Last year, Microsoft launched Xbox Game Pass Standard, phasing out its 'Console' tier of the subscription service at the same time. When it was revealed, we questioned the need for its existence, especially given how great Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is and the extras that are included in that service. However, with Game Pass Standard seemingly growing at a faster and faster rate these days, we think it's becoming a more appealing option in 2025.
As of late, our Pure Xbox Game Pass roundups are being flooded with new GP Standard arrivals. Of course, these aren't day one launches — that's not what the mid-tier service is targeting — but more and more of the GP Ultimate library seems to be moving over at the moment. Today's library refresh included five Standard titles and just two additions to the main Ultimate library!
As we broke down in a recent guide, Xbox Game Pass Standard is $5 a month cheaper than Ultimate following the latter tier's recent price hike. While you do get a lot for your extra five bucks — EA Play, first-party launches and Xbox Cloud Gaming access — $5 every month when there's a million subscriptions out there these days isn't something to sniff at. It's a fairly big bump when added up over the course of a few years!
Another thing, is that there are just so many games to play these days, that it can be hard to keep track of every new day one launch - let alone get around to actually playing them! As ardent Xbox followers we of course use GP Ultimate to keep on top of things, but as someone who would just want access to a good library of games plus online play? Game Pass Standard is becoming a more appealing offer for that sort of player.
Anyway, we want to know what you think to all of this! Tell us via the polls down below which GP tier you're subscribed to, and whether you're liking the look of Standard as we head into 2025.

I gotta have the access to pc game pass and cloud. I have zero interest in downgrading.
I'm on ultimate and I'll probably stay on that tier for good the value is too good I remember the days when it would cost about the same to rent a single videogame for a week from the video store back in the day so hundreds of games I can potentially play for a month for that price is to good for me to pass by!
GPU since the start or whatever it was called back in the day.
GPU until March 2027 paid.
Play too many EA games and also have pc game pass for my legion go which works well alongside it. With the new rewards system i can make the difference up with pc game pass rewards now. Have no intention of downgrading.
First 16 of us to vote are all GPU... 🤣
I've been on GPU for about 5 or 6 years now. I'm very happy with it as it is my primary way of playing games. I don't buy a lot of games anymore (2 or 3 a year) so this way I never run out of stuff to play. Needless to say, I'm very content with this generation of gaming in my early 40s and I've been gaming since the mid 80s.
No ill stick with ultimate only just brought my xbox and haven't touched my ps5 pro since
I had my son on GPU, but with many of the games that we play together being on Standard (Astroneer, Deep Rock, Grounded, etc) I was able to drop him down to GP Standard and just buy some of the other games available on GPU for his account while they were on sale.
That said, if he plays on our main console, he is able to access my GPU sub and try new games. So while I have no intention of downgrading, I would just say that Gamepass Core is great for another family member in the same house and much more valuable than Xbox Live Gold used to be.
The sole purpose of GP standard is to get you to buy GPU lol.
It started like play online and GPU day 1 games after like a year or so. But The biggest trick they did is not every game from GPU eventually makes it to standard. That nuance makes this tier absolutely useless.
If it would be automated process like 12 months pass => here is indy for example. Then maybe.
And yes GPU can still be stacked by buying cards on sales via various retailers or concerted with 50% discount thru GP core.
I personally paid full price only couple of times over the past 5 years of using the service.
If they cancel all stacking/GP core conversion and raise price - that would be a good question in continuing. I am convinced they do that in next couple of years
GPU is the only one of real value.
So assuming it keeps on staying reasonable priced I’ll stay subscribed.
If not I’m just going to start dipping in as and when.
@FarmDog08 even without exclusivity if pipeline of games is great then xbox worth it for GP alone. Basically a math question: if you play enoughbgames with service you can save up and buy other platforms for exclusives or buy more games outside of GP on xbox.
I still think unfortunately GP and xbox are niche, people are not aware of and mainstream casuals are not interested in “another $20 subscription” while they want to play specific game like gta or elden ring or another hype game.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner my cut off point is $25 USD/m. That means you need 4 full price games on a release to break even and you dont even own those.
Thats assuming they also cut all GPU stacks/conversions from core.
I am good till jan 2027 and will see then too.
For now its too good to pass by.
I saves enough cash with it to invest in other systems and exclusives
Have always used ultimate, especially when you can get good deals from places like CDKeys or Shopto. Wouldn’t think of downgrading right now with games like Avowed coming out soon.
MS rewards are still more than enough to pay for Ultimate on a monthly basis so definitely haven't considered. Cloud is a major selling point as well, doubt I'll downgrade in the future
The only GP Switch I'd consider making is to PC, it's cheaper but still has the new games.
No, I paid for three years in advance and I’m mainly here for newer AAA games.
GPU is the tier to have. I turn mine on and off depending on when a new game I want to play comes out. On for Indy, back off until Avowed.
Only a $5 difference isn't enough for me to want to downgrade and not get access to day 1 first party releases. 2025 should have 4 to 5 of those releases alone so I see way more value in keeping the Ultimate sub.
@Millionski like you I still have points etc to buy it.
But on the day you see Netflix yet again rising prices, sega potentially looking at a subscription, some will have to give.
For now GPU continues to be a good purchase. So assuming long as that continues I’m in.
I currently switch between core and ultimate. Staying on core to see how much points I get in 3 months. Might stay on ultimate after that if the recent changes allow me to top up monthly with reward points.
I remember getting my 12 month XBOX Live subscription for £25 off CD Keys when I first joined, then when I upgraded to GP Ultimate, it only cost me a £1... is that still a thing?
No, haven't thought about switching as it still offers great value to me. As an enthusiast who typically plays around 20+ games on Game Pass each year, and tries many more, i'm quids in. I also use cloud and local streaming on Steam Deck.
But If I was more casual and played a lot less I would think about it as prices have crept up.
Nope, I have Ultimate until 2027 but I’m gonna let it ran out and I’m not gonna renew, it’s become too expensive for my particular use case as I still tend to buy the games I like the most.
I'm on ultimate right now but will be on nothing after October. Just don't get enough use out of the sub.
I’m on Ultimate and try to get as much of it through MS Rewards as I can and anything else through CDKeys. I wouldn’t drop to standard as I tend to just unsubscribe for a few months if there’s nothing on GPU I fancy and let a backlog build up.
I’m currently on Ultimate with about 9 months left as part of the Xbox All Access program. Seemed like a good deal as Starfield was set to launch.
Anyway, once that 24 months of Game Pass Ultimate lapses, I would probably go after the cheapest option available. On PlayStation, the Essentials option is more than enough.
Not in the least. The extra few quid for SO much more seems silly not to fork out.
@FatGuyInLilCoat I think its 9 big games at least. 6 games 1st party and 3rd party we have expedition 33, wuchang and atomfall
@IOI i dont know how is it expensive if you use stacking/core conversion. Its like <$10 a month. Basically 1 game+ online to break even.
Another story if they increase the price by 2027 and cut off all conversions/stacking. At lets say $25 USD full price its not worth it for me
Never. I’m there for the Day 1 exclusives. When there’s not enough Day 1 games that interest me, I drop my sub.
It’s literally significantly cheaper to convert Core to Ultimate rather than subscribe monthly to Standard. All it requires is a year or two (or three) of Core paid upfront. Standard is not worth the cost at all when Ultimate ends up being cheaper!
@Millionski you are 100% correct. Forgot about those, and looking forward to expedition 33 and Wuchang. First party i always have a wait and see approach now with MS. They've been wanting to release a first party game every quarter for a couple years now and I haven't seen it happen. But I'm very optimistic this will finally be the year.
I switched to Game Pass Core earlier this month after being on Game Pass Ultimate for the past four years. Financially, it made the most sense for me to be on Game Pass Core and to buy the occasional game, despite what I'll be missing out on with Game Pass Ultimate.
@Millionski That isn’t as cheap anymore, they changed conversion rates and upped the prices so even by looking for cheap codes online and conversion tricks I don’t find it worth it since there’s entire months where I don’t Game Pass, I basically only got it to save on playing day one titles as I pretty much bought every other game I liked.
I have GPU. My son plays mostly on his SX and the games that are on GPU or free. We rarely buy games. If it wasnt for him I probably would have been on and off depending on what games I would like to play but as it is its good value
3 months of Ultimate is £22.
Have paid that or very similar for a long time.
Wouldn't even consider downgrading to a lesser service.
Ultimate is the ultimate choice for me.
No! Still the best subscription deal in gaming as far as I'm concerned.
To me the main advantage of Ultimate is the day 1 games which gives me a chance to check out new games to see if they are worth checking out on game pass or even possibly buy the game when it's on sale. Standard is ok, but there isn't enough games that I really want to play that I don't already own.
@IOI $10/m is still cheap. Conversion 2:1 and you can get core for 60 still at bestbuy/cd keys. Talking about USA/Canada though. Its actually would be around $8. Yeah before they nerfed it was like $6 or so. At this price point its a no-brainer.
If you buy games then you dont need sub at all or just the cheapest tier for online access.
@mac_da_man see that conversion as I mentioned. its could be cheaper than on/off method. It equates to 5 months for full price GPU.
No way. Ultimate or nothing, I dont find standard appealing.
@Millionski thanks, I’ll look in to it 🙂
Gamepass Ultimate used to be worth subscribing to every month but ever since the latest price increase and the introduction of Standard, we have been seeing less and less games each month vs the amount of games being moved over to standard. It's very tempting to start subscribing to Standard and only paying extra for Ultimate when there is a big day one release coming up that I want to play.
I wish they would have an “Xbox live” tier just for online gameplay. I truly don’t care for subsidized gamepass despite it being a great deal no matter how much it cost despite those that complain about the “high” cost.
Ultimate all the way, you are allowed to buy Subscriptions from 3rd party's on Xbox below the rrp price and cheaper than other consoles higher tiers despite getting all the Day One games etc and also being able to play them on PC|handhelds at No extra cost.
@Vaako007 exactly. I have the games I like, I just want to be able to play online!
