Second Life Sim" aspects. If it's not that, it's not fable, and the whole project will have been a sham. Whatever they're setting up the trailer "hero" for can't be a narrative player character, assuming the team has played a Fable game and gets its whole Molyneaux-ist design.
@FarmDog08 This. In the trailer they even said something about the "hero" and she "made all the wrong choices" or something...made me think maybe she's actually the former hero turned villain.
@NEStalgia
Character in trailer is Jack! Origin story?!? Can’t wait to find out what is and isn’t
@NEStalgia I haven't played the Fable games, so not sure if he is a returning character, but Humphrey felt very shady to me and the girl seemed like his right hand and equally as shady.
@FarmDog08 Interesting...
@FarmDog08 Yeah, I think these trailers we've been getting are a super elaborate trolling job setting up a false world building twist by launch. It's all very clever, and so very Fable! Everything we're hearing is the truth according to some clearly very self-serving narrators...whatever we're being told by them is all lies for sure, and we have no idea who the girl that's the "hero" really is! Really a unique hype approach, only Hideo Kojima has successfully done such elaborate trolling, setting up a fake company with fake trailers just to troll for MSGV.
@Aniscape I didn't even notice that...interesting!
@Banjo-
Interesting indeed…what appears to be the villain showing up at end of trailer may actually be the Hero’s sister from the first Fable? Ah man…now the wait just became that much more difficult!
@LadyCharlie Get gamepass ultimate and download diablo 4 and add me as a friend.
@Aniscape Yep, trolling would be very Fable. I admit that I was paying more attention to the graphics and voice acting that were both well done, but now I'm intrigued. I'm looking forward to a Fabled Fable. 😊
@NEStalgia Yes. Something just seems "off" with the current trailer, in a good way though.
@RadioHedgeFund You picked male or female (I think, I always pick male by default) and doing evil things or good things changed your appearance. I don't need to create a character in every game. These days, there may the option or a male option. Not really my concern for this game, as he will probably look goofier than the girl character.
Just one question about this theory, then why does the trailer show her in what looks like gameplay footage, running and fighting in the typical third-person view? Not just in this third trailer but in the second (the one with the guy wearing glasses), as well.
@FarmDog08 Yeah, and it's interesting how they're doing it as this running series, every showcase we get this new trailer of some new retired hero somehow connected with the "hero" girl, and everything seems deceptive about it all. And their stories can't all be true. Really clever marketing "for the fans" I think. It's maybe a bit too subversive and people seem to miss the brilliance of it.
@Banjo- Just because that's "gameplay footage" doesn't mean that's not gameplay footage made just for the trailer footage to show the mechanics (and further mislead on the false narrative being told from the PoV of the maybe ill purposed characters), but isn't true to the story/character you'll play. Kind of like how ACIII opened with you playing Haytham but that's obviously not how things turned out.
Doesn't really feel like Fable without Molyneux, but looks ok in its own right.
@NEStalgia I'm all confused. I watched the second trailer again and she beats a much bigger guy wearing glasses at the end. I also watched the first trailer again, where poor fairy is eaten and the ending says, "Not all stories have happy endings, but yours has yet to be written." That ending sounds like choose your hero. That could be the most important clue.
Assassin's Creed III is a good example as far as stories go, but I don't feel that there is a swop here.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I understand having a preference, I just don't get the people being absolute about it. When there is a choice, I pick male every time, automatically. It is not even a thought, more like I'm answering a question about myself on a questionnaire. Now if the main character is female (Lara Croft, Joanna Dark, even the dreaded Kat) that is not a big deal.
@NEStalgia I've got MGS2 vibes myself. Something seems just too on the nose to me about the marketing.
Looked Amazing and really captured the British Humour I expect from a Fable game - looking forward to playing this!#
I didn't overlook it - but I also don't get excited with a plethora of games coming in the rest of 2024 without considering games without a release date coming sometime next year...
Fable looks great — looking forward seeing more (or even playing the game) a year from now.
Not much to feel. Even gameplay trailers (which this really wasn't much of) don't really give you anything... besides hype.
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Banjo- I really can't imagine they're really setting up "defined hero girl" as a behind the shoulder walking simulator narrative player character for a Fable game. And these trailers seem too deliberate in tone to be "what you see is what you get."
The bigger guy with the glasses was, like in the new trailer set up as someone with some kind of history regarding her, though, so the theme is consistent. Doesn't mean she's truly the hero protag though. Could even just be an allied character or party member, but something just seems really too leash-leading about how they're setting her up and what her character is. She's something in the game, but I don't believe she's the player, and I feel like there's definitely a twist coming somewhere about that. They've spent too much time setting up a vague "hero" that doesn't seem setup to be the Player.
@NEStalgia I think I understand you, in the context of how this game is marketed, it would be a spoiler and even silly if she was the protagonist, right? So she isn't.
I never played Fable 1-3.
I loved Witcher 3, despite not being able to choose my character. Same with countless other games...
I guess I can understand the anger if people expected to be able to create their characters, but this character is voiced, like Geralt, so I don't get the huge anger. I can't wait for this, it looks great to me!
@Lup not looking to start a fight, but did you not enjoy Witcher 3 because Geralt was a pre-chosen character? I just don't get the hatred for this character??
@Dimey
You're being polite, so I don't see why this would start a fight.
I did enjoy The Witcher 3, yeah, but since those games are based on books I don't think it's a good example.
I prefer when it's like in Dragon Age, where you can choose your class/sex/appearance/and even your name.
I get more easily attached to a character that way and easier to feel like it's yourself in that world.
Even the new AC games which took a more Witcher 3-style let you at least choose between female and male and then romance whoever you want.
I'm just asking for the possibility of choice which I think would make the most people happy.
It's just a personal preference though, not trying to push my way of thinking unto others.
A lot of discussion about character creator. Fable never had one. First Fable there was no choice and then for 2 and 3 was either brother or sister to choose. The hero journey is what changes you depending on the choices. So not that important to me if you start as male or female or choice of either. There will be some story element/reason why you are who you play with connections to the world.
I will say that regardless of who you control i agree with others this feels like something is off about these trailers even the first one. The giant didn’t feel evil but this “hero” killed him and was very blasé about it at the end not even finishing her sandwich. Almost feels like they are trying to be hero’s but not. Hard to explain. Anyway, loving all this discussion about the game!
@Aniscape Paradoxically, the only disrespectful ones on the live chat and here were defending her, but yes, this thread is one of the few that contain a deeper and interesting conversation like something we would have in real life.
I thought exactly the same as you when I watched the first trailer again today. The smaller girl seems the evil one in that rivalry, that obviously started before that encounter. The bigger guy (I use these adjectives because I'm not sure if he's a giant or she's an elf or both) doesn't seem evil but a victim. The fairy in the first trailer doesn't seem evil and her fate is fatal, black humour of course, but they are trying to tell us that nothing is like it seems. Lots of possibilities, characters and different points of view in the trailers... 😮
It was the game I was most impressed with. Tho it didn’t show a ton of gameplay, what was shown looked phenomenal. I was excited for Fable, but after that show, it catapulted to my top 3 most anticipated. Literally can’t wait.
@Trmn8r so there's a character creator in Andromeda...
@Lup fair enough, I take your point...
its a tricky one as some games like GTA, Witcher, where the character(s) is/are voiced, it really adds something for me, but equally I can see the appeal of creating and role playing a character. though you then lose that voice acted part to it... can't please us all I guess!
I've been gaming for 35 odd years now but fairly new to RPG's... but I've not found many games where you can truly role play your character. Loved starfield but that seemed to push you down the good path at every turn, regardless of how you created your character. conversely, Witcher 3 the character was pre-defined, but your choices really impacted the world around you...
hoping Avowed covers all bases in this regard!!
Oh my goodness, maybe they were trolling? At the end she says that no one will stand in her way, then they are in the forest and someone literally stands in their way. Seems like that's YOU.
@Aniscape they don't actually care. It's just a reaction against the lady in the trailer.
@LostInBlue0 And that matches the first trailer, "but yours (your story) has yet to be written." The plot thickens.
Is she the one that killed all the heroes that came before you?
Everything about the game feels like a top notch experience… gives me totally the Fable vibe and very excited. I would agree that not all as it seems from the trailers…
@LikelySatan yes... I know...
@ZuneTattooGuy man, you must be fun at parties...
Removed - inappropriate; user is banned
@LikelySatan true enough. By the way…fun name you have 😈
@Banjo- Exactly! I think they're kind of teasing the back story in a stort of subversive ongoing campaign of reveals. We won't know the real deal until nearer launch, we seem like we're being taken on a serious of interviews of dubious individuals telling it their own way. It's really clever.
@JokerBoy422 Your appearance in every fable game (besides the first) up to now has been a binary choice that is later altered by good/bad choices. The rest of what you said was too stupid to respond to.
@theduckofdeath
Dreaded Kat?
@JokerBoy422 You can't choose your character in Metal Gear Solid. In fact MGS2 had one of the biggest (maybe one of the first) big outcrys when Raiden became the main protagonist.
I'm a bloke. Wife, kids and typical nuclear family role as the main breadwinner. I still pick female shepherd in Mass Effect as the voice acting performance is better, and she fills the role throughout the game flawlessly.
Diversity isn't important in games honestly but having a female lead isn't that big of a deal. It's a make believe World. Why does anyone care, as long as the game is good and the character suits the gameplay and environment?
I like character creation and I also hate it.
Simple is better.
Animal Crossing is good (somewhat)
Skyrim is closer to the bad side.
Fallout 4 not enough decent choices.
Fallout 76, absolutely atrocious. I couldn't get through the character creation.
I like the way Mass Effect did it.
Story based on a character, but some freedom.
XenoBlade X had a good one too! And I liked the way they did Armor Upgrades.
@themcnoisy
I'm married twice over, three kids.
If the game has a Male Protag, fine. But if there's a choice, I choose the chick. Even though it's animated/fake/CGI/whatever, I'd rather be "staring" at a girls behind than a dudes for 5+ to 500+ hours
@LikelySatan
For me, the Main Character has to be at least somewhat attractive.
There are times for character creation and times when I prefer a set character. Bethesda games, in particular Elder Scrolls, it’s a must. Games like Fable, I am perfectly fine with just picking a sex for the character.
@Spider-Kev interesting. What kind of guys are you more attracted to? Are you more into the twink thing or the bear thing? Do you prefer your protagonist with huge, rippling muscles, or more of a waifish dude? Chest hair or no?
@Spider-Kev Kat from Gears 4 & 5. Many people complained about her.
I just want Theresa’s story wrapped up.
Hyped, but only if you can make you own character again or choose between sexe (Male/female)
I'll wait until we know a lot more about the game before I start having any real interest. I'm glad we've seen a little of what looks like could be the actual game, but before that was all CGI teasers which mean nothing at all. I only played the original fable at a friend's house so I don't have much nostalgia for the franchise.
The character is a non issue imo and choice or not I really don't see why it matters as both options have benefits. Full character creation is cool as you get to make something fun, and usually i will just pick which gender i feel suits the charcter / setting better. If the character is set then I find that often leads into better more in depth back story. You can go the Cyberpunk route and have a generic character with choice but it was an illusion as it had no real impact and meant you had very little back story to V.
For Fable I will probably give it a go but am curious to see if its improved as I found the original trilogy lacking due to being very short. Plus I felt they got worse as the series went on, but that was entirely because I prefer sword and sorcery and when they moved time on it felt like the game lost its magic.
It looks really promising, but I would have liked to see extended gameplay. We still don't really know exactly how this plays other than a few short clips and I find it hard to get excited about games without that. It's why Doom was my favourite of the show.
Granted, that is hard to do in a showcase, there's not enough time and it could ruin the pacing. But that's what I liked about the old showcase extended format where you could spend a bit more time with the devs and show a longer section of game so you can actually get a idea what the gameplay loop is. Maybe next year.
Removed - trolling/baiting
As others have mentioned we need to see more gameplay but the storytelling so far seems on point with some great cameos. Unlike seemingly many others, I like the look of the protagonist and don't care if there isn't a character creator and from the small snippets of gameplay this looks very promising. It's certainly very high on my wanted list
Removed - flaming/arguing
Very happy with what we've seen. Not bothered about the protagonists gender, race, age - create a character would be nice but it's not a game changer.
Look pretty good in graphics and tone. Would have liked to see more gameplay. I'm very confident Playground can deliver a good game, I'm just terrified it won't hit a big audience or something about it will put players off, and MS will swoop in and shut down Playground.
@themcnoisy I never said Metal Gear Solid was a role playing game... Fable is.
Looks like trash, with the ugliest protagonist they could intentionally create. The comedy is cringe and they haven't shown anything regarding mechanics yet. I liked the original Fable. Not interested in the 2024 DEI-approved reinterpretation. Maybe they'll show something eventually that will change my opinion, but not holding out hope.

@JokerBoy422
Technically, all games are RPGs
You are playing the role of the character in the game.
@Grail_Quest
The character models in the original Fable games were not what I would call conventionally attractive either
@LadyCharlie get game pass and play the 1st 2 games so you will see more of why people love Fable
@ZuneTattooGuy Hi Zune! I disagree. The women you could woo as marriage candidates were indeed designed to be attractive... and then there was Lady Grey.
Also, not a fair comparison, as artists were not able to achieve 1:1 translation of their vision due to the technical limitations of the hardware at the time. That's why there was such a disparity between say, how Joanna Dark's in game model looked (like a male version of Enya) versus how she was portrayed in the manual.
There are no such limitations or excuses today, meaning that the recent offensive uglification of women in games is an intentional and deliberate choice.
People are free to support that design philosophy if they wish. More power to them, I say! But people are also free to not support it. I fall within that camp.
Looking forward to the game, baffled by all the dudes whining about the appearance of the female characters. It’s so creepy.
@Spider-Kev Oh. But you only like attractive protags? So I guess you are choosing to be attracted to the male protagonists of the games you play. How fun. Not many people are able to just switch it on and off like that. Good for you!
@Ryu_Niiyama They only want to play as a hot chick in Fable, the game where you fart in people's faces as a jok....ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
I really enjoyed this trailer. I was not a big fan of the previous one last year, it just didnt feel like fable to me, but I got a bit more of the brit humour I was looking for in this one and generally felt it had much more of the feel I would want.
Impossible to tell very much as we have so little insight into gameplay, its essentially still a concept advert, but I'm now looking forward to it. Good devs, being given plenty of time most likely equals a good game and I look forward to finding out more.
I think a lot of people will look Silly when the character creator is showcased.
Or it will be me that looks silly becase it is not included lol. I personally do not have a problem with a female protagonist and hope the ones that do are reacting to a missing feature and not the sec of a character.
Either way I will play and from the looks of it have a freaking blast.
