Well, the cat's out of the bag - Grand Theft Auto 6 launches for Xbox Series X and S in 2025. We've been thinking about Rockstar's next open world epic basically since Red Dead Redemption 2 launched back in 2018 - and we're glad we can finally talk about GTA 6 in an official capacity. After poring over the first trailer today we don't have too much to say about the content of the game itself yet, but we do think it could turn out to be a real 'Xbox Series' star.
Coming off the back of 'Trailer 1' — which launched early due to a leak — a lot of the discussion so far has been around the platforms that GTA 6 will launch on. From what we've seen and heard, this is a current-gen console exclusive at launch - with no Xbox One or PC version of GTA 6 in sight.
And that has us dreaming of a real current-gen experience from top to bottom. We feared that Rockstar might try its best to cram the next Grand Theft Auto onto Xbox One and PS4, but all signs are pointing towards that not being the case. Look, we know that Xbox One getting big new releases in 2025 sounds silly, but stranger things have happened, right?
It's not that we don't want Xbox One players to enjoy the latest games, of course not, but there has to be a point where we cut that console off and start really focusing on Xbox Series X and S. Microsoft has just about moved on now with its 2023 lineup of releases, but third parties are still clinging on to last-gen in many cases. We're very glad that won't be the case with Rockstar and GTA 6.
In fact, we think this game could end up being the star of the current generation of gaming. Rockstar titles are huge, monumental events when they launch, and these days, Rockstar releases don't come around too often. 2025 will probably end up being around halfway through this gen, but we still think GTA 6 could be one of the most impressive games of the entire generation. Not much bettered Red Dead Redemption 2 on Xbox One, did it?
And so, our hype levels are suitably on the rise after hearing that Rockstar is solely focusing on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 for the release of GTA 6. We need to see more of the game itself to judge Rockstar's artistic merit with this one, but on a technical level, the next Grand Theft Auto could be one of the finest releases of the generation.
