Later this week, The First Berserker: Khazan joins Atomfall in releasing for Xbox on March 27th - and ahead of what's turning out to be a pretty big day for new releases, early reviews are now starting to hit the web for The First Berserker: Khazan.
So, we'll gather a bunch of them up here to give you a general consensus of what to expect from this new action-RPG; heading to Xbox consoles later this week. Oh, and remember - there's a free demo for this one available now on Xbox if you'd like to try the game out for yourself!
PlayStation Universe (9.5/10)
"The First Berserker: Khazan is greatness from nothingness personified. Neople has done what so many have tried to do in the past. If TFB Khazan is not on your map, then, well, you need a new map. From brutal yet manageable combat to fantastic level and monster designs, Khazan aims high and hits every target it finds."
Noisy Pixel (9/10)
"The First Berserker: Khazan is a masterclass in action combat, delivering thrilling boss fights, diverse level design, and tight mechanics that rival the genre’s best. While the narrative and side characters falter in depth, the fluid progression, customizable skill trees, and satisfying difficulty curve make this a standout soul-like experience—even for players unfamiliar with the Dungeon Fighter Online universe."
The Gamer (8/10)
"I suspect that most fans of the Soulslike genre will have a great time with The First Berserker: Khazan - especially if their primary focus is on the gameplay. It has some thoughtful approaches to easing frustration while maintaining that rewarding, Soulsian challenge. The First Berserker: Khazan may not be on the level of a Bloodborne or a Sekiro, but in the midst of combat, it can feel shockingly close."
RPGamer (8/10)
"The First Berserker delivers an uncompromisingly tight combat experience that is further buoyed by an interesting, if somewhat unevenly paced, plot and a gorgeous presentation that is equal parts relentlessly grim and oppressive. The bosses are epic, enthralling, and even elegant at times, and even in easy mode, players are sure to get a tough but fair adventure. Its commitment to this identity is both impressive and formidable, and The First Berserker is sure to deliver thrills to players willing to meet its challenges."
TechRadar Gaming (7/10)
"The First Berserker: Khazan is one of the toughest action games and soulslikes in recent years. It's relentlessly punishing, with challenging spectacle fights and bosses to overcome. However, each challenge you do topple leads a sense of satisfaction that harkens back to the genre’s origins when everyone was less experienced at these games. That combat is only let down by a somewhat overwhelming story for newcomers to the Dungeon & Fighter (DNF) universe, a lack of accessibility options besides an easy difficulty, and a gear crafting system that feels unnecessary."
Hardcore Gamer (7/10)
"The First Berserker: Khazan is a solid Soulslike that just doesn’t do anything special. Even though the developers do a good job creating skill trees to match each weapon, there’s a serious lack of variety when it comes to the arsenal and attributes. On top of that, while the bosses are a treat to fight, being a significant challenge that evolves with the story, the same can’t be said about the mission structure. These are lacking functionally and artistically in their design, creating less-than-compelling locales to fight through. Despite all of our issues with The First Berserker: Khazan, it still scratched an itch that many Soulslikes haven’t been able to."
Push Square (6/10)
"Ultimately, The First Berserker: Khazan is a good time. Its aesthetic differentiates it from the plethora of ARPG Souls-likes we've become used to, and its brilliant boss fights are engaging enough to entice you through levels that start to feel boring around the mid-way point of the game. But its lacklustre story and bloated, inconsistent mechanics hinder what could have been a better game if it were more refined."
At the time of posting, The First Berserker: Khazan is at a Metacritic score of 80 and an Open Critic rating of 79 - both of which are pretty respectable aggregate scores. As we mentioned up at the top, this new action-RPG hits Xbox on March 27th, 2025.

It's getting better review scores than I thought. The first review I saw was Push Square's 6/10 but 80 on Metacritic is considerably higher than I thought it would get. Maybe on a sale, or Game pass i'll check it out.
Not something I'd pay for but if it ever comes to GP I'd certainly check it out.
I tried the demo & that was enough for me to know this is not a game I would enjoy. Not to say its bad just its not my cup of tea.
Good luck to folks who are into what this game offers & hope you all have fun.
I m loving it, good gameplay and it s not the kind of game wasting time in ultra long cut seens; it s the game I needed for this week, I took it with early access after a week spent on the demo, I feel addicted.
As a self professed Souls-like junkie I try and play every new one that comes down the pipe and this will be no different…now whether I get it at release or wait for a sale is the real question
It's funny how FromSoft's games bore me to tears but I'm always curious enough about other soulslikes. If it has something interesting for me, I give them a chance.
I'll probably wait for a sale on this one though.
If it's anything like a souls-like then it's probably a no for me - art style looks good though.
